I remember the time when I've done my first dopamine detox. The moment you realize how critically addicted to screens you are is when you decide to leave them aside - for the first day I felt like a crackhead craving a hit. It really does make me wonder how our brains would operate if there weren't technology around us

i didn't realize how bad my phone / screen dependency was until i tried to lower my screen time last year and it caused me severe anxiety. i think it's important to acknowledge how harmful it can be even if we don't use social media. i definitely want to use my screens way less.

Did you get over the anxiety? For me it's more of a depression. I've been forced to be offline for weeks when I moved to a remote location and it took 4-6 weeks until the phone company people did my internet connection and I felt miserable. Slept many hours during the day, relapsed in my bad eating habits, etc. I want to get rid of or at least strongly reduce my screen time but I'm honestly worried for my mental health.

Maybe it felt pointless sometimes because you were focusing on time and not on what you are doing during that time, like 13h on social media is extremely harmful but using spotify while working out or reading, google maps when you need directions etc won't do any bad. The big problem we have is that we pick our phone to use the calculator and then decide to watch 2h of KZbin 😭 the best way to challenge ourselves without being extreme is to try to reduce our screentime on apps that we use as escapism

I realised for my self that I use my phone as a distraction and numbing mechanism sometimes if I am having a bad time. After a while I tried to stop doing that and just sit with my thoughts. Journaling and writing them out can help as well. It’s a much healthier way to live and it helped me get to know myself better. I also realised that I have undiagnosed ADHD and my phone was like a Dopamine source. Overall, the less time I spend on screens (phone or laptop), consuming content, the better for my creativity. I have so many ideas and so much inspiration if I am off screen. Doing something creative on screen is okay tho, it’s just the endless consumption of media that numbs my mind. Well done on getting through the week!

tip for others struggling: get an alarm clock and start sleeping with your phone outside of your room! not having it right next to you first thing in the morning really helps in resetting your brain and feeling less dependent on the dopamine we get from scrolling.

my screen time has also been kinda bad so as a solution, I had my mom take my phone for the summer (I'm using my tablet which is less distracting to watch informational videos without getting distracted) so far its been great and I've implemented habits such as working out and reading. Once school starts in September I hope to decrease my screen to an hour and then maybe 30 min depending on varying circumstances :)

The bonus day (where you said you failed at 38 minutes) was definitely not a failure. The important takeaway you got this week wasn't "I can use my phone less than exactly x minutes a day", but that you could lower your screen time and understand what your bad habits are (e.g., you learned you don't need to rely on maps, to appreciate music rather than just playlist scrolling, and developed an awareness for when your phone is unlocked). Everyone is different, and people trying to lesser their screen time to x minutes will vary, and the lessons they learn about their personal usage and happiness will vary, too. Great video!

OMG I love your video style, its so natural and reminds me of 2000s youtube videos. I enjoyed every bit of the video and as someone trying to deal with my electronics/internet addiction I think the 2 big things to focus on, is actually staying away from the electronics/internet AND figuring out what to do instead. Once these two things are figured out you are pretty much okay. Staying away from the phone still will remain a hurdle but over time and consistent efforts, the hurdle shrinks till you are able to cross it effortlessly with the least energy.

I'm trying this thing where I set my goal not to completely stop using my phone (even though 10 hours of screen time isn't good anyway), but to make my screentime productive and enjoyable. If I use it to read a book, listen to music, or watch a video while I'm cleaning my room - it's okay. I just try not to scroll tiktok for 3 hours, or watch something when I don't even want to.

i really resonated with your video. i just watched this on my laptop lying down on a mattress and i couldn't stop slapping the bed for the shared experiences and emotions. i did a 1 hour a day challenge instead of a 30 minute one. i also had moments where i believed i "lost my phone", i also noticed how having spotify closed didnt affect my screen time, and i also felt productive on my laptop rather than my addicting phone. what really helped me was learning that going on your phone for 2 hours a day = 1 month of your life/ i used to average 6-7 hours a day, so that would be 1/4 of my year purely on my phone. that sounded horrifying to me. anyways, congrats on your W michelle. i just subscribed

