How I would modify the Pretenders is that the Autobots implant their shells with size changing devices and use them to better interact with humanity while the Decepticons choose monsters for intimidation and only have one or two (say, Stranglehold and Starscream) equipped to hide among humans Also, I’ve always interpreted Pretender tech as the precursor to the ability to mimic organic life that the Beast Wars characters have

@artemusprine10 ай бұрын
The UK two-parter that appeared late in the US series isn't really typical of the UK issues. They came out monthly also, in between the US comics which also ran there. This meant they were continuing the same ongoing story as the US comics, but in the form of "B" plots and "meanwhiles". They couldn't upend what was happening in the US comics but they could flesh it out and show it from other points of view. If the US comic that month took place on Cybertron the UK comic would likely take place on earth and vice versa.

A note on the Primordial Cybertronians eventually giving "birth" to Botancia - I think that's an in-joke to what the cartoons did for Cybertron, though it is very confusing and convoluted. The concept of Cybertron being the body of Primus was not in the cartoons, in the 80s cartoon the core of Cybertron was dirt and rock like a normal planet, and the Transformers were created by the Quintessons. Beast Machines revealed that Cybertron was once an organic world, and the Oracle aka Vector Sigma aka the supercomputer that may or may not be an aspect or alter-ego of Primus, wanted Optimus Primal to transform Cybertron into a technorganic world, which is a distinct thing from cyborgs and intended as the next evolution of the Transformer race. So the "primordial" Cybertronians are likely an allusion to that concept of Cybertron originating as an organic world and eventually that gave rise to technorganic Transformers. Of course we'll ignore that the comics totally did establish Primus as the heart of Cybertron and the Transformers were not created by the Quintessons, although in Beast Machines Vector Sigma claimed it predated Cybertron, and also it lets Transformers commune with the Allspark which is not the same as the Matrix, and let's not even get into how the Thirteen Primes factor into this... The Transformers rival Donna Troy for confusing origin stories

To answer your question of whether or not the Earth itself was a Transformer at any point in the franchise.... 3 times, to my knowledge. In Transformers: Prime, where it was formed around the slumbering form of Unicron and basically became his body. This was recreated (horribly) in the Bay films, specifically The Last Knight, and the less said about that the better. And in the comics made for the old Transformers Collectors Club/Subscription Service, it's revealed in the Shattered Glass universe (basically a Transformers spin on the Star Trek Mirror Universe concept), the Earth turns out to be another slumbering God-Planet Transformer named Gaia, who awakens to batter an evil version of Primus (yes, in this universe, Primus is bad, Unicron is good), beats his ass, and becomes a new Cybertron for the Transformers to call home after the war ends.

I consider the original 80 issues (along with all of the miniseries like the headmasters etc)MY transformers. I’ve been collecting the transformers classics reprints by idw,and it’s some of the best transformers content I’ve experienced in years. My favourite continuity by far. As far as continuations go… g2 is terrible, but I don’t like the direction regeneration 1 took with things either. So just the original 80 for me told an absolutely amazing story, and impact how I see most of the characters in general. I’ve got volumes 1-5 and volume 7 of transformers classics and I’m looking to get vol.6 and 8 soon. I’m also considering starting to collect the uk issues.

I mean, Ravage didn’t switch loyalties in Beast Wars; he was a Decepticon through and through even when they tried to make him a Predacon. So, Megatron’s ego is why we can’t have Optimus Prime and Captain America hanging out together? If he hadn’t broke cover in Issue 3 to show off how puny human weapons were against him . . . Actually, I kind of blame the decision to make this an ongoing series for why Transformers can’t be in the main Marvel universe. I mean, if it were me writing it, I would end the mini-series with Megatron being either destroyed or captured (possibly given over to SHIELD for containment) with the Decepticons disbanding and scattering to the winds, continuing to hide in their vehicle forms. The Autobots do similar and secretly integrate into human society, and the two sides pop up now and again in future comics. Nice and simple. But yeah, as soon as they decide to make it an ongoing series and Megatron decides to publicly announce himself to the world, having this story happen in the same continuity as a world of superheroes becomes impossible.

As to Ravage and other animation-silent characters talking in comics, there is precedent for it: Road Runner/Coyote, Tom and Jerry (and Itchy/Scratchy in Bongo Simpsons books) and many others who live by gesture and facial movement in the cartoons were made chatty by their comics' counterparts, in Coyote's case far exceeding his brief turns in the old shorts. Similarly, given the difficulty of conveying 'Duck Talk', Donald, and in the old days his nephews, were made utterly comprehensible when in books or strips. Grimlock here was an oddity, as noted, shifting from coherence to 'Me, Grimlock' AFTER being made leader, something I don't think the animated team would have even contemplated.

That was _Octopunch_ (His inner robot separated from his Pretender shell, which looks a little like Bludgeon tbf) who shot Grimlock in the back & accidentally awakened Primus.

The Ark probably took advantage of the fact the Creation Matrix was in Optimus' body to construct & give life to the dinobots though doing so may have used up most of its resources, with the damage to its sensors being possibly due to a combination of age & damage from the crash! Still at least comic Shockwave wasn't wasting his time waiting on a call from Megatron like his animated counterpart!

1:51:24 okay i feel i need to address this. When Simon furman got to write for the Us comic of transformers he attempted to connect the Us comics with the UK ones. Whoever with sales of the cómics of transformers in decline and that the UK portion was changed both format with now being short strips in black and white and with a miniseries named earthforce that incredibly damaged the continuity these plans fell off. This issue in particular has remains of that idea of fussing both us and uk continuities the biggest example is that in previous issues of the UK portion two decepticons (darkwing and dreadwing) were dispatched to recover the remains of starscream that survive the explosion of the underbase but they were re animated like if it was some sort of zombie but they managed to recover the remains, on a side note the reason of why Megatron wants revenge is because of a UK original plot of straxus making a clone of Megatron (basically they were clone shenanigans just like spiderman) with some complementary stories in the annuals and a final epilouge to the marvel continuity after issue 80 of the US comics. hope i was able to clarify this. I really enjoy your retrospectives of comics and when you talk about good comics.

We've had better than a Transformers/Godzilla crossover. We've had a Power Rangers/Godzilla crossover.

IDW was originally going to make a crossover featuring many Transformers series including the marvel comics. But sadly Hasbro scrapped the idea. The only big transformer crossover we got was The Universe War made years before this scrapped idea. Also this is for the Math wizards: How Many Optimus Prime's Brains can you store in a one Terrabyte flash drive?

Really, that was was going to happen?

Apparently. Still don't know why Hasbro scrapped it since that's a potential money maker given toys.

I see Marvel Shockwave knows the art of breaking the forth wall. Also find it HILARIOUS that his message was referenced in Heroes in Crisis (Update. And now I can imagine older readers who saw the movie comparing the demises and finding it bad because in the movie Optimus at least went down fighting)
