@@AndyNyle In fact, in this area of music MS and RB are my favourite ones, different but equally gifted and creative. I would never agree to put one above another: just Michael and Ritchie without any ranking between them. Or... I forgot somebody. Sometimes I think there has been another one on par of them, if not greater. An absolute, astral guitar god known to not so many. Listen to Electric Sun albums: he is German, called Ulrich Roth (performing as Uli John Roth) and he was MS's direct successor in the Scorpions.

Being in The Scorpions at the young age of 15 and having released "Lonesome Crow" (1972) just hearing Michael play you knew he was going to be something big. UFO recognized Michael's talent and he transformed the band into one of the 70's best melodic rock acts of the decade. His solos ("Rock Bottom", "Let It Roll", "Shoot Shoot", "Too Hot To Handle") were jaw dropping.

First saw him with UFO when they opened for Rush in 1977. So insane, when people watch him on video, they have zero concept of how loud he was, and yet how clean. Great songwriter. Listen to Force It or Lights Out and many songs he is playing lead from start to finish at different volumes. Many don't know that he wrote most of UFO's best songs. I've noticed over the years that my tone choices and the way I set up my pedals is unconsciously trying to mimic him. So I sound exactly like MS, if he had zero talent. Also Force It is the best rock album of all time, all other answers are wrong. Nice footage man and great sound on the video.

I think EVH did more to expand the instrument’s sonic vocabulary than everybody else of his generation by popularising so many then unique rule breaking techniques but Michael was a player of extraordinary emotional articulacy , original tone and melodic awareness who was also in a class of his own…His compositions like Into the Arena, Captain Nemo, There Has to be Another Way, etc were like emotionally structured storytelling narratives which were just beautiful and extraordinary. And at the time when the rest of the guitar playing world were all trying to copy Eddie and be clones of him Michael was one of the very few players who pre dated Edward and kept his own original identity as a a player…Michael was a great inspiration to me as a player myself going right back to the mid 1970s when he was the engine which made UFO fly.

I loved UFO. But when Michael came out with the first MSG or solo album it was obvious that he was extending the amount of guitar playing that was not in songs before. And I loved him getting back w/UFO for Walk On Water...that is WOW. and saw them live. such a noise from an audience with a median age of 37? And still today he is tossing out the melodies right and left. So, I believe that the solo or 1st MSG period was the turning point for the rest of his career. Check out 2023 at Rockpalast recording. Still great.

A good compilation. But the only thing I didn't like was after Michael talks about doing the double live album Live at Budokan you put up the END of MSG where Michael is playing a gem, "Lipstick Traces" from UFO's 1st album. Cool But I saw them in 84 w/Gary in Chicago on the Built to Destroy Tour. It fell apart and I guess he was contracted again for Japan. Because Christ Glen left, Gary was replaced by awful Ray Kennedy on vocals and that was it. Cozy sought the $$$ and he left after Budokan or after that tour and they once again got a Rainbow member Graham Bonnet because Gary left; and also Paul Raymond on keys and guitar too. Assault Attack was produced by Martin Birch and that was the best sounding album, Bonnet flashed onstage and gets kicked out and Gary is back for Reading-they were headliners! So, it's a jumble to skip to the last line-up there. Once again, Michael's burnt out and comes back with a partner...McCauley. And thus was able to retain the MSG name McCauley-Schenker Group. I've seen it before but the Japanese bit is funny because Michael is speaking with his English accent. He has been around the world so so many times. A legend of the 80's 70's too and still to this day. Amen.

I’ve never seen a guitar player up close like that… not one that played like Michael did.. his phrasing and placement was really inspiring for anybody trying to play the guitar he does it different than other people.. it’s not necessarily blue based or based he just does it the way he does it and it’s very interesting as a musician to watch someone like that play
