I have seen all of the reviews and test hit everything. Currently playing the steelhead xr pro irons which I love. These new Epic forged just blow everything away... no contest. Regardless of the lofts and numbers stamped on the bottom....these irons hit the ball into orbit and out of sight distance wise. The most important thing is the shot dispersion is the tightest I have ever seen. They are so straight and accurate yet can be knocked down or curved at will. Total trajectory control. Yes, they are extremely expensive but they will probably be the last set anyone will buy. The quality, look, sound and performance are unmatched. I am a 67 year old single digit player and these clubs are the holy grail. We all spend $40 k on cars that are worthless in 5 years so $2 k for something which can be used for years is a big yet worthwhile investment. Btw.... they are absolutely beautiful, too.

I played these from 2019 until 2022. Excellent irons in my book. Loft is loft to me and the number doesn't matter to me. I love the sound and have had my best rounds with these clubs. I have played the Srixon zx5's since 2022 and like them also. My Srixons are showing wear, and I am looking at the Epics again. Anyway, this is years down the road since your review and I appreciate what you do.

It's more than bragging rights. The new game improvement clubs are not just about aggressive lofts. This video is a prime example. The Epic Forged 7 iron is lofted like your 5 iron. It hits the ball the same distance as your 5 iron with similar backspin and peak heights. The difference is the forgiveness. No way your 5 iron would hit as well with off center hits like the Epic Forged did. Even better are the lower lofted clubs. The Game Improvement 4 iron is lofted like a traditional 3 or 2 iron but is much easier to hit well. The gaping now will occur not between your longest iron and your 3 wood but on the wedge end. You will likely need to carry 4 wedges and drop the 5 wood or 3 hybrid.

If it helps with strikes across the face then why not buy it? Super consistent front to back dispersion, just like a blade. Great vid Michael.

So my Cobra F7 6 iron is 26*. That makes the Epic forged 7 iron's loft essentially equivalent to my 6 iron. I can tell you from first hand experience that the Epic forged 7 iron is definitely longer than the Cobra 6 iron. It flies higher as well and the feel and sound at impact is really, really good. There is much more going on here than jacked lofts. I would suggest everyone who can go and hit them. Especially if the cost doesn't predetermine how you might perceive them. My ego has never been tied to the number on the bottom of a club. The number for me is simply a reference to how far I can hit that club. No tougher than that. YMMV.

The guy who buys this iron is probably only hit the proper iron as you call it 125 yards. He doesn’t have the ability to hit driver 300 yards like you do. He most likely Max’s driver 210. Which on most courses he will still need to hit approach shot of say 160 to 180 which puts him in hybrid to wood range. It’s about playing what’s fun when your 70 years old, it’s not fun hitting 3 woods into par fours that others in your group are hitting sand wedges into. The right way to review this club is with someone of say 70 mph swing and then compare it to your proper club. Golf is a game for the ages not just for the almost tour players. Give them something that makes them want to play again, let them hit the 150 7 iron again and who cares what loft it is.

I love that you took your Wilson V6 5-iron and showed explicitly how the Epic is also a 5-iron marked 7. We really are to the point where we need to identify clubs by loft, not number. That said, having a forgiving head is certainly a plus for most players with inconsistent strikes. However, that could be done with more traditional lofts that do not leave large gaps in your shorter irons.

Every other club tester said that the Callaway Epic forged 7 iron stops & the angle of decent matched a 7 iron...The lofts are about 4 degrees stronger than a standard 7 iron. In your test the Epic forged 7 iron was more accurate than your staff 5 iron so whats the beef? Quit looking at the bottom of the club and just hit it... If the Callaway Epic Forged allows golfers to hit clubs longer and they stop as the angle of decent demonstrates then that would allow golfers to carry a set of clubs 6-PW with 5 wedges....a driver, 3 wood and putter.... If it's more accurate then why not use it? It looks to be the most consistent club I've ever seen tested.
@petermartinaitis81665 жыл бұрын
The problem is if the 7 iron goes 200 yards then with 10 yard gapping the wedge would go 170 yards !!
@klaymoon15 жыл бұрын
The consistency is amazing. That alone may well be worth the money. However, other reviewers were getting good heights which help with stop. But, your regular 5 iron is a bit higher! Can it be the lighter shaft taking away the dynamic loft? Thanks for the great review as always!