I love this idea but I think you should try it with not counting things like using your alarm, maps, listening to music while doing other things, guitar tuner, etc.! Like I use my phone for all those things plus calendar, to do list and grocery list and I have no issues doing that. The 30 minutes should be for really non-productive/addictive things

9:36 sounds so much like my ADHD. I didn’t beat phone addiction but after graduation and having all summer free to do everything I wanted, I realized that telling myself I’m just lazy because school is exhausting is kind of just a lie and not having school doesn’t magically make me productive. With ADHD, being productive can be the worst task ever unless you suddenly have a strong impulse to do it. I did do a little more creative stuff than usual and got more things done. But the amount of love I have for things like painting, embroidery and sewing should’ve enabled me to do it every single day. Some weeks I basically did nothing. It can be depressing but knowing it’s ADHD has saved me a lot of mental breakdowns. I don’t want to diagnose people of course, just wanted to put this out there for you and others who might relate to what you said. ADHD feels so normal until you realize this is literally not what a lot of people’s lives feel like at all. We’re not alone in this though 💕

@@snehasharma732its an attention deficit with or without hyperactivity. usually people with adhd are associated with being lazy when it’s actually way more than that, being unable to concentrate on tasks, privileging procrastination instead of focusing on a task because of poor decision making, impulsivity and poor concentration are all symptoms. it’s also being distracted very easily, needing to fidget, having a problem with deadlines or being on time, finding yourself constantly forgetting and losing things. it’s impatience and finding yourself talking over people, not handling frustration well and a lot more depending on the person. before being diagnosed something that made me realize i might have it was during a school year when i fully stopped being able to concentrate on subjects that i disliked and found a lot of stuff boring and it got to a point where i would do important homework at the last minute or not doing them at all. i felt burnt out from school because i find it boring. also look up adhd paralysis if you don’t know what it is. its what made me understand that something was really behind all my “laziness”. those are all symptoms that you’ve probably already read on the internet but if you want to talk more about it leave your instagram @ and i will dm you if you want to discuss it :) i hope this still helped!!

At my old job I would leave my cellphone in my locker in the break room at the end of my shifts and over my weekend, that quite literally forced me to use it way less and I felt so mentally clean. But, it's easy to stay away from it if you put it somewhere far away, the real strength comes with being able to have it right beside you and just choose not to touch it. I completely lack that willpower which mentally disturbs me lol

there has to be a reason you keep going back... if your life was filled with things you enjoyed more you'd naturally just not want to use social media as much. It's not really about any specific habit that you need to get rid of, just more about reflecting on the way you use your time and seeing if it aligns with your goals and values. If not, why? Are you distracting yourself from something? Scared to take a step in life so you're procrastinating? etc

I have been able to cut back from ~ 11 hours to ~ 3 a day and I’m looking to do more! I find myself actually doing the hobbies I love and not doom scrolling 😊

Im crying thinking about when we were trying to stalk your old family friends and the screentime limit kept popping up and you kept dismissing them😭 😭

If you're still trying to limit screen time, I'd recommend really looking at what apps you have and deciding if they are a necessity or are they something you could instead use on your laptop. Another idea is removing apps from the main homescreen, I've found using that really puts into perspective what apps I actually seek out vs its just in front of me so I use it if that makes sense. Also that part where you were feeling overwhelmed by thoughts, you could take up journaling as a hobby if writing things out interests you. This was a great video! I think bumping the cut off to 1-2 hours of screentime would be more realistic considering you use some apps as a necessity like navigation/maps.

I don't like that the screen time on iPhones counts every moment your screen is on which I think is dumb. Like if I'm reading on the kindle app, I don't want that to count. Or doing logistical things like setting up alarms and stuff. I wish you could customize what is counted in your daily time!

