Instead of beefing up penalties for elder abuse, which is a grossly under-reported crime as stated here, let's instead do two things: 1. For independent individuals such as Mr. Rooney, Make Power of Attorney extremely difficult to acquire. Require outside shrinks to confirm that the person really wants to transfer his decision-making rights. 2. To better protect those who live in "retirement living facilities" let's adopt much more stringent hiring practices. Let's Switch the hiring mood from "Are you willing to work here?" to "Show me why you're good enough to work here." The lesson Mr. Rooney told us all: We Americans do a bad job at protecting and caring for our community elders, no matter how much we sentimentally treasure them.

Ms. Sparrow This serious problem is LARGER then most know. Many older people don't want to throw others, ESPECIALLY THEIR CHILDRENl under the bus ! Seems they are still loyal to a fault ! Those committing abuse use this emotional factor against the elderly all the time ! ! Yet, there are STILL great PEOPLE & FAMILY that would NEVER dream of committing elderly abuse ! i SALUTE them ! !

I unfriended a man I’ve known since high school about 10 months ago (for so many reasons) and I’ve been thinking a lot about his mother who is in her 90s because this ex-friend yells at her so bad that his face is red for about 25 minutes afterwards. She’ll give him money to buy her certain foods like cottage cheese but he refuses to buy a $1.59 container claiming it’s too expensive. He took her disabled parking placard from her car and uses it in his SUV for himself. The list goes on and on. After watching this video I’m finally going to find out who to call because this man not only abuses his elderly mother verbally but he also he neglects her as well.

Irish Eyes What a tragic story. I have love this man for years and years. My mom kept all his early movies and he was such a joy to watch. I guess this akin to spousal abuse, which my mom went through with my dad. The isolation, not able to have friends, what a life. What the hell is this country turning into? EL CRAPO!!!!
@tarnsand4404 жыл бұрын
Yes it mentions the son here but not his wife. However Mickey said the abuse started with his wife and the son joined in trying to portray him as senile. Then after he passed..she tried to make money off him from interviews selling memorabilia. I remember an interview he did with Robert Osbourne where he detailed the abuse so he was far from senile. It was systematic and calculated. I hope both step son last wife got nothing when he passed.

I have no forgiveness for her nor do I care about her anymore. My only hope is someone does the same thing to her. I spent my life as a mother taking care of her and protecting her. Now I wish I'd never given someone life who has no regard for mine. This is so sad. I adored and loved Mickey Rooney.

Died essentially penniless after a lifetime earnings of hundreds of millions - sure he drank, gambled, womanized and was deprived of a normal childhood by the studio system that made slaves of even child-actors...The abuses by wives, family, staff and hangers-on is a symptom of the greed and narcissism that pervades unchecked in a very, very sick society we tend to give ourselves far too much credit for having evolved...Elder abuse? Abuse to the elderly has been going on for decades. I was a Nurse Aide in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s. Nothing new, a common place, even when my parents went into the system within the last 10 years, nothing has changed. I had to monitor my parents affairs DAILY, and still was abuse. I to this day feel guilt that they had to experience this. My parents where both World War Two veterans. It took the government 1 1/2 years before my father recieved his veterans benefits. His doctor said that is common, they wait as long as they can so they will die and not collect. The money finally came but, half what they said. Upon his death Medicaid wanted to take it all. So, the government is no better. Trust no facility if anyone ever has to experience this!

that is so sad , I know my grandma was treated badly and ended up in hospital for being under weight and the family thought she was on death door . she is better now , she is 96 years old and for years i was always worrying . the family or anyone else was not allowed to see her as her care giver took her house and put in their name , and what does her daughter do but put her in an old folks home and lets her care giver keep the house and her money . And this makes me very upset with them , as they say they only care about her well being well this is fucked up because she lost everything and the abuser gets all . and they do not want to cause trouble so they will not be charged how fucked up is that .

Every family that has a parent in a nursing home or have nursing staff that comes to your parents home needs to have a camera installed in the bedroom and bathroom of the house .as a nurses aide if seen some aides be very ruff with patients ,some on purpose some just lazy . The family has to stay on top of what is going on with their parent. If they have dementia and are unable to speak you can see with cameras how they are being treated.

