My neighbor Sam and I headed up to Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula for an agate hunt, and we were not disappointed in our finds. Sam found a couple of beauties, and I managed to find one myself.

Sam is headed to Tech in the fall. That's one of the reasons we headed that way this year instead of the eastern U.P. like we usually do. I'm counting on him to do some scouting for me while he's there.

I grew up in the lower peninsula as well. Both of my parents went to Tech. My brother and I spent summers with our grandparents in the Keweenaw. I’m in Oregon now and try to get back there each year.

How'd you do up there, Jim? Find any good ones? Sam cleaned up, at least on small ones. I found a really great one the day I met you. It was small, but really green. I have never found a green agate before.

@@MichiganRocks I found several minor "agatey" stones, but nothing with defined bands. I found many great rocks and specimens, including several I want to cut. Also, we don't have much of the volcanic types in Lake Michigan, so I collected a set of the many different types I encountered. Also, I found many stones that are special (to me, so different from Lake Michigan stones!) that I will be tumbling or grinding and polishing. Beyond beautiful beaches I haven't seen since I was 14 y/o (only other time I visited the UP), I spent parts of two days at the Seaman Museum and took a lot of video there, which I will post on YT soon.

Part of the crystal clear water is due in part, to zebra muscles. We used to go to Big Bay Denoc in the UP , fishing. I left my fishing pole unattended to get my hubby a water from the cooler and a Northern Pike ripped right out of the holder. I didn’t have a steel leader on so it snapped the line very fast. We went back to look for my pole and I could see over 10 feet down ! I did get my pole back, only to lose it overboard the very next day! 🤣. That time I didn’t find it. But the water is so clear. The zebra muscles keep it that way. They are really ruining the Great Lakes. Hopefully they have done something about it since I have been up there, over 10 years ago. Michigan is a beautiful state. I’m originally from Maine and the two states resemble each other. Only thing is, I haven’t found any lobster 🦞 in lake Michigan yet! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 🙏🌎☮️♥️

Good finds! Love to watch you find rocks. As you know, not all Agates have banding. Here out west in Utah, we find quite a few with banding. But I have buckets of other agate that are translucent with plume-shaped, dendritic, or mossy inclusions. Lots of Piegion blood Agates, & translucent Agates with jasper or chalcedony with jasper within it...I know you don't tumble yours because most of the ones you find are very small. But we find good-sized ones here big enough to tumble & polish, which I have done & are extremely pretty when done!

Thanks for the video. Looks like you had fun. My wife and I were up in the Keweenaw over the weekend and she found a agate that looked like Sam's at 7:20. I found a lot of the prehnite. Some good pieces for tumbling and some for cutting. I love finding copper bits in them. There was a lack of yooperlite. My wife found only a few. Thanks again.

Sounds like you guys did really well! We didn't go out for Yooperlites this time, but we found lots of agates, mostly small ones, and some copper at the Central mine.

It was pretty windy for two of the days we were there, like 25 mph gusts. Since we were on a peninsula, we were able to go to the calm side each day and avoided most of it.

Haha some kinda rock on some other kinda rock, reminds me of a few weeks ago we went hounding at the creek and brought along my friends 8 year old who found a rock and proudly informed us that this rock is as hard as a rock😂 Y'all must be taking the same geology classes... ❤❤❤ Haha she also told us there was quicksand at said creek, I said NOoo there isn't any quicksand here, but wasnt a week later til we found ourselves stuck in the big middle of the sand pit slowly sinking car filling with water 😅 I'm not gonna question her knowledge again tho😂

Go get a free exam and then get your prescription. Go online and order them there. They are at least good glasses for backups. Regular glasses and sunglasses! Can't live without the Rx sunglasses now. Online is good so you can get a pair just for rock hunting. That way, if you crack/scratch them or drop them in the water, you're only out $20

@@kimfrommn7162 I have purchased from Zenni. I bought 3 pairs I believe. Other people use Zeelool often. Warby Parker lets you try on 5 frames at a time at home until you find one you like. You can also try glasses on virtually by snapping a picture of yourself on most sites. Also heard good things for Eyebuydirect and GlassesUSA. If you run across a company that catches your eye, do a couple Google searches for feedback. I tend to search, "Is *** legit?" A really important measurement to make sure you have is the bridge width. This will help you find glasses that fit your nose, not looking too big or too small. Who knew there are arm measurements and pupillary distance. Once you have the numbers, you are fine, otherwise it's a craps shoot. I can almost guarantee you can find a YT video on how to order online glasses correctly. I pick up tips every time. Best of luck to you!

As both a rockhound and a fisherman: +10,000 points to Sam for saving the Chub! And had to laugh, your “Green Rock!” is very similar to my “Red Rock!” (I love finding bright red rocks!) And gosh I need to take a trip to Lake Superior. I find a lot of Sea Maggots (or is it M-Agates? 🤔) in the seaside glacial till by me, usually iron-rich multicolor chert/jasper with quartz, but good banding is so rare. And the geology at Lake Superior is so interesting!

I find some really interesting deep green rocks here, definitely a sedimentary type that I don’t *think* will take a polish, but I do have one running in a polish batch right now as a test - fingers crossed!

1:02: I'm not the right kind of geologist but I would guess your rock is an amigdaloidal basalt or andesite since it's dark-coloured. Rhyolite has the same composition as granite (but smaller minerals) so usually is pink or red. Also this channel is great - I'm on the Canadian side of the lakes and teach geology so often encourage students to check you out to learn about beach rocks (or glacial erratics) they may find!

You would probably know better than I would. I am not any kind of geologist! A lot of the rocks on that beach are red and I think they're rhyolite. This one wasn't nearly as red, so maybe it's basalt. Sounds like we agree on the amygdaloidal part, so that's good! Thanks for recommending this amateur to your students!

My beloved and I just group categorize all of them as "Ites", since we are in a constant state of befuddlement about the Prehnite, Patricianite, Thompsonite issue. And last year, Sand Bay was just that...sand.

It fluctuates between rocks and sand from what I've seen. We were at the west end of the bay. The ites confuse me too. I can narrow it down to one of those three. Green prehnite is the only one I'm fairly certain about.

Hi there! Just started watching your tumbling videos and I had a question! So - I had tumbled some stones and put them through all the grit cycles, and I am not happy with the end result. Am I able to start from the beginning at grit 1 and re-tumble them? Or do I need to start them at a later grit stage? Your videos have been super helpful!!

You can probably just go back to the second to last stage unless you see something that you really want to grind out more. If they're just dull but otherwise ok, don't go further back. I wish I knew the answer to that. I have never gotten a pebble in them, but they fill right up with sand if the water is rough and stirring it up. That doesn't bother me for one day, but I just got back from a trip and after two days, the tops of some of my toes were raw. On the third day, I wore socks for some more protection and the water was calm. I tried to avoid sandy areas, but by the end the the day (about 6-7 hours), there was some sand in them. I'm not a geologist and I don't know all that much about rocks compared to some people. My expertise is more in polishing them. I'd love to be able to teach people about rocks or polishing rocks in person but making these videos takes up too much of my time. The idea of the videos is to teach a lot more people without anyone having to travel.

I'm not a geologist, so I don't know for sure. My guess would be the mineral epidote, but that's just a guess.
