It is very tricky! I find my self looping endlessly and reaching a trance like state. Any tips on how to always keep your right hand doing the same thing and allowing your left hand to open up and explore? The other rhythm that I practice for independence is your version of the partido alto where your right had mimics the sudo. On both of these rhythms I can hold them very solid and can make slight changes to the pattern such as reversing the left hand on the partido alto rhythm, but I have trouble doing any kind of creative solo with the left hand while the right holds the beat.

Well, actually, merengue is something else. It comes from the Domican Republic and is played on tambora and guira. Plena should be played with panderetas. But there are some similarities.