Great video, like always :) I need to do this. My biggest issue is I spend hours on youtube, and there is nothing wrong, but I will watch videos that don't benefit me at all. Like I spend hours watching drama videos, gaming, and much more. I want to start watching educational videos like yours and much more. My issues aren't Instagram, TikTok, and much more because the truth is, I am not a big fan of that platform because, honestly, I wouldn't say I like short-form content. I prefer the long-term. That's why I spend so much time on youtube, but I want to be more active, like doing things instead of watching, like cleaning my room, cooking, walking, ft friends, hangout w people, reading, diamond panting, and much more. I still want to watch youtube but not spend 8+ hours on youtube, so I want to cut down and do other things throughout the day.

Thanks, this was a wakeup call for me LMAO - gonna keep myself accountable by commenting but my weekly average is around 7-9 hrs a day which is frankly terrible and i will aim for 4 hours this next week (my sis is also doing this challenge and reducing hers from 4 to 2.5 hrs) :3

got the screen time notif and it said my new weekly average is 4 hrs 45 mins!! (probs cos it wasn't the start of the week when I started this challenge so it had a few days of my old screentime in there). gonna keep reducing it slowly, I finished reading a book and it felt so good to do that instead of scrolling mindlessly

This was so relatable at 10:00 whatever you said is everything i go through, i just think everyone else don’t have to struggle through this, they’re just living without any bother and I’m the only odd one out, my mind is the only odd one out where i just want to get away from my mind, from my brain i wish i could escape my own brain. I’m so glad to see I’m not the only one I thought i was going mentally ill lol

Long comment warning omg: Your first day, struggling to figure out how to send a text or do anything productive within 30 mins, I think is notable. Also how you said your relationship with your computer is different than your phone because it’s more for work than entertainment. At least for me, restricting how long I’m allowed to look at my phone is not helpful, but changing the way I use it is more important. E.g. I remember the trend recently of people getting a “dumb” phone that ends up costing tons of money and sucks anyway, and I always thought, “why not turn your iphone into a dumb phone?” Like, delete those apps meant solely for entertainment so your phone can only use texts, emails, alarm clock, etc. The only times I have found success in reducing screen time and being more productive is when I remove them from my life completely; time limits just don’t work (hence why I’m on KZbin rn, I may need to delete it again soon) Another example of “screen does not equal EVIL” is you trying to practice guitar, but you couldn’t use the app. Viewers, use the apps it’s ok!! Apps for self improvement or hobby, messaging friends, etc. are not the same as tiktok or Instagram. Nowadays I’ve been using a language study app that takes quite a bit of screen time, but it’s not endless scrolling. Being mindful of what you do with your screen time is more important than cutting it out, I think. Also, another thing that stood out to me was how you placed great weight on “failing,” that 38 minutes counts as a failure compared to 30, and it made you more likely to say “fuck it, I’ve already failed, I can’t fail twice.” That’s another issue I see with these hard locks on screen time, because it take a complicated relationship w your phone and makes it very black and white. Like how leaving your phone accidentally on added to screen time and made you “fail,” but you didn’t!! It just made you feel like you did. Again, being mindful of your use and having 3 hours is probably better than struggling to stay within 30 mins, scared to reply to texts, and then feeling worse when you can’t manage to stay under time. Of course I’m not knocking your vid, I understand that this was an extreme challenge just to see what would happen, and it was really interesting to see your thoughts and results, both negative and positives!! Most interesting was your reflection on the constant itching need to check your phone, and how that slowly reduced when you set an extreme limit. Also your increased interest in reading!! I’d love to hear others thoughts and experiences with working on screen addiction!

In high school I took a whole week off from my phone. I gave it to my mom to put it in the safe. I lived near the school so I didn’t need it for rides or anything. The first few days were rough and by the end I felt refreshed and my mind felt more clear of social media and and felt free of overthinking. After the week I didn’t use it as much as I used to. It felt great.