You should be able to do little things yourself. Be willing to adapt to changing circumstances. Downsize your accommodation if need be (so you pay less for maintenance) and pay someone to do the cleaning as often as you need. Everything else you can do yourself. It’s not so bad. These elderly people are suffering because they feel they expect other people to fulfill their every need; physical and emotional. It’s too much to ask of any human being in the world and puts the elderly person at risk of potential abuse - physical and emotional.

My grandfather was in his 80's and still cycling on his bicycle. One afternoon he was cycling home and some teenagers decided to harrass / bully my grandfather. My grandfather is a Scots, moved to New Zealand in the 50's. Let's say my scottish grandfather may have been physically elderly but boy did he still have that loud scottish swearing!!! He scared the shit out of the arsehole teenagers and they scarpered. I was very proud of my grandfather when I heard that. He yelled to the effect "JESUSSSSSSSSSSS CHRRRRRRRRRRRRRIST!" He still had some fire in his belly and had a spine. I think I take after my grandfather because I don't let anyone try and harass me etc and will instantly let them know. Being old you still have to have a spine and a sense of who you are and stand up for yourself and go out blazing. My grandfather could have been attacked and he would have not gone down quietly, he took that chance and his loud scottish bark was enough to scare the hell out of those little cowards.

I knew the minute I heard this that we would never hear from him again. That his new guardians would drug him, isolate him, until his money was gone. And that’s exactly what hAppened. He testified in front of congress and then his daughters did not get to see him again They learned he was dead after the funeral. While Chris and Jan were not able to gracefully care for him in his advancing age, you can see he is fairly healthy and sounds articulate and has money. After this he died without seeing his daughters and was silent and penniless. While most families have a difficult and messy time handling advancing dementia, the last guardians are often the ultimate abusers, robbing the elder of their life of the past many decades, isolLating them., controlling them with heavy sedation, and using up all their money or worse yet keeping the elder isolated in place while saving the money for the guardian to inherit. This day was just the beginning of a new kind of bad situation for Mickey. Look for the interview with his daughter Kelly and hear her talk about what happened next. How she never saw him again and was not allowed at the funeral. I bet his wife of 37 years and son Chris were not there either. After they were his loved ones for 37 years they were not able to transition through a difficult person with advancing dementia. That’s why I wrote to President Trump and asked him to allow anyone who has not seen their friend or loved one in a month to be able to go to the National Guard and get two uniformed guardsman to accompany them to a visit with the isolated person. The person will be safe from the “abuser” and the “guardian”.

I think you are right. I had a women 86 years old volunteering at the Elderly Nutrition Center. She would come at 10:30 am to set up and leave at 12:30. So, her daughter's husband, a drunk, said he didn't need her around. Made the lady very heartbroken 💔. So, when she was getting ready to move, she fell and broke her hip. She ended up in the hospital for a month. Still in the process of finding a new place to live. We at the Elderly Nutrition tried to be compassionate. She passed away three months later. The family came to the Elderly Nutrition and acted like it was our fault she passed away. They would take no accountability of their actions or lack of love toward the lady.

In the 90s Mickey was in a play at the stage west hotel and that's where I met him. I was working there as a Sous Chef and had many talks with him. The one thing I didn't understand was why one of his sons was always with him. I found it odd that he was treated like a puppet but he didn't seem to mind always being with someone. I am a victim of child abuse and the only thing positive about what I went through was my stepfather would just beat my sister and I up and thank God nothing sexual. If that would have happened I know I would have killed my stepfather. What a wonderful man Mickey was and in my line of work I have met so many stars but nothing like Mickey Rooney. I was totally star struck and even now I feel loss with his death not too long ago. No matter what anyone would or will ever say, Mickey Rooney was a real class act and I pray he is in peace now.

How dare anyone treat a person like that. I am utterly disgusted! Good on Mickey for standing up for himself. It takes a lot of strength to do that. My heart hurts thinking that anyone would endure such abuse. I hope Karma does get these abusers in a big, bad way.

Human beings are such opportunists whether it be in a positive way or negative way it’s so sad to see abuse like this even occur to anyone let alone an American icon like Mikey Rooney I would really love to hear more in regards to the follow up to his testimony before Congress and to see if charges where brought against his stepson I sure hope so

Just a reminder that there is an agency of the government called Adult Protective Services. If you see something, say something.

I so hope that Mickey got out of that abusive situation and that his stepson was punished.

I believe him 100%. The elderly abuse in this country is out of control. People who abuse the elderly should be imprisoned for life.
