I, too, am 39, and I have had my OneWheel+ XR for three days now. Out on the rail trail today I had my first real, actual, fall at speed. I had the board on the most conservative shaping mode ("Sequoia," I think?) so I wasn't going faster than maybe 8-9 mph, but it was not fun. Yes I had a helmet AND wrist guards on, and judging by how much plastic got chewed off the wrist guards I'm glad I did! I fell victim to the infamous "speed wobble" and I failed to do a proper jump to bail off and down I went. Now, what I wanted to say here is, I believe this happened because my ankle and shin muscles are fatigued! I have not felt actual soreness; I am also a fairly athletic guy, I do a lot of general bodyweight exercise, and I haven't felt the "oh my god burning legs" or Jell-O legs from riding this thing, but I can feel that my response is looser and the muscles are just not as "tight" when I'm on the board. This is a long way of saying PAY ATTENTION to how you're feeling on the board and if you feel loose or sluggish in your ankles (especially) and TAKE A BREAK, like take a day off, and recover back to full strength. Don't do what I did and push it and end up flying off the thing.

There's always a reason when the ow+ board corrects you. That's called pushback when the nose comes up. It's pretty much a warning. I can only recommend you getting more miles and experience with the ow+ with on Mission and cruise if you just started. The more aggressive digital shaping modes like delirium with top speed have low threshold for pushback. Means you can go fast and the board will not correct or warn you with pushback or at least not often . Many people step on it and go full speed which can be really dangerous if the board engine turns off.. if you power through and step on pushback and suppress it the motor may turn off at high speeds, Downhills etc because it's overloaded and you may get really serious injury or even die. The ow support boards are full of stories of people who really really hurt themselves on delirium. Torn lungs etc. You have to understand the engine and the pushback and get a feeling for electric side of the board to avoid injuries. Protective gear won't save your bones if you nosedive at high speed. Im talking from experience with shoulder injury from that ow+. I'm experienced snowboarder but I didn't know all technical limits of the ow+ and that may really crush you if your nose dives into concrete at 12mph or more. Read all you can about this matter. Also never step on it with full weight on the nose when board is getting going . Start speeding up evenly until you reach your desired speed or the engine may turn off if you try to start like a rocket. Happened to me. Put all my weight on front to start really fast and it went few yards and turned off. Electric motors don't like that. Nice nose dive and busted shoulder smashed into concrete. I was too comfortable with it because of snowboard experience and i already was going fast on flat but didn't know stuff like that the engine can turn off if you overpower it. Don't start fast uphill and stuff like that. Can't speak much for offroad. Rode a lot of flat surfaces with much elevation. Stay safe...get a lot of feeling for pushback and a good stance before you go all fast on delirium... to quote the @onewiththewheel "The problem in my opinion (I've just eclipsed about 250 miles on mine) is that it feels so good, that it lures you into a false kind of confidence. This is especially prevalent when coming up against pushback - I've crashed mine at 18 and 16 mph and they were pretty rough. I would say if you are pushing into those speed ranges it is more dangerous than skateboarding." yeah thats it...always keep in mind that the engine can turn of and this thing will nosedive even if you dont crash because of your riding skills or something

Sorry but i have to correct you.. I had several nosedives in mission mode but not a single one in delirium. You can read the same in the official onewheel forums!
@googleuser-ly2ek
@googleuser-ly2ek 5 жыл бұрын
A Z I don’t think what you experienced was the motor turning off. I think what happened is the brains of the self balancing mechanism couldnt compute and quits causing the nose dive. I know that my board was still accelerating when it dived because I felt it and can see the sliding damage on bumper. The motor definitely did not stop. That would be grounds for lawsuits. Until we really know what Future Motion has sold us we should be filming if possible

I tried both but only for a short amount of time. The OW is very high off the ground but it has that huge wheel which can go over anything. Boosted is exactly the opposite. the OW looks like it's more fun though and also more dangerous. Also look into electric unicycles, they are interesting

As a 40 year old with reasonable skateboarding experience, I can tell you that the Onewheel+ is fairly dangerous and you are right to warn that you will eat it. Wristguards and helmet are a must - I posted a video after a 16mph no wristguard wipeout where cheese grater gravel ate my hands. The problem in my opinion (I've just eclipsed about 250 miles on mine) is that it feels so good, that it lures you into a false kind of confidence. This is especially prevalent when coming up against pushback - I've crashed mine at 18 and 16 mph and they were pretty rough. I would say if you are pushing into those speed ranges it is more dangerous than skateboarding. Even as a seasoned skater my feet get sore on long rides (at 165 lbs I can get almost 9 miles on mine :)), but I do have to mindfully become aware of my legs and feet and relax them mentally which makes a big difference.

just got mine a couple days ago. Was practicing on mission and got the hang of it for 2 hours in the park riding it around the block on smooth concrete surfaces with no bumps (got 5 miles of riding time with no falls). With a boost of confidence I thought I was ready for the bike lane on the main road while cars were driving by next to me. Was going on mission mode about 11 miles an hour and there was a huge ditch in the ground and I lost my balance ended up landing on my feet but I couldn't keep up and did a running fall and landed on my shoulder. Thankfully I had all protective gear on (helmet, wrist guards, knee guards and elbow guards) but still hurt my shoulder for the past 2-3 days and it's still sore inside. Kinda scared to ride it again but I'm gonna practice more on smooth surfaces now for about 10-20 miles before I take it out on the streets. Word of advice make sure you practice a lot before you take it off road or near cars or anything because its different when you ride by yourself when no one is around than riding with obstacles/pedistratons, cars, bumps and what not. Always wear protective gear then starting off because you can get serious injuries if you do something dumb.

