hey one recomendation, this is a good video but it leaves out one of the most important points: changing the resolution of the audio and bit depth, so far NO gui app for those, and you gotta do some in the terminal to do that, it would be nice if u added that part in the video on how to change those parameters

@@janisuomela6929 Very often you hear this type of response when dealing in Linux. "No need for such an option", "users should not mess with that", "the defaults are good enough" and so on. A bit weird to be honest. You can change the resolution and bit debt usually with individual applications if they expose such functionality (and any self respecting "pro" application should). You can also change them system wide, but that depends on what your distro uses (pure ALSA, pulseaudio, pipewire, JACK, etc). Personally I always find it best to change such settings on a per-application basis to avoid issues. Most modern distros now have pipewire as a system wide sound server, which uses "sane defaults". You can change settings like bit debt (usually with a terminal or editing the proper files) but that can sometimes cause some applications to misbehave or have sound issues. In this case, I can sort of understand why the aversion on providing easily accesible toggles for the user.
@mercuriete21 күн бұрын
When using "pro audio" profile on pipewire... The sample rate Will be the same the whole graph. From the application to the Interface. And the internal bit depth is 32bit float until is converted to the Interface format (or from). So no gui needed. Just check pw-top if everything is ok. Example: you want to record at 192khz on audacity? Just set on audacity the samplerate and pipewire will configure the Interface to avoid resampling.

Speaking of audio, i've noticed fedora locks the output at 48Khz, but most audio sources use 44Khz. This makes the audio sound "wrong" (distorted) if you have decent sound equipment. You can see the format of what is being played and what is being sent to the speakers with the pw-top command (press Q to exit it).

If anyone like me has a SoundBlaster AE-7 sound card and is wondering why it sounds so strange and muffled on Linux, it's because the FX sound effects are enabled by default (don't ask me why). To disable them, open alsamixer, press F6 and select the sound card, use the arrow keys to navigate to the option that says "Enable 0" and press M to disable it. It took me years to figure this out. I thought the whole time that something about the driver was broken or misconfigured, but it turned out it wasn't and I was using the sound from Monitor forever because the connector on the motherboard was way too quiet (but that's another problem).

Then there are corner cases like the PS5 controller where the haptics can be utilized via audio stream, which is kind of cool. What is not so cool is that when you plug in the controller for the first time Pulseaudio does recognize it as USB soundcard and switches to it automatically: It's confusing to hear a muffled audio output from coming from somewhere but you're not quite sure what just happened. This is where blacklisting comes in to play which I've done manually to the configuration files. I'm not sure if pavucontrol allows graphical management of preventing automatic switching, but that would be a nice option. Hopefully these kind of exceptions get mitigated in the future.
@j_t_eklund21 күн бұрын
You forgotten one option. For SPDIF passthrough I use mpv with: conversion filters for audio types that my 5.1 device does not support. Also bypass my pulseaudio/pipewire software by using a device specific config option that uses alsa. Muting the default audio in the system is recommended and not trying to play multiple tracks at once. I do this so my full library of mixed types of audio tracks seamlessly "works". It will work on any system, even without pulseaudio or pipewire.. 🌱

I recently changed over to Linux. Linux didn't seem to know what to do with my 3.5mm jack headset: It treated the microphone and the headphones as a single audio source, so I got crossfeed. Windows handled this easily enough - plug it in, done. I got myself a USB headset instead and that sorted the issue right out of the box. Easy Filters is a great feature to have. One thing, though, is how to hide all the audio channels I simply don't use...? I've got my line-out speakers and then my headset and the microphone, but when I pull down the list it's got a lot of options - digital and analogue versions as well.
