Mike Murphey isn't ONLY a genius, he's a genius who does it all on his own terms. No chasing gold for the sake of gold nor fame for the sake of fame. Says what he means and lives his life. MY HERO!

This great song you wrote means very much to me. My great grandmother Maria Ignasias (known as Natchia) was a Tulamni Yokuts woman. Her tribe was all slaughtered by soldiers from Fort Tejon, CA when she was a little girl. She was taken to Ft. Tejon & keep as a prisoner until they closed the fort in 1864. Thanks for making the truth available to all as history has always been written by the victors.

Just sat in a restaurant in Oregon and overheard a conversation. It was his daughter and curiosity drove me to discover him. Very cool!

On this day in 1886 {September 4th} Geronimo, and the Apache Indians he led, surrendered in Skeleton Canyon in Arizona to General Nelson Miles. And 86 years later on August 5th, 1972 "Geronimo's Cadillac" by Michael Martin Murphey entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart ; eventually it peaked at #37 and spent 13 weeks on the Top 100. His next release, "Wildfire", would reached #3. R.I.P. Geronimo {1829 - 1909} and Mr. Murphey will celebrate his 69th birthday in seven months on March 14th.

From a letter I wrote to Michael Martin Murphy in 2018: "In the Autumn of 1972 I left the military. I was an angry young man with a deep sense of hopelessness and despair. I returned to my hometown, Detroit, Michigan. In November I went down to North Carolina to visit an Air Force buddy. In the Detroit airport I picked up a copy of Dee Brown's "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" I couldn't put the book down. While in North Carolina I stopped in a record store and picked up a copy of your album "Geronimo’s Cadillac" partly due to the cover and partly due to the title. I listened to that album intently especially the song Geronimo’s Cadillac. At the time I had no idea where I was going but something about Dee Brown’s book and your song struck a chord in me." . . . in 1984 I went back to work as a seasonal in Olympic National Park and began conjuring up an idea for a research project, the history of American Indians and National Parks. I thought, briefly, about going back to university to pursue another degree and conduct research on Parks & Indians. I decided not to go back to college. Instead I would pursue the research as an Independent Scholar. I discussed the idea with a Bob Keller, a friend, mentor and my former professor. Bob thought it was a great idea so I asked if he would like to work with me on the project. I apprenticed myself to this master historian and we began a wonderful ten-year journey together in the national parks, on Indian Reservations and archives culminating in the publication of our book, American Indians & National Parks, University of Arizona Press, 1998."

This is an original by MMM. Loved it when it was released in 1972. Geronimo knew he couldn't win and live free. The white man made sure of that. That year I read Dee Brown's Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee.

Does MMM have some Native American ancestry ? Either that or he has picked a very worthy cause to promote . How can we in this country ever accuse any other country of genocide after our treatment of the Native peoples who owned this land .

jerryg65, I have seen MMM in concert and he often speaks of his Irish ancestry. I have never heard of him claiming any Native American blood. My inclination is no, he's a Mick like me. :)

Never heard this version before. I only know the Manfred Mann's version. Both are great but completely different. Manfred's version is great with the vocals as they are.

Hoyt Axton did write this song; MMM has done definitive version, in my opinion. I didn't know that Manfred Mann covered the song . . . hard to believe they would do a decent job. I couldn't listen to Modern Talking's version - euro-electronic-pop crap.

The tale of native Americans and their dealings with the US calvary and immigrant settlers to this country is a sad shameful one. At least they got Custer.