What good advice. I actually bought the xr and returned it. The issue I had but it didn't look like it bothered you, was the size of our feet. Like you, I'm tall with big feet so for the front for pad to work, our toes have to overhang the board. I like to ride with the ball of my foot, but the motor would not disengage. I just kept going backwards.

I bought a $600 Chinese knock off a dandan board. At 35 I wasn't sure if I'd like it or use it. An didn't want to spend $1500 dollars as I have 2 young children. I must say it's awesome an 3 years of owning it. I'm not disappointed I bought the knock off. It also has 3 settings depending on skill. Built in Bluetooth speaker and a application to track speed distance and battery life. Which last me an hour and a half easy but I'm 6'1" at 165 lbs. Has brake and head lights. You'll love it when you get it! I'm not a skater or surfer. But I have decent balance took me maybe an hour to get. Made my wife stand in front of me with hands out to help with balance at first. Now I jump off foot high ledges. Good luck have fun you only live once!

I might have a few years left for something like this but hate to drop $1800 just to find out I'm no longer fit enough. Damn, life just ain't fair. I wish they had these things 10 or 20 years ago. I got my Pint in today and I agree with everything about the safety precautions. I hurt my knee a little on my first day, today, I was riding on grass and wasn’t even going fast and wiped out and the shock from hitting the grass alone made my knee crack and it’s been on ice since. This thing is crazy fun. Knee injury doesn’t seem serious at all I can still walk around and it really doesn’t even hurt just a little swollen and stiff. I would of got this injury if I had on knee pads or not so I just wanted to make it clear that there are plenty of other injuries to receive hahaha. But all in all, this invention is legit, like nothing else you’ve ever felt

Great video! Lots of great info. I don't own a OneWheel but I'm 35 and I just bought an Evolve Bamboo GTX electric longboard in January. I haven't been on a skateboard since I was a teenager. I've been practicing here and there after work during the daylight hours and getting more and more confident, and I'm having a blast. I have a lot of the same experiences you're having... feeling burning in my calves, achilles, and soles of the feet from the way you have to balance on the board. I haven't left the neighborhood yet because I live in a pretty urban area in South Florida, but I've gone on a couple 5+ mile rides and I'm really starting to love it. Nice, I've watched a butch of videos about the onewheel and none talked about the goofy/ regular option on the app, I also ride goofy, I already have a onewheel and I concur with everything you said, I took a Nosedive riding kinda hard on mission mode (had all the safety gear on, it's a must with this beast). Still need to try the delirium mode, hopefully it works better for me too. No matter what I love it, can't wait to ride on all the new places this board will be able take me...Thanks for all the info!

great video dude! I ordered one should be here tuesday- 48 years old, little skate boarding but mostly skiing in my past. Im a farmer now and do miles and miles walking back and forth during the day. usually for a screwdriver or something.....seeing this answered some questions for me coming from a similar point of view. Im no great board rider. I actually welcome the core and legs exersize that is fairly low impact on my bad skiing knees. I am in better shape now than I was in my 30's and I hope this will step that up a bit.

This should be requires viewing for all new riders. I’m glad to see you found the right shoes and wore safety gear and were riding around 11mph while you were still learning - those are some top common newbie errors! I think your explanation of the shapings falls a little short, but I can totally see why your experience with delirium is what it is due to your height and weight. All the bigger riders were saying the same thing when that shaping was introduced last summer. Overall great vid, peace out and float on!

Great video! Provided a lot of points that lead to my first OneWheel purchase. Similar situation...taller, heavier, older guy with no board sports experience, but just love the feeling of flying on it. Spot on with the calves hurting. Resting and stretching is key! Also, the OneWheel community is very supportive. Loving my purchase so far. Thanks for the help!

This is a really fun Rube Goldberg contraption full of band-aids and after-thought add-ons. I thought about buying one so I checked out a lot of youtubers for their reviews and opinions. They all love it BUT the most common sentence is "you will go down if.." and all of them got hurt, some badly enough to brake bones. When this thing nose dives and digs in, there's no way to recover. Some complain that it nose dives for no apparent reason. Someone added tiny leading edge wheels (another band-aid). Being perpendicular to the direction of travel means you're flung off sideways at high speed. It's not particularly stable laterally either. Just getting on and off it requires special skill. Can't go too fast or you'll nose dive, position your foot just so or again, kiss the ground. If you're tired, you'll eat it (Micheal speaking at 13:23 in this vid). The list goes on. It's clear this is a work in progress and good luck to the buyers. May your journey be safe. I'll stick to inline skates and my E-board until they figure how to work the bugs out. This thing in its current iteration is dangerous.

