I have hope that Norman will be able to take his running to a new level now that he finally is a world champ. I think he’s going to mostly stay away from 100s, but I’d love to see him do a 200/400 double at an Olympics or world championships. I do believe he can get down to 43.3 territory someday. In 200, I could see him getting to 19.55-19.6 and seriously challenge for international golds. We’ve seen him take down Lyles before, he is capable of that kind of speed. Definitely such an exciting, versatile athlete

Great video but a correction is needed. At around 5:22 you stated that Norman is the only person other than Van Niekirk to run under 20 seconds in the 200 m and under 44 seconds in the 400 m in a single season. That is very much incorrect. I recall that in 1996 Olympics Michael Johnson ran 19:32 in the 200 m and 43.49. That was in a single olympic games. In July 2017 Isaac Makwala ran 43.92 in the 400, then 2 hours later on the same day he ran 19.77 in the 200m!

Great video. Always enjoy your stuff. Norman is in a tough place; sprints are absolutely stacked right now! He more than likely can't win a 200 race next year if Noah runs like he did this year, not to mention Fred and Erriyon. If Fred and Noah try to double again in the 1 and 2, does that open a window for Michael in either of those races? Last season was incredible all around and set up another great season to come!

When it comes to the 300m, I think plenty of runners are capable of breaking the WR next year (if they choose to try). Obviously Norman, but also Kerley, Lyles and potentially even Knighton all have what it takes to run under 31s if you ask me.

I don't think so, apart from Norman only Gardiner (19.75/43.48) & Kerley (19.76/43.64) have shown the 200m speed & 400m speed endurance to challenge that sub 31s clocking. Lyles, Knighton & Kenny B all have the 200m speed but are lacking the 400m speed endurance by some distance!

Given that everyone else at the top of that 300m WR list had run both sub 20/44s, it's impressive that Bolt who unfortunately never took the 400m seriously ran 30.97 in his only 300m race! Should be noted that MJ's 30.85s was run at altitude (1,339m/4,393ft) in Pretoria, South Africa. Would've been interesting to see what an interested 09/10 Bolt could have done in the 400m! Isn't part of the problem that Norman usually produces his best times at the start of the season as opposed to the WC/Olympics later in the season when it matters? He's run 5 sub 44s - all in June or earlier! For what it's worth, I think he's the most talented 100m (9.86 ) / 200m (19.70) / 400m (43.45) combination sprinter currently, but lacks the 'dog' in him that you see in the likes of Kerley to take him to that next level! Would love to see a rejuvenated WvN, Norman, Kerley, Steven Gardiner, Kenny B, Lyles, Knighton & Kirani in that 300m race!

True. Gardiner would have easily won worlds if he had been able to compete, that race was shockingly slow for what Norman did at USAs and Prefontaine, so I'm not actually 100% sure he's mastered championships yet, we'll have to see in 2023!

2017 Noah lyles ran 31.87 on an indoor track. He pretty much vowed to never run an open 400m, but maybe he could bring something to the table that could shock everyone. Doing it this way is heavily skewed by the 400m. I think a better picture of dominance would be a cross country style scoring system for fastest times in each distance. Whereby the runner with the lowest score is the most dominant overall*. Doing it this way you get 1. Kerley 6 / 24 / 8 = 38 pts 2. Norman 24 / 16 / 40 = 80 pts 3. Van N 81 / 40 / 1 = 122 pts (100 / 200 / 400). Van N is THE most dominant in the 400 but 81st in the 100. Kerley might not have a WR but his average dominance across the 3 distances put together is more pronounced than Norman & Van N.

@@oilguy777 I have a good deal of experience with scoring systems, soI welcome the ideas. I'm not at all suggesting that what I originally threw out is optimal (it was more of a fun idea), BUT: 1. I'm not convinced that it is skewed by the 400 whatsoever, actually. Show me how. Large variances are the opportunity, not the penalty; every participant has the opportunity to discount time on an equal basis. 2. I'm not clear on what your method actually is. Is this based on ranking? Because then it would have the fatal flaw of not rewarding disproportionately fast times (which aggregation/summing actually does do in a rough way), since you assign a place-based score in a linear fashion. 3. The ACTUAL correct way to score comparative multiple performances is to use a multi-events (e.g. like in decathlon) scoring method where performances are plotted against a distribution and where rarer (faster) performance scores are calculated using a coefficient that results in an exponential curve. The table of scores thus rewards smaller increments of points when the performance is near the mean but much bigger jumps towards the tail. The basis of determining "rarity" is a large data set of historical performances in a distribution. Scoring this way might result in Bolt winning the comparison since his 100 and 200 are so outlandish, but that's a guess.

I think it's fair to say that Information and Materials advancements has been a very Real factor. I do not think it's really fair to glorify today's athletes over past generations. Given the same materials and information I seriously doubt there would be any difference in performance. I think there needs to be consideration for this is record books.

But the further back in time, the less info is available. I'm just as fascinated by historical achievements as current ones. I always like to say one cannot compare athletics across eras.
