Michael Kelly 5 (modded)

Customer brought bass by shop; loved the look and feel of the bass but not the sound. I convinced customer to keep the pups and add a 3 or 4 band pre for more tonal options. We added an Audere 4 band and the rest is history!!! #ToneGawd

I actually never like them but these newer ones are def better than the previous models. The one I had several years looked like this one but didn’t feel or sound like this one at all.

That bass will not get lost in the mix. The 4 band Audere is a great preamp. It brought my Squier to life.

I have modded a lot of basses (cheap and expensive ones) and it all comes down to: 1st the species and quality of the woods, 2nd build quality and 3rd electronics.....Modded cheap basses will sound good when played by itself but in a band context all its tone flaws will show up and or get lost in the mix etc....

Some of those are true. No fix for quality of wood. Also what woods are you putting together. The player and the hands matter. Lots of tones in the hands. Same bass can sound extremely different from player to player. Modded bass can sound great in mixes. First thing is your setup. Ultra important most people think mods first. No setup. Frets. Neck pocket, bridge nut tuners strings all these play a roll. I’ve done many mods. Played many modded inexpensive bass on arenas tv show etc bases always cut through the mix. Always. Experimentation also. Remember tones is subjective also. Amplifications also matters. Speaker Amp even cords and power supply.

Audere has a lot of preamps which one in particular did you use im about to purchase that bass and i want the exact same preamp thanks

Wow how did you know to just change the preamp and not the pickups because i was considering doing the same thing but adding bartolinis but those pickups sound amazing you just saved me 250 dollars thanks for this post👍🏿

Because most of the time unless it’s a super cheap bass, the pickups are usually wound standard yielding the bass it’s optimum performance.

Hey Brother M. I p/u the Michael Kelly Custom Collection Element 5R about 5 Months ago. I put the Audere Classic Jazz 4 Band preamp in like that one. That Preamp and the Element 5 R make a Great Match. My question to you. What Strings are you Using on the Bass for this video?
