This is incredible. I never understood why I have to put 'r' on front of dzdrd(theta). Your explanation of coordinate system made everything clear. I can't wait for spherical coordinates to appear. I have a feeling that one day, you sir, will become famous among most of the students over the entire world. Greetings from Poland. ;)

For us we gotta use the Jacobian determinant to figure it out ! Much easier using this drawing .

Yeah I always had the same doubt, but it all came down to theta = length of arc / Radius concept (theta = l/r)!

I'm impressed on how natural the r came up. In my school they say that's the jacobian, some kind of a determinant of the transformation, but it's easier to think the way you showed

The professors don't know how to make things easier for students. They talk like they're doing their research.

I will have to check out the IIT exams. We are currently working on techniques to solve the JEE test problems. I am studying the tests to see what the best strategy is since they don't give you enough time to work out every problem in detail, so you have to use the understanding of the concepts to quickly find the correct answer. Do you know the difference between the IIT and JEE exams?

I have come up with a problem of a cylinder that is laid horizontally. So that the height of the cylinder is at x direction, while the base lays in yz plane. Will it be correct if I take x-direction as the height, and take the volume integral considering r,θ and x, instead of r,θ and z?
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter which direction you place the cylinder. Try it and you should get the same answer.

One thing that bothers me about the differential element is that the inside arc length is smaller than the outside. So why are we using the longer outside arc length as the dimension to calculate the element's volume? Are we just pretending that the change in radius doesn't (dr) doesn't matter?

Hello dear teacher. Why integral of r*dr is equal to r^2/2
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen 10 ай бұрын
The rule is to add 1 to the exponent and then divide by the new exponent. This rule is explained in the calculus 1 videos.

As r dΘ, dr and dz get arbitrarily small, the volume element looks like a cube. So we can use the volume formula for a cube, even though it does have rounded edges?
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen 7 жыл бұрын
You can also use a cube (dx dy dz) but it is typically much harder if the object has the shape of a cylinder.

How can I know if whether I should use double or triple integral?
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen Жыл бұрын
Sometimes it depends on the method you use and you have a choice. Sometimes there is no choice.

@@MichelvanBiezen so in the exam the doctor will ask me to use spherical method or cylindrical? I am pretty good at both but a little bit confused on how to start
@MichelvanBiezen
@MichelvanBiezen Жыл бұрын
Typically on an exam a specific method will be asked to be used. Sometimes that is not specified and any method can be used. Sometimes, if this is a first or second semester calculus course where tripple integrals have not been introduced, then the methods are limited to those methods covered so far.
