I really like this type of content. You can also included a game at the end (preferbly off stream) where you're explaining your thought patterns and the different choices you make and what you base your final decision on, so to give most people an easier time to understand how this is all applied in practice! :)

Emir Bilgili LOL didnt notice the similarity but no, not quite, Kripp just takes a random game he found interesting and talks about it a little bit. Reynad was talking specifically about this deck and how it should be/he plays it. The difference in depth is huge since the point of it is for Reynad to in-depth explain decisions he makes in game in order to teach the viewer and make them understand. Kripp usually just says how powerful or RNG something is! xD See it as a kind of a guide, now Kripp sure as hell doesn't do guides! xD

I am not surprised he has all that salt considering he comes from an MTG background. There chance cards and random effects where lost a long time ago. Everything is mainly under your control so skill is really important. Which makes people frustrated more by top decks and also makes them more competitive. Of course there are several exceptions, like commander players and casual players.

ODDnanref I used to play M:tG and I don't mind randomness of Hearthstone at all. In fact, I'd say it was a lot worse in Magic (mana screw was by far the most frustrating in the game). We need people like you on the Blizzard design team. Right now, Blizzard is focusing only on players that enjoy Hearthstone as a casual game. While this is completely fine, there needs to be some sort of balance, just as they did with WoW. In WoW, you can still hardcore PvE while casuals players still get their taste of PvE that they're satisfied with. This should be so in Hearthstone as well. Blizzard has been focusing so much on the casual "fun" side of Hearthstone that they're completely ignoring players like Reynad and myself who would enjoy a more complex decision making game. #ReynadForHearthstoneDesign

The sad truth about capitalism is that the developers will always aim to maximize their income. Blizzard is a huge company and will try to aim for casuals since they are simply the biggest crowd in gaming. Starcraft 2 died mainly because the game was too difficult for the average player. I think they are trying to do the opposite tactic this time and making the game really simple and it seems like it was a successfull move atleast in terms of bussines. There are other companies that aim for the more experience crowd but they usually dont have as much resources and cant provide as good of a system, graphic and animations like Blizzard. If the game gets too complex the majority of the crowd will leave and thus will result in less revenue.
@Midgar888 жыл бұрын

Since spell will always give you a choice of three class cards, which are almost always better than neutral cards, spells are the better bet.

No spell is picked more often because raven idol is used in Yogg or spell/token based decks. If it's run in a minion/board based deck, it's much more reliable to just include better minions as opposed to raven idol.

Diverse because patron shit on all the aggro decks. Since patron was so common, aggro decks were played a lot less, and anyone decent at hearthstone knows that aggro/fast decks are mostly what hold a lot of interesting decks down. With less aggro, more interesting decks started to come out of the woodwork and created a more diverse meta. That's why after patron got nerfed, the meta became super stale again.

That's why MTGO has a match/game time limit instead of a time limit per turn. This means you have time on the turns where you need it, but still have a constraint to work under. Granted, you can multi-queue in MTGO and play multiple games at once, so people AFKing is less of an issue.

What magic has and HS does not is a logical balanced combat system. In Magic minion has summon sickness and the defending picks battle, while HS has summon sickness but attacker picks battles. @alfrederdogan55328 жыл бұрын
Agreed, Miracle rogue as well. A lot of shit can go down when you play auctioneer.
@KP-by4eu8 жыл бұрын
No offense miracle rogue is nothing compared to freeze/mill rogue. It'd be at 4-5 in terms of difficult 1-10. But even mill is not too complex. I find mill rogue is only difficult against aggro/early game decks, in which case you're so heavily unfavored that even if you didn't make any mistakes, you'd probably still lose anyways. Against midrange and ofc control decks, mill rogue is like a walk in the park.
@ARaider5108 жыл бұрын
Lol you make it sound as if freeze mage were the hardest thing to play. Playing regular ass control warrior takes more thought then freeze mage. The only deck that has come out of HS that took any brain to do, at least correctly, was Patron Warrior.
@KP-by4eu8 жыл бұрын
You clearly have played neither well. Control warrior is not that much harder than any midrange decks in the past(combo druid, muster pally, ...) In fact, control warrior has only 1 objective. single removal or brawl when you've given up and stall until late game. In midrange, at least you have to realize when to push for damage and when to push for board. Freeze mage on the other hand requires thinking at least 2 turns ahead and constantly deciding whether or not to AOE clear or hold. To say CW is more difficult than freeze shows you know nothing. And ofc everyone knows patron was the hardest deck.
@ARaider5108 жыл бұрын
+Khoi Pham lol are you kidding me? First of all, I said no decks were hard to play. Second of all, CW is much more then just single removal and brawl when you've given up. Let me just put you in your place real quick... You can fill you're head up with whatever made up difficulties you have to playing FM but it's not real. When you play FM you play to the cards in your hand. You play with the knowledge of what deck you're playing against and what they're typical next play is. It's literally that easy. It's not a hard deck to play just because you lose to decks that are bad match ups. It's a hard deck to play when literally even the slightest missplay or missuse can mean the difference between winning and losing. Playing Miracle Rogue, you have to play with cards that aren't in your hand. If going for the FoK just for cycle is worth it. If the burst in hand is enough to go for a 2 or even 3 turn kill. Lastly, CW is ONE OF the hardest to play well. If you had just watched the video, you'd know how much thought goes into every turn and how much you have to micromanage almost every card and even more so in mirror matches. Playing CW well is knowing when the precise moment brawling will break your opponent. Knowing if that execute is okay to use on an Azure Drake because you know you can deal with a bigger threat later on or if you hold it for a bigger threat. Warrior has 3 direct removals. Brawl, Execute and Shield Slam. It hold a different purpose Vs every archetype it plays against and misusing just those could mean a world of difference. Just because the little forums you go to want to say how hard a deck is to pilot doesn't make it true. There are only maybe 2 or 3 decks that are actually "hard" to pilot with the rest being mostly easy. But go on, continue believing your dear Freeze Mage is hard to play because you lose to "brain dead" Control Warriors at rank 12.

