@ Hendrix has inspired far more guitarists than Johnson, regardless of "who's better". Hendrix innovated and his rhythm playing is absolutely killer. Johnson is a great guitarist and should be revered, but play the general public a Hendrix song vs a Johnson song, and most people who prefer Hendrix. He just has this feel and groove that few can compete with. That being said, this is all opinion.

Yep - a lot of people focus on his lead playing, but his rhythm playing, sound and songwriting are incredible.....he had the total package with that, especially in the earlier years.

Bravo. I was about to type something like this. There are many guitarists faster than EVH all day long. But how many have songs played in NFL stadiums and are still anthems to this day. So glad I got to see them in '84.

Well said. Couldn't agree more!!!

Well he also arrived on the scene in 78. Many shredders didn’t even exist yet. Via, Petrucci, etc all claim EVH as one of the guys that made them do what they do today. It’s no different than buddy rich inspiring a guy like Neil Peart

I don't care for his playing, but I'll admit he did bring shredding to the masses. Everybody knows what a guitar shredder is regardless of what they listen to and they all know the name Eddie Van Halen. My thing is just that he always played the exact same way with the exact same upbeat, pop phrasing. He and Randy Rhoads were the first true shredders and both developed tapping at the same time completely on their own. Eddie did it with his middle finger and randy more rapidly with the edge of his pick. Randy was better and his playing over a few years showed more musical ability and equal if not better technical ability. He never got to live a full life having died at 22 years old. If he would have lived he would have developed and grown constantly as a guitarist. Never playing the same thing twice. Eddie Van Halen stopped developing the second they blew up and has just played the same shit for 40 years. Still does. He has been addicted to drugs at times where he couldn't pick up a guitar and play a single lick. He and randy are like a model and an athlete. They both look like the pinnacle of performance, but only one actually is

That is incredible! Electric guitar playing has come a long way to give the guitar and its music individual identities to stand head to head to other conventional solo instruments like violin; this could not be possible without talent, devotion and passion of masters like Michael A Batio, EVH, Al Di Meola, John Mac Laughlin, Eric Johnson and many others that evolved improvised based formless rock music into academic music entity. Funny thy, when I watched MAB instructional VHS tape, years ago, at first I thought video tape was copied in higher speed, took some time to realize that that was really happening in front of the camera! I completely blew away by his incredible precision in high such speed picking and synced hands techniques. I'm so glad to see him still up there where he was even in this era.and yes, he is one of the most underappreciated guitar players of all time but I am pretty sure he doesn't care, and that's good. Cheers!
