React OS whilst an interesting project has had little to no mass development in the years it's been around. There are plenty of better Linux and other operating systems that have just 1 developer and are in a stable state. I would like to see React OS go stable but they prefer to keep playing catch-up to the more and more things that run on Windows to run on React OS. If they simply made and took what they have now, made it stable without worrying about playing catch-up to Windows and then released a series of smaller updates that focus on compatibility then people can use it as a daily driver. Just a thought🤔🤔🤔
@psychicist4 жыл бұрын
This happens when the developers of a new operating system love the system they are trying to clone too much. I don't expect ReactOS to ever become a usable alternative to Windows or other operating systems, especially as gaming is moving to the cloud and native Windows compatibility with games and applications is becoming irrelevant. It is still nice as a free version of Windows, but that may not really matter much anymore these days.
@PhirePhlame4 жыл бұрын
The comparison to Linux is a bit off because React is a whole OS being built from the ground, whereas Linux developers already have a fully-functioning kernel from the moment development begins.
@psychicist3 жыл бұрын
@Clarissa 1986 We will see. I think gaming hardware is getting increasingly expensive while in many instances still tied to a combination of an operating system that is in decline, so it may be easier to just stream everything from the cloud. Of course this will not be a solution for competitive gaming. And as all popular games are closed source, eventually publishers may not offer locally playable games anymore.
@Epsilonsama3 жыл бұрын
I dont think ReactOS has a real active development to it. If their goal was to replicate and Reverse engineer a Windows Environment they are far from it. The project started like 20+ years ago and it's still far from stable. They should have chosen a specific version of Windows to replicate and try to be as accurate as it can be.

I nominate the $5 Windows 98 PC for the most native OS installed. ReactOS is still trying to meet Server 2003 compatibility so it is a long way off from even Vista. Not to mention how buggy it is as it was in the video and it doesn't even support NTFS. If you want to dualboot, you should choose VBR install and then you can have the Windows Bootloader boot into the VBR of ReactOS to allow dualboot though it requires you to edit the bcd using bcdedit. Though, considering how buggy it is, ReactOS should be relegated to virtual machines. I mean, it is literally alpha software still (though a lot more useful than the GNU Hurd kernel)

SpringBok01 the whole point is to provide an open source OS compatible with Windows but what is even more bizarre is why GNU Hurd is still in development after 30 years.
@laharl2k4 жыл бұрын
@@springbok4015 While yeah its obsolete its still better than nothing. If it ever reaches a state were its stable and people actually start supporting it, it could be very much the end of microsoft. Just imagine, lots of people are still using XP and 7 nowadays, me included, if people went "back" and started supporting reactOS as they did back then with XP, which isnt that hard, then lots of people would have no excuse not to use it instead of windows. DirectX works on top of windows so you could always install it on reacOS provided it implemented all the syscalls necesary for it. Its just a matter of reactOS implementing everything it needs and people using it, then companies will jump in, just like they did with linux.
@ErdrickHero4 жыл бұрын
@@laharl2k ReactOS would definitely need to be 64-bit to be a viable alternative to modern operating systems (though having 32-bit and 16-bit compatibility layers is not a bad idea), but otherwise, yeah. As far as general usability, not much has changed in the way Windows has worked since XP that people don't generally dislike.

Was this an April Fools?! ... seriously, nice to see the ReactOS guys commenting on your channel. I'd like to see ReactOS make a better version of the windows linux subsystem.. If reactOS nails fast virtualisation and can run Linux (software) really fast (barring (full) graphics acceleration) and reliably, and also Android apps the lack of full MS Windows (TM) support would be far less of a problem... If Linux drivers could be used in place of currently non-functioning Windows drivers it could be reliably usable far quicker... An interesting effort, even if I do no agree with software developers (or anyone) doing such difficult jobs for free, or a tiny payment at best.... TBH I like KalibriOS the most out of the current alternative OS's.. It works on all hardware I've tried it on from a USB stick. It's a bit too limited at the moment but with a modern N-Vidia and ATI driver and OpenGL/Vulkan support it would be pretty perfect.

You should install gentoo!

I haven't tried ReactOS since 0.4.11, might be worth taking another look

Try the most recent Lubuntu. I want to buy a dvd for my windows xp pc that i got from my uncle, but i can't boot from usb sadly. And i don't know if it can run from the hardware. It has a pentium 4 and 1,5gb ram. Ati radeon 9000. Update: i'm able to run Lubuntu 18.04 with a great experience. People think ubuntu is the same as Lubuntu, but lubuntu has lxde and ubuntu gnome3 desktop

No, the latest Ubuntu (and hence any derivatives thereof) only come in 64-bit versions, and thus is incompatible with the $5 98 PC.

I have a very similar system (P4 3Ghz, Radeon HD2400, 3GB ram) and I dual boot Debian 10 and Win XP Pro easily. Both Debian with Plasma desktop and Win XP work great. If you can't boot from USB, just go ahead and burn the iso file onto a DVD, and then boot off of that.

Use PLOP as bootmgr, it will allow you to boot from USB to some trickery.

@@thatoneuser5066 lubuntu has 32bit but ubuntu has 32bit. If you search minimal cd you find x86 cd and ubuntu 18.04 32 bit does work

When Ctrl Alt Del stops working, you know you are in trouble. Windows, Android, Linux all follow this rule.
@theblackcatvieweraccount54024 жыл бұрын
Nah, on Linux, alt, F4 and F6 will switch you to and from the base terminal. From there you can reboot, shutdown, kill programs, end the session, mount drives, edit files, install or uninstall programs, etc. Edited to correct tired me's spelling and incoherence.

@@theblackcatvieweraccount5402 well, i learned something new today. Also, the "magic SysRq key" is very much like Ctrl Alt Del in Linux.

@@vedantganesh4954 that's usually in reference to alt, F10 which has never worked for me. Not even once. Glad I could provide some new information.

I installed it on my old laptop.. Worked great... Had some issues with the discrete vs integrated gpu but other than that it worked out fine. So that issue is the same as with xp and such

I actually got it to work on real hardware a DFI 915 board with a Dothan family CPU though it wasn't easy and I used a very old PCI Radeon to get video working right.

Wish more companies would support this more. Even hardware vendors like AMD/Nvidia/intel. Ms has become corrupted imo. They need big company like Vavle/Steam too help support it

They are supporting Linux big times, last 5 year in Linux is like going from stone age to colony on Mars. Desktop users might need to wait few more years, but it got the momentum going.

Have you tried writing the video drivers for the on board graphics to a CD and install the drivers manually to React OS?
