Exactly, it's doable but it's hard. Just saying "dead liberals" doesn't say anything funny or new, which a shock value joke kinda has to do. Although that being said, the "grow up [because] they can't" follow-up is not bad. If the "grow up" part had been the whole joke it would have been funnier, but you can't really do that because you need the previous joke to set up the "grow up" line.
