That's true. But in my opinion original Jimmy Webb's version the most sensitive. With all respect to Glenn Campbell. It's like with "Livin' On A Prayer". Bon Jovi did really good job but Desmond's original just on the other level to me.

Jimmy Webb wrote some amazing songs, e.g. Galveston (one of the great songs about war). With Wichita Lineman, writer Jimmy Webb, performer Glen Campbell and producer/arranger Al De Lory left Earth’s orbit. I was probably around 12 years old when I first heard it and it still packs the same punch as it did to my 12 year old mind in 1968. It is one of those rare moments (that were amazingly not so rare for Webb and Campbell) when the perfect performer gets matched with the perfect song and the perfect arrangement. I can think of no song that captures loneliness, longing and unrequited love any better. With all respect to other performers/ writers, the 60’s to early 70’s was a sweet spot in the history of popular music.

Saw them both on the same stage once (but not together) at a Jewel Heart fundraiser in maybe 1994. Allen Ginsburg was there, too, and maybe Grant Hart, though that might have been a different year. Smith and Ginsburg were almost always present until Allen moved on.

Got to have the BassVI or a Baritone set up to do this right. The Strat on the right looks like a custom 28/30" scale. It's actually a solid riff to do repetitive variations on; it can be a easily turned into many diiferent things, instead of just a cover so people don't forget about it. It looked like they didn't have much time to work anything out.
