We traveled in our RV fulltime for 12 years and gave up DirecTV after 3 years (took our old single knob dish from the old house & used it) due to the cost increases. Went to antennas only & never looked back. Now we've resettled into a regular house again and we only use an antenna to get all local channels & the sub channels they provide. We don't care for the current cable or streaming stuff, so we happy with getting out local channels for especially weather related issues and watching the channels like story, defy, grit, outlaw, laff,.... Along with a extensive DVD collection - we're happy paying nothing!

Have you considered reusing the satellite dish for watching open Ku-band video signals? Ku-band LNBs are readily available, with the biggest trouble being mounting them. Broadcasters may drop networks at any time (I should know, KMAX-TV dropped Laff and Nosey programming is currently streamed in where Laff had been served) or 2+ channels may affiliate with the same network (Sacramento has *three Grit affiliated* channels, two ShopLC stations [one's an MPEG-4 test] and two QVC2s [again, one's an MPEG-4 test]).

I never signed up for cable. What I do for entertainment is I have some services: Crunchyroll (anime): about $8 a month HiDive (anime) : about $4 a month (terrible UI and may not be worth it with its poor library but has some good exclusives) I also have Nebula and Curiousity Stream that was bundled for $16 a year and I did it to support a KZbin channel. I barely use the service, but it is also the cheapest non-free service by far. KZbin: I watch videos for "free" (has the cost of watching ads) Then I also read some Mangas. It is easy to find uploaded Mangas ... I mean you can officially read each chapter of a manga once for free with at least one manga company (manga plus app) Then there are videogames. I got a refurbished computer and a refurbished gpu that I installed Linux on. With that I played steam games (like The Witcher 3) and free open source games from the Linux app repository (like SuperTuxKart). I also eventually got a Steam Deck to play games on and played some smaller titles, then I made a Batocera OS hard drive to boot into to play retro games so I do that too. I wanna make a server, so at some point I will have Jellyfin which will allow me to be a self hosted steaming service for my family. I also wanna put ebooks on there and get digital copies of all my physical books so that we can read on the go for entertainment (and maybe find audiobook options so that I can "read" while I am doing other things like cooking or washing dishes). I don't listen to music as much as I would like too so I want to put some music up on my server to share with my family too when I get around to it.

Thanks for your great information! Love Tyler the Antenna man! We used his recommendation for an in-house antenna. We put it in the highest corner of our garage closest to the tower we were trying to get. Then we hooked up the cable from the antenna to our old cable wiring which means we can plug any tv in our house up to the old cable input and they all get network tv from the one antenna!
@frommatorav15 ай бұрын
I did that too. I have 2 sets of wires that reach all the rooms in my house. One is the cable feed and the other was for satellite. Both feeds are joined in my house box and I connected my antenna to the mast, that used to hold the satellite dish. The satellite feed goes the into a splitter, which feeds the satellite line outlets and a cable amp, which outputs to the cable outlets (4-5). The outlet in my LR goes to a splitter amp, supplied from the TV antenna and it goes to a Tablo Quad DVR and my TV. With a streaming stick, smart TV or computer, I can watch the Tablo live TV or DVR recordings, anywhere in the house. The other 2 TV's have live tuner signals in case the Tablo stops working. It's been good for almost 2 years so far.

The only thing I may do in the future is get a box that would give me the ATSC 3.0 signals that they are now broadcasting in my area. Losing Locast was unfortunate. When we had DirecTV and during a dispute with one of the local TV networks that I think was NBC during football season that they added the Locast app so that we could still watch that network. Indoor antennas do work for some, but not all where I am. I cannot pick up our ABC station, but pretty much the other networks are fine plus the other independent channels as well as some additional HD channels that most of the networks put out like Movies, Buzzr and even Antenna TV. It seems that my best option to get all of our channels is going to have to be an outdoor antenna since the Atlanta area is so vast. I really appreciate all that you do to help us find cheaper alternatives for watching whatever content we can get for a lower price. I really don't understand why more Americans don't have antennas to get free local stations. In the 1950s and 60s, 100% percent of TV households had at least one antenna. But today, many people act as though antennas are some sort of impossible technology to figure out or that an antenna won't work at their home. Antennas may not work for a small number of households, i.e. homes in the mountains or too far away from the broadcast location. But the overwhelming majority of US households can get their locals with an antenna. If you spend no more than an hour researching what type of antenna you need for your home and no more than an hour installing the antenna you should be all set. I told this to a co-worker of mine and he said, "I don't have that kind of time." And I said, "Then how do you have time to watch TV?" He couldn't answer that question. Plus there are DVRs you can buy to record over the air channels. This is ultimately way less expensive for your locals than a live TV streaming service.
@kingtrance3077 ай бұрын
True but not everybody is comfortable climbing up on a high rooftop and doing the installation and running the coaxial cable, drilling holes, mounting the outdoor antenna, sealing up the work properly etc. It’s actually a skill to do it right. In 2027, ATSC1 will be discontinued. Broadcasters are lobbying for the switchover whether or not everyone is ready. The new system is pay TV ready. Although, TV stations will be free at first, you can bet that you'll have to pay a fee or sign up to their streaming service to watch it. Because of this, I don't plan to do any upgrades to my outdoor antenna set up. I don't see the value in it if in a few years, I'll have to pay for it. If I did not travel, have multiple people in my house, and use my accounts at work, then Sling would be the way to go, but I use KZbin TV that has the locals for college football games, and Peacock for the WWE Premium Live Events.

