Darwin Ortiz is a modern day Hofzinser. His creative contribution to our craft is simply outstanding.
His books and routines push card magic into uncharted territory.
He is my Mentor and my friend.
Enjoy this video

It is with a heavy heart that I just learned of Darwin’s passing. I’m in shock. Darwin probably influenced me more than any other card man besides yourself. He was kind enough to autograph Cardshark directly from himself to me when it was out of print. RIP Darwin! Learning Darwin’s routines challenged me in a way no one else has. Committing the routines I’ve already learned from him will help keep him alive in my memory. I’m proud to say I was able to become confident enough in performing the routine The Sting that I have been able to share it with a live audience. Everything you have shared about the routine is the absolute truth.

If one learns, deconstructs and studies a routine like this, he will recognize and appreciate the beauty and effectiveness of simplicity and boldness. Great!

Artistry at its best. This video means a lot to me. The way in which you emphasize the required consistency to keep hitting and passing plateaus could be a Ted Talk all on its own. Slow and steady wins the race.

He is undoubtedly one of the top magic authors ever. One of the only authors I can consistently follow. The clarify of his text is second to none. He explains complicated things extremely concise sly and simply. It’s also a very down to earth and relatable style, nowhere is it dry!

I;just got Darwin Ortiz at the card table a few weeks ago. It certainly is a great book. And your right, it can be intimidating, I first saw it advertised years ago but didn’t it because of the intimidation it presented. I’ll have a good look and see what effect appeals to me and try one.

I've heard Dai Vernon say that Richard Turner can do things with cards nobody else in the world can do. But I've also heard other knowledgeable magicians like MV speak almost reverentially about the card magic genius of Darwin Ortiz. I wonder if there are any contemporary magicians who would say that one of these men is superior in talent and skill to the other, or are they both such great magicians that it would be impossible to say if one had an edge on the other? In other words, had Dai Vernon already seen Ortiz when he declared Turner to be the greatest card mechanic/magician in the world? Ortiz is certainly more scholarly than Turner, IMHO. But Turner, being essentially sightless, may have developed his sense of touch to a degree not achievable to sighted magicians. Any thoughts on this anybody?

Yes on the book, reading, and studying 🙂 Darwin is one of my favorites, along with Giobbi, Dingle, and Marlo. *Constructive feedback: the clicking at the end of every sentence and pause seems unnecessary to the message. But the message is awesome as usual 🙂 Almost flawless routine and a great tribute! *The riffle hold on last 2 reveals only thing I'd note.

Darwin Ortiz is definitely one of my farorites. His books, his videos-- all i had studied lots of times. This vegas shuffle is also one of my most frequently performed trick, great effect. However the one trick i love most of Darwin Ortiz, is "Appointment in Samarra". The name is also the name of one famous piece of novel written by Maugham. The center idea of the novel had been magically transplanted into this trick, resulting in stunning effect and even raised onto philosophy level. This trick had almost influenced my entire thinking on magic. Now almost all the "big tricks" i do, always contains a novel-like center idea and a twisting, novel-like plot. However it's hard for me to upload a video, so hopefully you will do that trick someday in future!

Greetings Mr. Michael Vincent. Although I haven’t been practicing card magic for too long, I’ve been a big fan of yours since I first saw you on Fool Us. I fondly recall after your routine Penn stated that when people first start learning sleight of hand, the end goal is to produce the effects that you demonstrated that evening. I’ve been at it now for about six months or so, and while the progress is slow, there is progress nonetheless. More importantly, I’m truly enjoying the wonder and craftsmanship behind every technique, no matter how simple. I would like to ask, if I may, what is a good resource to find the literature that you have been mentioning? I’m making a list and am looking forward to slowly building up my own little magic library. But some of the lesser known works I cannot find online. Appreciate in advance your, or anyone else’s, valuable input. Cheers~

Just to elaborate on the previous message, Card College is a series by Robert Giobbi, an excellent and well-respected magician/thinker in the community. One book I would recommend is Expert Card Technique by Jean Hugard and Frederick Braue; it was my first foray into the world of card magic (and magic in general) and was an invaluable mix of techniques and routines. Hope this helps.