Thanks for the video, I took your advice and I've purchased the one wheel and it's the most unique ride ever! Take the time to Invest in good safety gear and ride with caution! Helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow and skater shoes! This board is no joke, you CAN NOT run off a sudden/abrupt stop you will go flying. 129 miles in, and my board did an abrupt stop/ felt like a power outage nose down and sent flying on to the concrete I laid there in agony. I was taken to the Emergency room for a dislocated and broken shoulder. It's not the flying that will hurt you it's the gravity and sudden stop :( ...enjoy and be safe! PS. Make sure you take your wallet,cell phone and health insurance card with you! It's not if you are going to need it, it's when. I would highly recommend having a plan on how you are going to to bail out in an emergency situation it will come up trust me.

Hey guy seen you on here for years and thanks for your helpful vids and input we need more guys like you.b Just wanted to add my two "sense" on the soft vs flat shoe thang. So interestingly my opinion changed with experience. In other words I was at a level for the longest time where if I didn't wear my vans I was all over the place and out of control with my New balance or Hoka's. Wasn't even a thought Flat Vans ornI didn't ride , period. To keep this short I'll just say now as I edge up to 16k between four boards. I Cannot do what I do or have the Superman control I need nor ride as long if I wore my Vans. Truly I would challenge you to try it again. This time know you have everything you need now I got head as a good rider and all your special little One wheel leg muscles have developed and now are ready to try out your flight shoes. I can NOW do things at 52 no one has done or at least have yet to see anyone else attempt. I'll just say the springyness and roll room I'll call it enables me to have much more range I EVERY WAY over flats. Flats are handy with flightfins. They just snug-uo better so course control is better. Ok,be safe all . And remember above all always always always KNOW TERRIAN AHEAD NOT YOU IF YOU MUST WALK IT FIRST. MANY EXAMPLES WHY BUT HERE'S ONE FOR FREE. YOUR RIDING AT NIGHT ALL IS FLAT LIKE BUTTER YOU WAITED AND LIVED FOR THIS. WITH A COOL NIGHT BREEZE THIS IS HEAVEN YOU FEEL SO ALIVE QND AWAR.......E......!!!@)#)$+$(@&#!!!!!! YOU JUST HIT A SPEED BUMP THAT EVEN LOOKING BACK YOU STILL CAN'T SEE BECAUSE ITS UNPAINTED!!!! WERENT THEY SUPPOSED TO BE PAINTED YELLOW???? NOPE AND DONT EXPECT ALL WILL BE GOOD BECAUSE THAT MAKES MORE SENSE . ACL hurts bad then there's surgery and waiting a whole week after surgery to get riding again. Crap!, Month later and did it AGAIN to other leg now. Last thing and very important. I know how to just let go and fall and had my ego been on break I wouldn't have cared about how so looked falling or trying to ,," run out the accident" to look cool or not as embarrassed because that kind of pressure I asked of my body was ridiculous and although I tried to save some embarrassment at 5he very 3nd I fell anyway. Everytime. This is a one wheel device! It's basically a "seesaw" on one wheel and some of us actually know that and God bless us we venture out again anyway. Well, sometimes love hurts. Hurts real bad. Just Glad I haven't quit and probably will still be riding if it means I'll have to strap a lawn chair to my board like those other guys who have done it 😊

Biggest tip(s) I can give for non-board riders, keep your toes flat! You will have a tendency to try and "grip" the board by curling your toes down, this won't hold you on the onewheel better, it will throw off your balance and make life harder. You need to trust your shoes and the grip tape, with small smooth movements your feet will stay on the board. Secondly, feel free to experiment with your stance and foot placement when getting on, having a comfortable stance (angel of your feet) and having a good position on the board will make a huge difference. I like to have my rear foot perpendicular to the board (90 degrees) and my front foot at about a 45 degree. Make sure your foot placement gets your center of mass over the tire, too far off the left or right of the board will cause you to fight for balance and ware you out quickly. It is an epic experience, ride safe.

nice video. another way to get off, rather than lift your heal, just turn your foot out, keeping the heal on the board, and turn your foot out, does the same thing to turn motor off, and you don't have to lift your leg as much

Great video, candid and to the points... I have been watching a lot of OneWheel related videos and I must say yours was the first one I saw that addresses some concerns I have (e.g. albeit I am a snowboarder, but have no skateboarding nor longboarding experience for me to base my sense on any board that runs on pavement, which is less forgiving when I crash on it than on snow) and some I did not even occur to me like tight and flat bottom shoes etc. I have not yet ordered one and after having watched your video, I think I will. BTW (I am guessing here), I believe the setting on the OS tells OneWheel to sense that you are lifting your heel side (on goofy mode) rather than your toes (on regular mode)... Again, Thanks for a great video, keep it up.

Great video, great tips and great Corvette, quite rightly always in the background. You've worked hard to buy it, so I enjoyed looking at it. So now you have to make a video of the Corvette too. Our Government doesn't like these sort of things (motion boards) here in the UK, but depending on the cost, I may say to hell with them. They already banned the Segway here. One thing, although I may have missed the answer, is how long does a charge last for?
