Christmas of ‘87 was my Captain Power Christmas. I remember putting the Energizer on layaway at Dutch Boy with my allowance money a month or so before Christmas. My parents ended up getting me the Interlocker and the Phantom Striker for Christmas that year. We never had a VCR when this came out, so when it aired on Saturday nights, I had to be parked in front of the TV ready to go. I’m still not sure if it worked properly, and I never really had a chance to enjoy the plot of the show when I spent the whole time waiting for the flashing lights to appear.

Amazing ! As a child, I really loved this show but I never got any of these toys ! I didn't even know about them, so this episode was very instructive. Thanks !

The 2 sepearte sounds have 2 distinct functions. The first wave is for the other toy ships to gain points by creating a field you could shoot at. The 2nd wave was a barrier that would take hit points away from the toy ships attacking.

Oh man, that jet was the last toy my Grandma ever gave me and I couldn't remember the name of it for the life of me! It came with a VHS tape of the show. It was basically a laser tag gun, and whenever the show shot you down, the canopy sprang open and the pilot ejected across the living room.

I had a memory for many years of a blue and gold action figure that was not a GI Joe that I borrowed from a friend in the late 80's. I could not place the name of the figure though it was in the back of my mind somewhere, nor could I find something that matched my memory by searching online. I've finally found the answer thanks to this video. It must have been Captain Power! I am so excited to have finally found the answer. I absolutely loved the toy due to the stunning gold colors. I could never figure out why it had a large hole in the back, because I didn't know it came with all those accessories, but now it makes sense. This is a very exciting find, thank you.

Such a static toy, but the lights and sound are sensory overload and it just looks so cool that it feels like something really dynamic. The whole property (from the high-concept tv show with great writing to the innovative electronic toys with cool sculpts and paint jobs) were absolutely rad.

The Power On energizer was also interactive with the TV shows. Play one of the interactive videos like Future Force Training or Raid on Volcania with the toy switched on and facing the screen. After Captain Power gets in his energizer and suits up, your energizer will activate automatically for your action figure. If I recall correctly, there is another sound it plays; the button push gives one sound, and the TV show activates another.

Another classic, that is severely underrated, in my humble opinion. Of all the series that Hollywood is obsessed with remaking/rebooting, this is one that I wish would get a proper redux with a more adult vibe (even though it was already a pretty adult show by kids standards). Keep up the great work sir!
@zaphodthenth5 жыл бұрын
The two different sounds were for the following: When this was pointed at the tv when the show was on, the scene where Power says "Power On!" and the device he's in lights up and triggers this toy. When it turned on it would interact with the other toys like the Powerjet and Phantom Striker. First it would give "Power Points" and you used the jet to gain points in your toy jet... THEN it would change to "Minus Power Points" and subtract points from your toy. If your jet lost all its points the pilot would eject and the toy would shut off. However turning the switch off-on would turn it on again.

I met the actor who played Scout on a movie set once. I was assistant props master so I got to hang out with him between scenes. Having lunch and hanging out with one of Captain Power’s crew…I almost died! 😂 Super awesome guy! Across the lunch table was a lady who was in Spider-Man.

I had these toys as a kid. Captain Power had a mountain base. I dont remember the name of it. But it had a turret on top similar to MASK Boulder Hill. There was also a rolling platform, sort of like a shuttle crawler in the back, that the Energizer could integrate with.

Thanks for covering the amazing Captain Power. 7 yr old me had almost the entire line, even the VHS episodes, but nobody around here knows what I'm talking about. Wonderful review! Alllmost as good as having it my hands again 🙂. I absolutely loved Captain Power when I was a kid. Not only were the toys gorgeous, but the show is outstanding. It felt mature, and it holds up. Sophisticated storyline, terrific production value- it felt cinematic. I shared this on your Patreon, but I worked at (what was left of) Landmark out of school. Tony Christopher was an interesting chap. Thrilled when I told him how much I liked Captain Power. Said "we were on to something with that one".

Thanks! So cool you got to talk to Tony about Captain Power. I was telling Luana about it yesterday, how after He-Man and She-Ra were coming to a close Mattel bet the farm on Captain Power. I still think it was a safe bet, what an imaginative and innovative idea. Maybe if Dirk Benedict had played Captain Power instead of Tim Dunigan... lol.

Me and my dad loved the show. We even got it on bootleg at a local convention. It portrayed a good, mature, military sci-fi (much in the likeness of Starship Troopers (The Book!) by Robert A. Heinlein or Hammer's Slammer's by David Drake) but with more of a nightmare-trans-humanistic cyberpunk atmosphere. It was mature, and it was a great way for kids to be introduced to mature concepts of war, loss, and death, especially with the near Gulf War looming and the Vietnam War in the rear view mirror (caution objects are closer than they appear), especially with parents who were aware enough like my dad to demonstrate good and evil... Which is why I was able to watch RoboCop at 3 years old in theatre.. but Captain Power had this idea that was Power Rangers meets the X-Men meets Terminator meets 1984 that could have never have been more magickally and scientifically put together! But with my younger self fascinated with robots, having seen Runaway, Terminator (Future Wars), RoboCop, and Short Circuit, the toys even furthered my fascination with what was possible with science, and even more important to me, art and story.

I never owned a single item from the toy line but I do remember the show fondly, as brief as it was. The show aired just a couple of years after where I am from. I loved its visual effects (that obviously look dated in this day and age), the characters (both heroes and villains) ...The post-apocalyptic setting at times reminded me a bit more of The Terminator than Star Wars (I have already watched a fair amount of R-ratred films when I was just a kid) and for that time this was kinda ground-breaking (I guess) and quite exciting for a show that was (presumably) primarily aimed at kids. I mean, there were some cartoons in the 1980's that had fairly sophisticated storylines (Inhumanoids, Galaxy Rangers, just to name a few); but back in those days this was still more of an exception than the rule in regard to kids' shows.

The first half of the light effect was a shield for your jets if you were behind the power on energizer, The effect is strong and attacking jets firing couldnt break thru the strobe. The 2nd half was a not as strong shield that the attacking force in front of the energizer could shoot thru, but could still take damage if they got too close.

Great job explaining the Captain Power figures & game system! The Christmas of '87 I was given the OFF-WHITE SPACESHIP/LASER DEVICE comes with VHS TAPE/GAME together NEW in box, plus this same figure here reviewed, CAPTAIN POWER "MAIN HERO" NEW on card!. It wasnt as early as Transformers, GoBots, He-Man, & Gijoe. I was almost 11 years old then. I THINK. The TV GAME/VHS TAPE was very new and intuitive for its time. And even today i would have fun playing it! lol. Like you mentioned, the TV would shoot at you, with laser infrared beams! Similar to LAZER TAG, & likewise I/you would fire infrared laser beams at the ships, as well as fire at "evil" monster like characters on the TV. That was really cool youu litterally be part of the movie you were watching. AWWESOME STUFF! It was ahead of its time & it worked great! I had the BLACK VILLAIN HYPER ship 1 year later at Christmas of 1988. When i got it my brothers already broke the original. I mean it was to be expected. But that was my step moms fault for "MAKING ME SHARE MY TOYS" & she even pressed my father to make me share my 1984 original Optimus Prime with my brother before i even got to play with it & he broke it on purpose "because he could" ...he said when I asked him. (She still is doing shit like that to me & NOW my son too! Ugh" Thanks for the walk down memory lane Micheal :)
