I used to do that, when I was in the Navy and had a really stressful day, I would grab a small hook and spool of thread and it helped me to calm down. It's hard to crochet something that small when you are angry.

I’ve been crocheting for 50 years, always in the finest threads. I’m also a dollhouse miniaturist (1:12 scale) and recommend using either cotton or silk threads, as we do need the drape in what we make in miniature.

Try a set of magnifying lenses. You wear them like a visor. Most come with a light and multiple lenses that are amazing to use.

Will you look at that! I used crochet hooks of that size to embroider handkerchiefs with crochet lace - a very long time ago-, I still have all of the hooks I used 40 years ago, because I'm kind of a hoarder with crafting tools. The smallest size I ever used was 0.6mm, that was perfect for lace. But I never thought to use them for granny squares! Very cute! This I have to try, I just bought a neck lamp for knitting, that will come in handy for this.

Your camera is very sharp and clear. Most people when they try to crochet in front of us it gets very fuzzy so congratulations on such a great clear picture. I have bad eyesight so I have started sticking my iPhone in front of my shirt with the flashlight on. Only thing different I do is going over only 1 thread & I go over the other 1 on the other side so it’s not so thick. Probably because I’m 70 & a perfectionist. I like your work. It’s been a while & you’re giving me the desire to get back to it. Thank you.

So many people make "magic rings" look so complicated. Just start with a loop like you would any other time you start a chain, but instead of pulling the first loop tight around your hook, just leave it more open. Just keep working your stitches in that loop for the first round, then pull the tail tight. That's all you really need to do.

This is just the easiest method I've found that allows me to get nice tight stitches, so I thought it worth sharing. I use your method with regular yarn but I've found working with thread is too fiddly to just work into a loop. Everyone is welcome to research their own methods though and find what suits them most 😊

Re: alternative threads. You might have better luck finding it online than in person but i find that tatting thread works well for micro crochet and does come as thin as sewing thread. The kind i like and that is fairly popular with tatting is by a company called Lizbeth. Its mercerized cotton so no fluff, has good sheen, is very durable and holds up well. Aunt Lydias crochet thread is a good one to look out for. Also Mercerized cotton is almost on par with synthetics when it comes to durability and ive gotta say having used sythetics vs cotton i really prefer cotton for crocheting tiny things

I'm not great at crochet but have been able to do it since school, us Boomers didn't get a choice, boys did wood and metalwork and technical drawing and girls had to do home economics (cooking etc.) and needle work, sewing, knitting and everything related to that like embroidery and crochet. So its something I do while watching KZbin and as I am into miniatures I started getting smaller hooks and using embroidery floss to make things for dioramas etc. I will basically crochet anything, as I find it really relaxing but definitely prefer small things although my eyesight isn't quite up to doing 1/12th scale cushions, thats just beyond my ability. I am going to follow this as I always have thread of various types in the house and I think I have the small needles somewhere.

When I didn't have any yarn there was a poncho made by Bag-O-Day Crochet that I really really really wanted to make (and wear and make for others) And, I DID HAVE some crochet thread so I proceeded to make a few of her designs using thread. That is really really cute, I’ve often wondered about crocheting with fine thread like that. I would definitely try to weave in that last thread with a needle though, you’d be surprised what you can manage to thread into fine needles, I’m sure that thread would go into a fine needle

I love this . I think your work and program is wonderful. I am fiber artist and so also spin and thought what a great venue for silk . But if you don't spin you could likely use silk thread . I think it would be a mush better alternative for your time skill and effort if you are selling these charming things to get a better return . The type of fiber used commands great differences in outcomes and return. Many of the places that sell luxury yarns sometimes sell cobweb silk that would work. Colormart in UK also has cobweb weight in cashmere and silk for a little more luxury . Knit picks has a lace weight 2 ply silk yarn that you might separate into sicles (crochet will correct the slight imbalance of a spun single yarn ) but probably the best place to acquire pure silk for this purpose, is from Treenway Silk, that specialize in different silk threads, fiber or yarns and ribbons. I see they have a 4 pack of silk thread for fine cross stitch that would be perfect and looks about the same weight as your polyester but would lend itself to this art form much better than synthetic. So do give it a try . Make sure you don't get silk noil though as it doesn't have sheen. You want either glorious reeled silk or beautiful spun silk. Both have sheen but reeled has the most sheen.

I'm not sure if someone has already mentioned it (with over 350 comments on here already it would take a while to read them all) so please forgive me is somebody has already mentioned this. For the 2nd round onwards you might like to try starting with a "standing" double crochet (or the "standing" version of whatever stitch you are using in any other patterns that have you change colours). You get a "real" stitch for every stitch (no chains that are used in place of the first stitch) which looks great and functions just like all the other stitches. As a bonus is it is also easier to work over the starting tail against the same colour rather than the colour of the row/round below it. When I use this technique in granny squares I make the standing dc the middle one of a group of three as I get a nicer join at the end of a round when I join a dc to a dc rather than the corner chains to a dc. The technique has been around for quite a long time now but not many people know about it. Your vids get a lot of views so if you try it and decide you like it perhaps you can do a video about it, or incorporate it in other videos? :-)

I got my hands on some old darning thread. It had 3 strands together, which I separated. This thread was amazing for micro crochet. It is durable, tolerated rework well and took well to the tight stitches: I've found that polyester does not curve around the tiny hook the way I like.

I got the metal only hooks in my set but wanted a grip. I found that wrapping a rubber band round and round it was a great solution just for trying this out.

Have you looked into tatting thread? It goes down to size 80 and comes in a lot of variegated colorways. There's also cotton quilting thread. Which is a little bigger then a duel duty.

Just ordered a 0.75 clover hook and some top stitch thread! Bc sizing down gradually is not the way I do things!
