I feel like you should have encoded the image as base64. Base64 is only 33% larger than a binary encoding, so you are transferring 133% of the minimum amount of data, as opposed to this scenario where you are transferring 200% (to your web server and then from your web server to the api). Of course upload and download speeds of each component is important as well.. also I am assuming the image is encoded with maximum efficiency in your set up.
