Hahaha ...To their defense , distance is not the same from one province /state to another in the Netherlands and the USA. I understand why she would think it’s in the “outskirts” of Amsterdam : a 2 hours train commute takes you to the outskirts of LA , while in the Netherlands it gets you to Nijmegen :)

Lol, I dated this Dutch guy for a few months and I still couldn't pronounce his last name and just barely his first name 😆😆😆😆. So I usually just call him moppie.... Which I was told it's endearment, like sweetheart or darling in Dutch.

You can drive across the entire length of the Netherlands in 4 hours. I imagine for Americans the whole country seems like Amsterdams outskirts. (Eindhoven is 3 provinces/“states” over from Amsterdam)

As a massive soccer fan that is pretty good with names, gotta say Gijs is not a Dutch name I've ever heard. But I'm willing to bet his last name has 'Van' in it and two 'O' s and a 'J' somewhere.

Van means From, my last name is van der Wal which literally translates to from the shore. If I was a guessing man my ancestors probably were sailors or dockworkers.
