The Dirty Shirley 40 is my holy grail of amps after many, many years of searching.. Had it several years now and have never once had the desire to get something else.. until this.

I'm very much considering getting this amp, since I love my BE-50 Deluxe so much. Dave said the power section is based off of a JTM-45. Do you think, in your opinion, since you already own a Dirty Shirley, that it is like a Modified JTM-45, capable of heavier tones than your average everyday JTM-45, kinda like Dave's BE Amps are like Modified Marshall Plexi's. Asking you this because you seem to be alot more knowledgeable than me, and yes, I already know that a JTM-45 is a specific type of Marshall Plexi, since I know that there were a few different types of Plexis that Marshall made.. Thanks in advance brother. I just hope that if I shell out the money for this amp, that it will give me noticeably different tones than my BE-50 Deluxe Amp Gives Me. Take care.

@@sonnyseabury636 they are just different.. the BE is heavier but the DS can get pretty heavy and is just looser/warmer..

Dave Friedman makes some great amps. A couple years ago I was playing the BE-100 at Sweetwater's Gearfest. Someone behind me started telling me what all the switches did. I realize it was Dave himself. Super chill dude.

Mkay... so it has a tube rectifier, which is not very robust? Should I be concerned about this if I purchase a Twin Sister or Dirty Shirley? And the SW port... is that for a foot switch to change channels and/or something else?
@BigHairyGuitars
@BigHairyGuitars 3 жыл бұрын
Dirty Shirley's have been on the road and in studios for many years now, they're build very well. I don't think there's anything to worry about there. Well... These things are full of glass tubes, so it's as robust as a tube amp can be. The SW port is to change from CH1 to CH2.

clean sure, max output peaks around 50 watts give or take. it would be higher if a solid state rectifier is plugged into the tube rectifier slot.

So the twin amp channels would compare on the market to say a Fillmore by Mesa? With Dave's unique take on it obviously.... The amp sounds great on the reviews I have watched ....the Fillmore seems to be hit or miss for many....so far damn near every review I have watched or read online is all positive

So why does Dave have Marshall rig in the background?
@BigHairyGuitars
@BigHairyGuitars Жыл бұрын
Dave is an unapologetic vintage Marshall lover. His amps are not 1:1 of a vintage Marshall. In many ways, his amps solve a LOT of problems that come with using old Marshalls. But, I know he'd agree, there's something magical and sexy about the old school vintage Marshalls.

My kind of amp. After years of chasing tones and owning many great amps I found a late 1969 JMP 50 with the bass circuit and it didn't have the metal sound and was more organic like ZZ top, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Zeppelin, Bad Company, Free, Van Halen etc. Very round and organic but still breaks up just as much as any other Marshall I've owned but not as bright and ice picky. The big difference is when it does break up or even saturate it sounds brown or organic and not metalic or harsh. Still crisp but not metalic. All the Marshall's I had past 71-72 sounded more metalic, hard, and very bright. This 69 metal panel 1986 circuit sounds crisp and plenty bright but warmer and not ice picky or overly bright like a lot of Marshalls. Very very classic rock. Never had another amp do classic rock as well. No nead to jump channels and I notice every input sounds great on it's own which I also never got from any other Marshall. It's got that fat squishy sag thing like they mention here about the Dirty Shirley even though it is solid state rectified. I compared this JMP 50 to my 71 super lead side by side back and forth and people always thought the 50 watt JMP sounded better. To me they sounded exactly the same even though the 71 was a lead circuit when you get into the saturated brown sound there isn't a lot of difference except the feel with the 100 being stiffer or tighter and you don't feel it sag like the 50. I personally love that sag and squish. The volume on the 100 was just way too much and the 50 much more managable and ear friendly. The Dirty Shirley/ twin sister is a cool amp and in the same vein except It can do more than my Marshall and sounds like it has a little more scooped midrange here (power tubes?) or maybe its the way he set it here to sound heavier. I like the AC/DC sounds I heard a guy get from an early Dirty Shirley and when I played many of the Friedmans at an amp show the Dirty Shirley was the best for me. It felt like a more refined more modern version of my JMP but of course the power tubes have a little different flavor. The JMP bass circuit is the JTM 45 preamp circuit but runs EL34's with solid state rectification which gives it a happy medium between the early JTM 45 and the later lead circuits. This JMP 50 bass circuit is the amp Duane Allman favored. Im considering either the Dirty Shirley or Twin Sister to cover similar ground but with a little more JTM 45 flavor.

Very interesting observations. Hopefully Marshall or Friedman can recreate some of those great tones. Unfortunately it won't be inexpensive for people that don't really play out much.

Great to see Dave. I always love seeing creators. However, not to hurt the guy interviewing... but please, prepare a little. He’s clearly like reading a checklist or something and it just detracts for me. I know I’m being picky and appreciate the opportunity to hear Dave’s thoughts but hey, if you are gonna do it, do it right. Prepare a bit next time man. There was great questions you could have asked too. Here’s an opportunity to interview one of the premiere amp builders and we really didn’t go anywhere with this interview. This is equivalent of interviewing Jim Marshall in 1965. Think.
WHAT’S THAT?
