Here are Michael Keaton's first four guest appearances on Late Night:
1. March 29, 1982: Michael has finished filming "Night Shift" and plugs his current television sitcom "Report to Murphy."
2. August 13, 1982: Michael promotes "Night Shift," released two weeks ago. (There's a poorly-edited moment near the beginning that combines two sources for this show.)
3. October 19, 1982: Michael's segments are interrupted by the Chinese Food Delivery Race.
4. July 28, 1983: Michael promotes the upcoming release of "Mr. Mom."

I just learned that Michael Keaton and David Letterman worked together on the short lived Mary Tyler Moore Hour in the late 70’s. Seeing 2 guys that were working their “way up” in The Biz talking is so cool

You can't deny how genius of a casting it was of Tim Burton....to make Michael Keaton Bruce Wayne/Batman. Looking at these early Letterman appearances Keaton would probably be the last person anyone would ever think of as the Dark Knight in a serious Batman movie. A campy Adam West type maybe...but not serious and dark. Burton saw something that others didn't see....stroke of genius.

So many fans were pissed off when that happened. A COMEDIAN? Playing BATMAN?! And he went on to be one the best movie Batmans ever. If you ask me why it's because he played both Batman and Bruce Wayne as different but believable characters.

The 80s era Letterman on NBC is etched in my brain. I used to set the VCR to tape Carson and Letterman since I was still in Jr High/High school back then and watch the next day. CBS Letterman just wasn't the same for me. The original Late Night was iconic. Went to see him twice in 88 the studio was tiny.

Probably strange to say (due to the fact that Michael has gotten so much a claim for his later films, including "Batman" etc.) but I feel he has never matched (or bettered) the role/work he did in this film "Night Shift!" This was a role that was MADE for his personality (or vice a versa?) And nobody ever Really rose to the occasion & wrote anything that fit him so perfectly - before or since.

Essentially the beginning of the Letterman Show, and the perfect guest for Dave's brand of Frat boy, college age to 30 something humor. I never found Michael Keaton particularly funny, especially when pitted against the likes of his contemporaries like an Eddie Murphy or the spastic Robin Williams. However, lurking behind that contrived comedy was a seasoned actor waiting to blossom into a pretty. decent actor. Still plays theist Batman with only Cristian Bale able to give him a run for his money. On a side note, loved the early 80's, recently turned 21, in college, with no real direction, but emulating Keaton (go figure !) with not necessarily academics army focus but more focused on going to nightclubs and sowing our notes. I think that I can speak for millions of Americans in my age group at the time. Miss those days !

Hey Don, you have any of the Letterman Home Movie Festival? Keaton made a great short where he's walking down the street, sees Ron Howard eating in a restaurant, gets his attention and Ronnie is clearly uncomfortable having run into him. All a gag of course, but haven't seen it since it was on originally.

This is what I miss about the current schlock that counts as late night talk show. The only 2 hosts that can hold a candle to Eighties -era Letterman are Conan O'Brien and Seth Myers. Kimmel and Colbert are major yawners. In comparison to guys like Keaton, most of the guests on the current shows are very boring and shallow.