Unless they are ending over the air broadcasts, it is not changing at all. All I do is change the input to "antenna". Even when I had cable years ago, I still had to do that because cable was always feuding with the local channels and blocking them. So again, no change at all.
@crodrules7 ай бұрын
There have been changes to some of the options shown in the video, such as Puffer. It is still a good list for those of us who can't get OTA reception of all of the local network stations with an antenna. That is one thing that I hope does change, and the sooner, the better.
@raylopez997 ай бұрын
TV is for seniors, but, that said, it seems to me the price of cable is simply the amortized cost of installing an antenna for most people, and since most people are mechanically inept and/or cannot install an antenna for legal reasons (living in a rental), the price of cable TV goes up. It's all good since we invested in cable stocks like Comcast so we're compensated.

You are fortunate to receive your local ABC affiliate. I learned from Tyler the antenna man and doing some reasearch, ABC Affiliates use to be UHF when the digital switch was in demand. However after the reband 2.0, ABC affiliates switched to VHF which lowered their broadcast power.
@brwilkie58565 ай бұрын
This is market dependent, so the blanket statement of them reverting to VHF isn't entirely true. The digital transition basically pushed ALL locals channels to the UHF band. My local ABC (on ch 10) went to UHF 26 after the digital switch. One of the exceptions which Tyler has discussed many times, is ABC6 Philadelphia, which chose to REMAIN on VHF 6...limiting its pickup with a large number of viewers.
@brucelipsitz75453 ай бұрын
@@brwilkie5856 Exactly - I assume the virtual channel of your ABC affiliate remains 10, even through they broadcast on 6. WPVI-V Philadelphia chose to remain on physical channel 6. The low UHF band (physical channels 2-6) has a bad reputation regarding reception.
@crosslink14932 ай бұрын
Here in Los Angeles the ABC affiliate is still on a VHF band and comes in OK, no issues compared to the other major stations. It must be your region and the station itself. When I installed an antenna I made sure it had the wider VHF 'rods'(?) for those lower frequency stations like ABC.

Getting your own antenna should be moved up from #9 to #1. The cost of an antenna, a Tablo Quad DVR, 2TB HDD for Tablo storage was a one time cost of about $350. It costs about $50 to get the Tablo guide for a year, which I got, but that's optional. So for the last 2 years, local TV has cost me nothing extra except the price to renew the guide once. The new Tablo units are different than mine. They include free streaming channels and the guide is no extra cost.
@Michael-Joseph1233 ай бұрын
With the new Tablo generation 4, the tv guide is free, I have it, and it's good, but I use a splitter and just use the tablo for recording, it's to slow for channel surfing, but it also comes in handy if you want to put a small tv on your deck or in your garage, you don't have to run a antenna wire.

I watch most shows on my laptop. It's just convenient. We do have tvs in the house with antennas and do have a couple of streaming pay apps like Netflix. I canceled Hulu because the only shows I watched on their site were shows that I could watch for free on ABC or Fox. I have to wait a week for the newest uploaded show to watch last weeks episode, but that's okay with me. I grew up without ways to record tv shows, so we sometimes would miss an episode if we were out. At least now I can still watch a show it just will be a week after the first airing and it's free,. I can watch the local or Nightly news on my laptop or a tv.

Many local stations already stream their daily newscasts. The agreements that network affiliates have with their network (e.g. the ABC affiliate here in Atlanta is WSB) likely prohibit them from steaming network programming. WSB does stream their newscasts.

I need to look into this more. I remember Locast integrated with Sling for a time. I’m not aware of Mohu doing that, but I will explore some options. The one thing I like about Tablo is it’s an app on my Roku so I access the local through that. (I have an older Tablo, not the new one shown in the video.)
@crodrules7 ай бұрын
Try hooking the antenna up to an AirTV device. This gives you the ability to access your antenna channels through the Sling app, alongside their streaming channels. Sling has a free streaming service (Sling Freestream) so you don't even need a paid subscription to Sling to be able to use this feature. Or, if you have a Roku TV, just hook up your antenna directly to the TV, and use the Live TV (tuner) app built into the Home Screen. This gives you the antenna channels in the same guide as Roku's free streaming channels from The Roku Channel.

@@amazingeric97The same could be said for ABC, when Monday Night Football moved over to their sister network, ESPN. The only reason ABC got it back last season was because of the writers' and actors' strikes.
