John Bunyan apparently wrote Pilgrim’s Progress while in prison or after serving in prison, so the opening scene is a giant Pilgrim’s Progress reference. You lost the NPC because Pliant gave up at the first difficulty in the book. The caged man represents a reprobate, someone who has hardened his heart so that he cannot repent of sin, yet he feels despair and loss as a former professor of Christ. Bunyan was a Calvinist and his theology reflects in that character. Apollyon is the Son of the Devil. That part didn’t make sense because I thought Christian had lost his burden of sin by that point of the book and it looked like you still had yours. Maybe you missed a section where you actually get saved when you skipped that intended path? In the book the sin burden is a great heavy sack permanently attached to Christian’s back, so the game is symbolically representing it as the curse your character has. Ironic that you skipped since there’s a chapter of the book where two idiots tried to climb the wall and skip the journey, only to be rejected at the gates of heaven.

The fact that you've identified the "wise man" as Jordam peterson just goes out to show the literary genius of John Bunyan, becasue he was criticizing the archetype of the Peterson types (they sell wisdom but not salvation, wisdom without grace is null, etc.)

By some supremely strange coincidence, I chose today to research a bunch of religious names I’d heard in various media but didn’t know the origin for, and in that research I came across multiple references to Pilgrim’s Promise. Then I log into KZbin and find this in my subscriptions. Weird. For the record, Appolyon is the name of a figure in Judeo-Christian lore that is sometimes an angel, sometimes a demon, sometimes a place. It’s confusing. More commonly known as Abaddon.
@DBswag_ Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the brief lesson, it was very interesting. I just looked up Abaddon (on Wikipedia) & it appears to mean 'destruction' or 'doom' in Hebrew & the Greek equivalent is Apollyon which means 'destroyer'. There's also mention of a place called Sheol which appears to be an early interpretation of Hell based on the Greek version of the underworld, Hades. At first it seemed that Sheol was a place for all dead but later it was referred to as a place specifically for the "wicked" & thought of as a place of punishement. I also find it interesting that there is mention of people being summoned from Sheol, much like Daedra can be summoned from Oblivion, although this was considered a forbidden ritual. An example of this ritual was performed by a woman known as the Witch of Endor in the First Book of Samuel. Saul the King of Israel had attempted to commune with God on a number of occassions to find out how he should deal with the Philistine army which his own army was due to battle in the coming days. He had previously banned the use of sorcery & necromancy but decided to seek out a Witch to commune with a dead Prophet name Samuel. He eventually came across a Witch in the village of Endor & asked her to summon the soul in question, which she initially refused as she was afraid of being punished by the King however she later agreed after Saul gave her his word that she would not be punished. The Witch then summons Samuel who is not too happy to have his eternal slumber disturbed. He then tells the Witch that Saul should've trusted in God & now his army will be defeated as well as Saul & his sons will be "With me" tomorrow. Saul then collapses in terror & the Witch makes him a nice meal to make him feel better, ah how nice. Then everyone dies, the end. Just kidding. The following day the Israelite army is defeated by the Philistines & Saul commits suicide by falling on his Sword. Not really a happy ending by an ending indeed. I do find much of the Bible's stories & parables to be fascinating, despite not being religious myself. Most of them are really dark too, like believe & trust in God or die! Stuff like that. Pretty metal if you ask me.

Pilgrim's Progress was strangely one of the first adult books I read when I was a kid. My parents tried to warn me that it was too advanced, but I determined having already devoured the Narnia series. I actually DID read and finish it somehow. It helps that I had read the King James Bible for church, so you really kind of have to put your brain in that frame of mind (sort of like how you read Shakespeare). I liked the book a lot, though I can't say I got all the allegory until I was older. I was just into the adventure. ... AND yes, I have that Marvel Comic adaptation... still. I read that over and over to the point that it's sort of falling apart. BUT yeah, it was one of my favorite early book reads.

As a fairly devout Catholic I have to say this sort of mod doesn't really work well glued into a world like Tamriel. It could work if it was approached another way. 'The Pilgrim's Progress' is a fabulous book although fellow Catholics may find some bits...problematic as it reflects the arguments between Catholics and Protestants which were current to the era it was written. But this is so earnest it is painful if funny. A much better use of religion in a game is Joshua Graham in Fallout: New Vegas.

4:58 I don't know if you realise it (it sounds like you're referencing the rap lyrics though I could be missing the joke entirely) but that phrase literally _does_ come from "Pilgrim's Progress" - just much further into the book. The story including the names and places are entirely allegorical and it is a moral book rather than a proselytizing one - it's honestly one of the most important and character-forming stories for young children along with Aesop's fables and Grimm's fairy tales, and is far more nuanced than actual Bible stories. Whether you are remotely religious, regardless of creed, you should really give the book a read, it's not very long. Though I walk through the Valley of the Shadow of Death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.

Who is Apollyon in Revelation? In Revelation 9:11 we learn about another high-ranking fallen angel. He is called Abaddon in Hebrew, literally meaning "destruction" and Apollyon in Greek, literally meaning "one who destroys." Both names can be summarized as meaning destroyer. He is "the angel of the bottomless pit" and is king of the demonic locusts.

So I’m a Christian but I swear to god Christians try waayyy too hard to be cool. I mean this mod, Christian rap, Bibleman (a personal favorite example of Christian cringe). The only thing that is pretty dope is Veggie Tales.

i want a skyrim mod where at the beginning you dont go to the chopping block, but instead you are crucified right next to Ulfric Stormcloak and the other blond dude the end Then Ulfric resurrects after 3 days, takes you dont the cross and says: Wake up Prisoner, we've got a Province to Burn And then Stormcloaks all around Skyrim Im not implying anything with this paralel....
@Nick-qf7vt Жыл бұрын
Of course it would be the Thalmor that crucified him, and then spread lies about him not being resurrected. I'm not implying anything with this parallel.