Thanks for the review Michael, really honest and great quality as always. I like these clubs and the hybrids that are coming with them. Put the cost to one side and they are a fantastic club for me. I shoot mid 80's - mid 90's. I need all the help I can get as I hit it all over the face. I've a slow swing speed and I don't hit it very far, my 6 hybrid goes about 145-150yds so need help there as well. I couldn't care less what club I hit (or what's printed on the bottom) or what my friend hits. I only care how far out I am and hitting it that number. Your grouping was fab, and you honestly said you were not middling it. Each shots decent angle was around 45° which my understanding is a great window because the ball will stop on greens. I'll go and get fitted (hybrids 1st, can't wait for that review!) and then let the fitter match irons to them. I know you do head to head reviews, would love to see these pitched against Callaway Big Berths's in the future.

All of you making fun of these clubs are the same people coming over the top, barely carrying your 7 irons 130 yards lol. Mike, you kept hitting it all over the face 195 yards while stating these clubs are not for you? Do you play for money? Who cares what number is on the club or what it looks like. Please put it up against your bladed 5 iron and let’s see which club gives you the most birdie looks? Let’s be honest, unless you wake up every morning and your job is to go compete against the best players in the world, you do not need to shape shots. You need the ball to go straight, high and far no matter where you hit it on the face, because unless you’re on tour, you do hit it all over the face.

Oh the irony my old Mizuno MP14 PW was 50*. Now a modern day PW is 45 degrees or around where a 9 iron used to be. At the end of the day it's which iron one hits consistently for a given distance. It doesn't matter if it say 6,7,8 on the bottom. I don't need to hit a 150 yard 9 iron.
@NapoleonDynamites5 жыл бұрын
I'm guessing the folk that would need/buy this iron wont be hitting the 7 iron anywhere near 200 yards, most probably hoping to get to 150/160. A friend of mine had a full set of hybrid clubs right down to a picthing wedge hybrid, but he used to be embarrassed having to use them, so he now has some Taylormade distance irons and he still only gets about average with them. But the worst thing about these distance irons is he can't even hit the 5 iron as far as his 7 iron unless it's off the tee! Its probably because the shaft is longer with less loft.
@robo2655 жыл бұрын
Honest review thank you , If the shafts are 2 clubs longer it just makes it harder to hit em, have you tried the seven iron with a shorter shaft.

@rellikod695 жыл бұрын
I do not get the lengths - you said your Wilson's are 1/2" over standard which would put your 5 iron at 38.75" but the EPIC 7 iron standard length shows 37.625".
@justinstephenson93605 жыл бұрын
So if we ignore the number at the bottom and look at lofts and shaft length, it is not a 7i but a 5i. It spins like a 5i, it carries like a 5i but flies like a 7i. So it is a 5i Fli-Hi (except that another brand already has that name!). The thick top line is not for me, but I can see a lot of golfers, particularly senior golfers having a lot of fun with these clubs. I would have thought most people considering these would probably buy 7i-AW (so 5 irons c.£1400), and the 5i looks interesting as a driving iron - maybe even the 4i for a good player. I have the steelfiber shafts in my i210s, very nice shaft, feels very stable. So for Callaway to offer this as standard is impressive
@swisstrader5 жыл бұрын
Why is no one reviewing the Epic Star version of this iron? I know its supposedly more fitted to the Japanese marketplace and slower swings, but just for shits and giggles, decided to hit a 7 iron Epic star yesterday with a 50g shaft (yes, 50g’s!!!). I was astounded, gobsmacked, shocked and in awe as to how good they felt and my overall numbers. I know the lofts are a bit jacked, but still a good 10-15 yards longer than anything I’ve ever hit, super soft and almost effortless to hit and deadly accurate.
@user-wf7vs3hd9n5 жыл бұрын
Mike, do you think a mid handicapper would find it easier to hit the Epic Forged or the Wilson's? My guess would be the Epic's so that might be a reason for going that way.
@MichaelNewtonGolf5 жыл бұрын
If your referring to the Wilson staff blades then I’d go Epic’s but hefty price difference!
@JDSFLA5 жыл бұрын
Or you could buy Wilson's D7 irons which are forgiving and distance oriented, but 1/4th the price. Same is true of a number of other game improvement distance brands, but the D7's are a real bargain.

