There was a study room reserved for Pacific Island students back in the mid-1990s, though I think it may have been organized by the Students Union rather than the University itself. It was in a university building, but promoted as an equivalent to the Women's Space, Maori Space, and Homosexual Space housed in the Student Union buildings. So the idea really isn't new. But it certainly is degrading to everyone involved.

I remember they had "womins space " in the 80s as a safe space for women from the "constant sexual harassment from males" - It was hardly used by regular women and the few nasty shrieking lesos that did use it already had no chance of male sexual harassment anyway . I went to the University of auckland, graduated back in 2009. Even back then they had internal seating areas designated for Maori and Pacific student's. I knew back then it was disturbing to cordon off areas for specific races/ethnicities. I passed by one of them on my way to a weekly lecture, and not ONCE did i ever see anyone sitting there. I had Maori and Pacifica friend's and they just hung out where everyone else did- in the quad, Albert park etc. We were all together. I suspect this is an example of university administration virtue signalling, and creating a problem of 'safety' where there is no safety problem. Its patronizing, infsntilizing, and plain evil to tell a group of young people just trying to make their way in the world that they must be segregated for their own safety.

This is not new. My Niece, whose ancestry is 50% Dutch, 25% Scottish and 25% Ngai Tahu had access to a library which was reserved for Maori and Pasifika students. My Son, whose ancestry is 50% Dutch and 50% Indian was able to enter this library with the assistance of my Niece who correctly introduced him as her cousin, pointing out privately to my Son that his melanin content acquired through his maternal Indian Ancestry enabled him to pass as Maori. Though my Niece does appear part Maori, two of her siblings have blonde hair and blue eyes as the genetic dice have resulted in their 75% European ancestry dominating their physical appearance. Would these two siblings with 25% Ngai Tahu ancestry have been welcome in the Library reserved for Maori and Pasifika students?
