I posted this on a blog which doesn't like Michio's views! Look you guys, it's very easy to decimate a good idea, hope, reality, what-have-you. The ethos of the Kaku statements are good. We are like warring feudal states at the moment. I don't like your head scarf so I'll kill you. That patch of oil is mine so I'll fight you for it. I don't like your agenda so I'll have my own, whatever it involves. Kaku is not saying that cultures will be lost, in fact they will be strong and there but an overriding "language" and "culture" is needed if we are not to kill each other and destroy the earth in the petty antics of nation squabbling. I cannot see an alternative to science providing this culture and Kaku, who is immersed in this culture, speaks from within it and is respected. Religion has been the dominant culture and has wreaked chaos through the millenia. Let us depart from this dominant culture and embrace science with it's a common goal of trying to sort things out in a practical manner. We discovered and controlled fire, a scientific breakthrough, which led to the furtherance of humankind. There are many more breakthroughs which will be discovered if we put our common minds to it. Climate change and the battle against it is an example of the whole human race putting their minds to solving a common problem with science. This is what Kakau is refering to, big moves from everyone using science not religion or subjectivity. Of course there will always be an elite in governance, there always is and always will be but I would prefer to be in a human race that survives, with an elite, than in a civilisation that kills itself and the earth because we can't settle our differences and get on with the job of developing strategies to help everyone on this planet and yes get to being a better civilisation. In the current turmoil of the world leaders should be in the background preparing to merge their countries, of course with suitable and fair governance for all. Can you imagine this? How wonderful. Of course this could all be tosh but if we don't try and function as one organism, of course retaining our differences, we will keep on trying to eat each other up and, in this latter scenario, the digestif will surely sour the the meal. What happens if a civilization, which is below 1 on the scale, suddenly discovers a new mode of space travel that enables them to traverse lightyears in seconds and expands rapidly across the galaxy? would they instantly be bumped up to type 3, or would they have to fulfill the planet and star mastery of types 1 and 2 first? Take, I don't know, Elite Dangerous as an example. In the year 3302 humans have mastered interstellar travel, zooming from star system to star system in seconds and roughly 30,000 colonized stars under their belt, but they don't have a way of using the star their colonies and space stations they orbit around for energy, neither do they control the weather or have oceanic cities on the alien planets they inhabit. They use fusion reactors instead. Would they constitute as a type 3 even though they haven't discovered how to manipulate stars and planets? or would they be confined to type 1?

And yes it is possible to go faster than light. in a way. by warping space to inflate space behind it and shrink space in front of it, the vessel can 'surf' on space and, theoretically, go faster than light. That's the 'Alcubierre Drive' and it's pretty watertight. Or the Emdrive. It manages to break the laws of physics by using microwaves to propel itself without any fuel whatsoever. (do some thorough research on these topics before criticising my use of them) If we suddenly discovered a practical way of putting it/them into use and start a massive galactic empire with it without mastering the planet and solar system first, would that make us a type 3 or would we still be type 1? that was my question that you failed to disprove by nitpicking bits of my question and avoiding the point entirely.

And the Alcubierre Drive (ignoring the fact that we don't know if it's actually possible) wouldn't be breaking the laws of physics (that's what make them laws), it would only be manipulating them in a very complex manner using methods that we do not fully yet comprehend. And to answer your original question the answer is simply no, you can't just discover a civilization 3 type of space travel without going through a civilization 2 type of phase, the same way no child can learn to walk without crawling first.

With Maastricht treaty in 92, we had a flag anthem and other stuff. However the freemarket and free circulation precedes that. Schengen Agreement was done in 85. actually y2k was very real from a technical standpoint. The only reason it was a non-event is because so many developers put the effort in beforehand to correct the technical issues with 4 digit years..looking back it already seems incredibly silly, but such is the exponential nature of technological progress.

It's interesting how so many programmers in the 80s and 90s assumed their software wouldn't still be in use in 2000, which is what created that problem in the first place. My Windows 95 PC at the time flipped to 2000 without an issue, but some of the legacy Windows apps that came with Windows 95 showed the date as 1/1/100. In 2001, it was 1/1/101.

At ►04:05 minutes onwards, it's interesting to hear Kaku say how far these scientists actually are willing to go in the name of this science: "because the transition from type 0 to type 1, is the most dangerous of all transitions, we may not make it." - It may well be that all of these civilizations that did not make this transition from type 0 to type 1 and self-destruct as Kaku is explaining, simply did so, not because of any enemies against it, but because of very gone wrong scientific experiments... I rest my case.

The only fact that I heard him say is that we have not observed even one type one: we have no, zero, none, nada evidence of a type one anywhere. So how do we know type one is nothing more than just our imagination, or pure fantasy? Maybe we left the highest form of civilization when we started building big cities, and ushering in high technology--T.V., telephones, etc. Sure, they make our lives easier in many different ways, but have they made our lives better? Kids today don't even know how to hold a normal conversation with other people. Honestly, I think that "entertainment' is our biggest downfall, and nothing is pushed more with those technologies.