If you want forgiveness and some hotter ball speeds there’s just so many better options that cost less than half of these. 919 Hot Metal/Pro would be my suggestion but M6, G410, Srixon 765 are all really solid options as well
@richardtyerman9195 жыл бұрын
Yes we know the lofts are strong, people they are aimed at won’t carry below six iron, and find these easier to hit than any blade. Only people slating them are basically single figure golfers who don’t need the help, and on that you could say they need high lofted clubs to help them. I bought them and my 9 iron carry is now 150, 130/140 pair then three wedges, not an issue
@thegentlemansjoker2 жыл бұрын
It really isn't that hard to setup your bag when using these epic forged irons. People are fixated on the lofts/number at the bottom, but I play them and am obsessed with them still. I just have driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, 5i ( 21 degrees) through lob wedge ( 60 degrees, putter, for my 14 clubs. The only difference to a "normal bag" is that I carry a pw, aw, gw, aw and lw, instead of carrying a 3 or 4 iron. Basically you substitute the 2 long irons for wedges, but the gapping all works in the end. Who cares what's stamped on the bottom if you love the clubs. To me, they're the best looking irons that I've ever seen and feel amazing, as well as being super forgiving. I'm a 9 handicap, and play for the love of the game, so for me I'm extremely content and don't care what others think. If YOU love what you play, then that's what matters.

A good review Mike. It would be interesting to see what the 5 iron and PW do. Does the 5 iron play much longer than the 7 iron? Is the 5 iron too difficult for the average golfer to hit (is it like a 3 iron?). How far does the PW go? Is it too long? I hope you can try out these other irons.

It specs exactly as your Wilson 5 iron, as you say. You probably can hit your Wilson 5 iron as consistently, as shown at least from one shot. More to the point, can the higher h'capper hit a 5 iron as consistently? I can't. I did hit the Epic Forged 7 iron with the Aerotech shaft in-studio and it was longer and higher and more consistent than my six iron, so I am tempted. The only thing that gives me pause, thanks to your review, is relatively low spin numbers (compared to Cobra F9 7 iron). I am looking for more length in approach shots that will actually hold the green or land under the pin.

Got fitted for these last week, waiting on them now. Swapping out of a four or five year old set of Ping G Max irons with extra wide soles. Got the pings when I couldn't break 100. Shoot in the 80s now and the pings feel clunky to me. These have me a lot of forgiveness and feel while having a better profile. Given the strong lofts I ironed down, so instead of 5-gap with a 3 & 4 hybrid, I'll be in a 6-gap and a 4 & 5 hybrid with the epics. Adding another wedge to the bag as well. Length wasn't the appeal (hence clubbing down) as much as the lighter feel, slimmer profile and the forgiveness. I have decent length in my game already (270ish off driver, 160-165 off 7 iron, etc).

I have a set of Cobra S3 Max combo irons. I am going to replace them with these Epic Forged. When comparing my Cobra lofts to the Epic I am found that there is really only a 1 club difference in lofts between most clubs. (S3 5i is 25*/ Epic 6i is 24*); (S3 6i is 28*/Epic 7i 27*); (S3 7i is 31*/Epic 8i s 31.5*); (S3 8i is 35*/Epic 9i is36*) and there is around 1/4" difference in shaft length. The wedges do have about 2* loft difference. I won't bore you with that comparison. I am a short hitter and have never been concerned about the club I use compared to my buds. I have always used one or more clubs. No one makes fun of me and besides, I don't care. What I care about is the final score.

