In the Rodecaster EQ settings, you can long press the gain buttons on screen to access the Q settings - of how broad the bell is you are going to adjust. Reallty helpful if you want to broaden or slim down the area of EQ.

@@tombuck Of course!! Actually - quick question for your expertise - I have my mic running through a Vocaster 1 audio interface using XLR - when I load up the Rode Connect/Central app, it is asking me to connect a rode device. My question is if I connect directly via USB to make the updates to the sound profile, and then switch back to the XLR, will the sound profile save on the mic itself, or am I limited to the altering the sound within the Vocaster app? Hopefully that makes some semblance of sense

When you placed the thick and foamy WS2 windscreen on the Podmic USB it made it look and sound like the Mackie EM-99B. I had both of them and they're quite comparable as XLR mics. The Podmic offers USB capabilities and all the goodness of Rode Central and presets on the Rodecaster models, while the Mackie comes with the best desk stand I've ever used. I didn't end up keeping either of those mics because I bought the NT1 5th Generation by accident around the same time, and instead of returning it I kept it after really loving how it sounds with my voice. But the Mackie is really a sleeper and great deal for anyone looking for an XLR-only broadcast-style microphone that won't break the bank.

Very good tutorial although I must admit that the difference between out of the box and fine tuned isn't as big as I had hoped. Two questions: 1) Can you use two PodMics USB at the same time on the same macbook? I'd love to have a much more portable podcast studio than bringing a rodecaster (and only own MixPre-3 atm which is very nice too). 2) This is off-topic, sorry, but you might know this: How on earth do I easily record an iPhone conversation? Don't own the rodecaster anymore and when I did, it wasn't that great for the receiver of the call. But I'd love a low-impact solution without too much gear involved. Maybe a good topic for a future video?
@tombuck
@tombuck 4 ай бұрын
1. With Rode's Connect app you can use up to 4 rode USB mics at the same time. 2. For phone calls, it's tricky. Without something like a Rodecaster there's can be a lot of quirks to not only record the audio well, but make sure that both people can still hear each other too. It honestly might be best to rely on a 3rd party app (even something like Zoom or Ecamm) and then record the conversation there.
@andreasdk

Compression seems confusing: Can't you do the same compression using equaliser by cancelling the highest highs and bumping up the human voice highs? Is there a set number of "bell" points or can you add more "bell" points to the equaliser?

The technical explanation is probably beyond me, but compression is more "holistic" opposed to an EQ which can be dialed in to focus on just a few specific things.

I had to EQ the new POD mic a lot more than the old mic for whatever reason. I don't have one (and honestly don't want one).

Interesting. I've found that they sound VERY similar, with the new one being slightly less harsh than the original. Could vary from copy to copy though?

The Rode software only works with Rode USB mics, but the Rodecaster will work with any XLR mic 👍

And what part of your voice will be cut off if you activate the high pass filter at 70 Hz? I don't think this is teaching people the right usage scenario for a high pass filter.

You can definitely get more technical with it, but that's not what this video is for. The HPF eliminates lower frequencies, which helps with environmental sounds and certain voices. It varies depending on voice, so there's no definitive answer as to the exact setting to use.

The Mini should have enough gain to power the PodMic just fine.

That's odd for Rode. Usually the bass is over emphasis and the highs suffer. Interesting.

Hi Tom. Congrats on yet another great video. What you explain in this one is perfect for when you're wearing your solo podcasting hat. But if you're like so many other people I know, you're sometimes wearing a different hat. When you're wearing your musical hat, you may wish to watch Joe in kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5esqIZ5n6Z-eqc for a totally different way to handle a vocal that differs from what you explained for speaking. Cheers!

Man, the PodMic sounds horrible out of the box. Horrible! I can ALWAYS tell when someone is using one. Your presets making it sound better than I've ever heard it before after hearing it hundreds of times.

I just got a Road Podmic, unfortunately my sound card doesn't support XLR, so I customise a XLR to 3.5mm cable, it got no sound at all, even I plug into my pc also no sound, seems like it only support XLR to XLR?

..with time, i agree more with "the content is the most important".. We can get lost in tweaking.. ..today i was hearing without headphones, and is hard to notice any difference..I think, a Marantz, would be a great mic to test.. ...i would guess you would have around an old a pc.. .It would be fun one day, to see an episode, of you poking around, with OBS(so powerful it became, that almost nothing else needed), DaVinci Resolve , Touch portal, Audacity, Streamyard....just to be demanding on paid software, when choosing.. ..
