I usually make loads of wooden poles in the early game, then just keep using them till they run out, then move to medium poles and burn any more wood I find

I too am a late game wooden power pole believer. If there's nothing a medium power pole would cover that a small one doesn't, why not use a small one? It helps get rid of a resource you always have too much of!

I can see that, but I don't want to have a second item type in my inventory to think about and getting rid of wood is easy with a burner inserter chain. The resource cost is a rounding error.

By the late game the resource cost is nothing. The reason is to simplify logistics, and is the same reason why I have a stack inserter for my rocket fuel output; yes I can use a yellow inserter but it is easier to just carry around one type. If you need to git rid of wood, just leave up a few boiler / steam engines and let them run all the time. It might take a while but eventually it will all disappear.

That analogy is a Fact, I have seen multiplayer episodes of Factorio where it breaks down to the players fighting amongst themselves and the base gets wiped while their bickering over who did not do what AND who over constructed or under constructed assemblers or better yet, made JUST ENOUGH for what they needed KNOWING that that ingredient is needed for SO MANY OTHER THINGS forcing the other players to produce that same assembler system for another thing when the first player could of made a system to produce more then what they needed it for so the other players could use the left overs. Multiplayer Factorio WAS A GOOD IDEA AT FIRST... And then it start fracturing the Online friendships...

No, most machines in factorio have idle power draw indeed, but miners don't