I figure these clubs arw probably great for high handicaps or beginners , only problem is who is out there thats new to the game spending so much on a set of irons.? So then you are left with skilled golfers who just cant hit them like they used to due to age or possibly injury or both, i feel like these clubs can make the game fun again for many people struggling with distance . If the clubs are forgiving and consistent then the loft amd the distance really doesnt matter as how far your 7 iron goes is unique to you , some peoole need all the distance they can get out of it and shouldn't be shamed for choosing a strong lofted forgiving iron, each individual should play their own game so provided the clubs are legal it doesnt matter what you play .

Hmm so a player with decent club head speed would have 4 irons 7 to pw and then need at least 4 more wedges... Seems legit... To be honest, the consistency in terms of distance and spin with the various strikes was impressive but I just don't see the buyer for these. Any half decent player will just have a nightmare gapping them. It's already an issue with the 30 degree lofted 7 iron sets out there hitting the 180 plus mark. I reckon if they had kept the lofts more honest they'd have a much bigger audience.

They actually do. Well, there is an extra gap wedge, called at "approach wedge".

Too much money for a "trick" club, which is really what it is. I don't understand why manufacturers are doing this? Everyone is privy to the information and any good golfer knows that these "longer" hitting clubs are just lofted strong. Makes no sense! I'm playing the Wilson V6 irons now and will probably go to the new staff like you have Mike. :)

Extra long, extra light, extra strong loft, extra price = target audience of RICH SENIORS

If I order these I'll have them bent 3° strong 1i thru 9i... then get 7 or 8 wedges LOL!!!

Why do you say niche market if it’s an iron that has super tight dispersion with great distance and ball speed? Sounds like it works for just about any level golfer as long as you have the wallet.

swisstrader niche because of the price point

@@MichaelNewtonGolf just bought an outlet condition Japanese version set with Nippon pro moddus 3 tour 120 shaft for $360 from Callaway pre owned. Price point worth it?

Good video! But the lofts and shaft lengths are getting absolutely ridiculous. They will only lead to courses having to be made longer, which means it will take longer time to play. Not my cup of tea.

Callaway have taken idiotosy to a new level. It's crazy you'd have to have 5 or 6 wedges to make up distance gaps.

It's like in "This Is Spinal Tap" where the guitar player's amplifier "goes to 11." Nigel Tufnel: The numbers all go to eleven. Look, right across the board, eleven, eleven, eleven and... Marty DiBergi: Oh, I see. And most amps go up to ten? Nigel Tufnel: Exactly. Marty DiBergi: Does that mean it's louder? Is it any louder? Nigel Tufnel: Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where? Marty DiBergi: I don't know. Nigel Tufnel: Nowhere. Exactly. What we do is, if we need that extra push over the cliff, you know what we do? Marty DiBergi: Put it up to eleven. Nigel Tufnel: Eleven. Exactly. One louder. so...these clubs are "one longer." Same thing with the Callaway Rogue X irons I bought. My 7 is 27 degrees too.

Your over traditional and who cares what the number on the bottom is. Just carry 2 more wedges and you have it!

Why buy a club that when you hit it anywhere on the face it still goes on the green?....is that a real question? lol

Totaly pointless clubs ,you would need about 6 wedges to gap these things ,my 7 iron is 34 , my pitching wedge is 46 .People still buy in to this crap ,the only reason they go that far is because the lofts are jacked up to hell .An Iron is a bit of mettle stuck on a stick .
@booger65man5 жыл бұрын
Only high handicap players would be willing to show up to the course with any of these uber $$ clubs and then get beat by a good player with some 20 year old sticks with worn out grooves. That player would be better off putting that $$ in some lessons and stick with second hand clubs. This move by manufacturers towards producing $$ clubs that target bad players is a head scratcher.

Luke warmwater - I agree mate but people always belive the hype and still belive they can buy a golf game .

Marketing mumbo jumbo... this is for someone has a serious injury and needs distance and forgiveness now... or you are spot on and this is for the guy on the course who ask every time what club are you using... When you say 5i and they say 7i they feel great but when they fly one over the green with their Gap wedge and throw the club in frustration I’ll happily take the set off their hands for 1/5th the price 😂

Will never buy this. What a joke the lofts are! Geez going to be fub listening to idiots online boasting they hit their 7 iron 200. Own goal from Callaway because only thing people talk about are the stupid lofts
