Wow what a labor of love this was, tons of work, much appreciated. The late 80's TF's definitely get confusing to me and become a mish-mash. It's definitely a lot of "a hat on a hat" as the great Jim Cornette would say. I discovered Powermaster Optimus existed when I opened him as a present in 88 and wow, my mind was blown. I also had Spark-Stalker, the Firecon, and I can't believe they sold toys that shot flames, even back then.

I find it really crazy how much better Japan did this time period. They had a cartoon/manga and often better toys. I also find the Japanese version of the concepts to be much more compelling. Always hated the idea of them giving up their heads to random aliens. I much prefer the headmasters just being the guy and the body being an unmanned transtector. Or the human controlled transtectors of Super God Masterforce. I especially love the lore of Ginrai’s body being originally intended for Convoys resurrection. Such a cool story.

Back in ‘88 my family lived in LA and I remember getting the sparker Flamefeatherin the summer and Piranhacon for Christmas. I had no idea who they were since I was only familiar with the animated series, but I loved them just the same. In ‘89 we moved to Germany and that’s where I discovered Pretenders, powermasters, microbots and then action masters. I was naive to think that Germany just had weird versions of American toys especially since He-Man toys had gone to outer space and he had a pony tail. Thank you for your hard work in putting this together. It really brought me back.

Cool video! Fun fact: Dogfight was supposed to be a Decepticon and Windsweeper was supposed to be an Autobot. The Autobots had chromed springloaded weapons while the Decepticons had "motorized" colorised plastic weapons. But then they mixed them up for some reason. You can also tell by their headsculpts, Dogfight definitely has a Decepticon facial expression. Also, Overlord was first envisioned as an Autobot (Cybertron). That's why he has a friendly, heroic looking face.

Not having the animated series coupled with the toy line literally shifting into something else I just kind of stopped caring. I did buy the occasional comic book and a few more toys from the series in 1988-1989 because they did put out a few that did look cool, but my imagination just took over with what I had from that period and they just became something else for me.

I was still faithful to Transformers but 1988 was my last time I got a TF which was the Pretender Waverider and that was just because I wanted the checklist insert of that years TF toys, I was 12 and the TF's were no longer resembled the classic '84-'85 toys and instead started looking more like Fisher Price toddler cars.

Michael, thanks for another great video. Maybe it's only important to us Gen-X 80's kids, but I think the 80's were such a special and unique era in terms of pop culture and toys. It makes me glad to see you doing such a great job preserving and cataloging it. This is the year that I was officially out. I was getting older and the toys weren't quite as cool as they were in the beginning. Today, my collection is mostly complete from 84 - 86, but I only own a few figures after that. That said, it's interesting to see these up close. A lot of these figures like the Pretenders aren't necessarily bad toys in my opinion, but they definitely don't feel like Transformers, which I think hurt them at the time. It's neat to see them, but I don't feel the need to have them in my display cabinet. Insofar as the comic, I think it's a testament to Simon Furman's talent as a writer that he kept me interested in those stories at the end of the series, even after I'd mostly lost interest in the toy line.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I wasn't as familiar with this year as the previous Sunbow years but it was fun learning about all of these characters. The Marvel comic was a great alternative after the show was cancelled. Loved how they created a spiritual backstory to Transformers, with Primus and the Last Autobot.

@@MichaelMercy Yeah, good comics. I was glad Furman came back and finished the series at IDW a few years ago with Regeneration One.

@MichaelMercy I very much enjoyed watching it. I love all the History of videos you have done. I've just being waiting super patient for the rest of Motu. All the main years of Joe and Transformers are done. You should finish Motu next. 🙏

I really like the concept of Masterforce. How cool would it be to become a Transformer? Too awesome to describe in words!

that’s probably what several kids in the 80’s had dreamt about

I was 10, and had a few of these. Getaway was one of my favorites. I still have him. Same as powermaster OP. For christmas that year my mom got me Ft max. I remember her saying she spent 100 bucks on him and thought that was just way tok much money for a transformer hahaha. If only she knew now how much the titans cost now. I miss her. I also had the tapes, I never saw alot of these in stores or at least I don't remember seeing them. The pretenders sucked!!! Thanks for taking me down memory lane!

You were so lucky to have a Fort Max. God bless your mom. 🙏

@MichaelMercy To this day, I can still hear her say, and I quote, "I wish I could meet the creator of the transformers so I can tell them how much I hate them," lol. I Definitely miss her.