The answer to this is very simple, hearthstone decks have only 30 cards so the micro-interactions have to be kept to the smallest amount as possible, articulated micro-interactions have sense when there are a lot of cards in the deck so that they may become efficient in the long term as well, as long as hearthstone will be a 30 card deck system this will continue to exist

I think the most important point is what it feels like to lose. I have lost too many times to Rag Roulette, or Barnes pulling a high-impact card on turn three, or just drawing a deck in reverse. But every time I lose where I see obvious mistakes I made that might have turned things around, it stings a little less. It allows you to say "well, I have control over this. I can be smarter next time, and that won't happen." You feel like you're learning, getting better.
@stev0198 жыл бұрын
I like your idea of including more micro. After playing control long enough, the macro gets a lot easier and the decks all start to feel the same a bit. I gotta say that the decks like miracle rogue, murloc paladin, and otk warrior (either your variant you made or the worgen variant) all have this really interesting mish mash of having to consider micro and macro at the same time. One of the most fun matches I've had in months was murloc pally vs that otk arcane giant deck you made. I lost because of fatigue but it was an absolutely stellar game.

One aspect that people often don't think about is charge. Charge (haste) works well in games like MTG cause you decide if you take the damage. Either you take it cause you don't have minions OR you can CHOOSE to block it if needed. Without the chance to assign blockers and adding the randomness of drawing/using a taunt makes charge undercosted. MTG also got it right with how they make categories. Making everything played count as spells makes a lot more sense. The difference is the function and how long it sticks around. Would make it a lot easier to balance out control aspects rather than vague removal and shit secrets that can't be designed well due to this. It's gotten to a point in HS where the better player has a harder time winning by using knowledge because availability and unequal equality is in focus. HS, as of right now, are punishing good and skilled players for making a deck that reflects this knowledge by constantly reminding us that the game is not about being reactive anymore. Reactive gameplay (yeah - priest) is often what shows the better player, but also becomes frustrating for the casuals. Hence why they pushed active gameplay. Not interactive. The clusterfuck we have now is not interactive. Interactive would let both styles exist and let it be up to the better player.
@DieEnteable8 жыл бұрын
Good thinking, I agree. It's also easier to put complex cards into HS without being off-putting for casuals because the game engine auto-resolves the turns with no rule checking or whatever beeing needed. One thing I hated about Yu Gi Oh (played online on DuelingNetwork a few years back where you had to manually resolve turns) was that I had to read what felt like pages and pages of card text to understand what my opponent's cards where even doing, the turns took forever and there where 100 different actions within the first few turns, so I stopped playing. Because hearthstone doesn't have any instant speed cards (or trap cards or whatever), you can just sit back and relax and wait for your opponent to finish and then act accordingly to the final board state when it switches over to your turn.
@Sammysapphira8 жыл бұрын
There's a program called YugiohPro and it automatically sequences the game mechanics, if you still care about YGO at all. It's what let me get into the game because I agree playing Dueling Network was overwhelming when I had to sit there for 5 minutes asking my opponent what they were doing.

This is one of the biggest differences between Magic and Hearthstone and I agree it's an area Hearthstone could do a little more in. We don't need anything as complicated as Brainstorm, a card that often gives you over 50 different options for how to resolve it, but just adding more cards that give you 3, 4 or more options, or even any options and more subtle synergies that are powerful. Because every card that gives you a choice means good players win more often, and this can be done without pushing the less experienced out. Discover is a great example of this, you don't have to be a genius to play with discover but a better player will get more out of discover than a weaker one.

I suggest more minion placement mechanics! That would easily explore more micro decisions in a way that would be intuitive and unique to hearthstone!

A little off topic here, but I think tracking is probably a better card overall for hearthstone, because the lack of shuffle effects just makes it feel like you lock yourself out of the game with ponder/brainstorm effects, which can give you the feel bads when you are being killed. Also, sequencing matters more just because your opponent can interact with your side of the board more mana efficently and at anytime they have mana left. Removal in magic is miles more efficent then hs, and instants make everything complicated. Sorry if this was worded poorly, but I'm not a great writer

Please please keep making more videos like this, I love hearing more pro thoughts on the design of the game. I feel like so many players are uninterested in actually critiquing the game, maybe because they are worried about being seen as too complainy, but it's so interesting to hear.

The basic rules of Hearthstone prevent some of the more delicate decisions: There isn't targeted discard. (It is important for control or combo match ups to help set up your game plan.) There isn't any controlled spells that can be cast on your opponent's turn. (Forcing an issue on your opponents turn is important. It opens up new possibilities on your next turn.) There are only three zones: deck, hand, and battlefield. Other games have several more. The randomness factor, which makes things more enjoyable casually, prevents more intelligent decision. As far as Magic is concern, there is a randomness base game: Mormir Basic. Costs about ten bucks and you can go HAM on the randomness. To explain, Mormir Basic works off another format, Vanguard, and Mormir is one of those vanguards. His ability lets you pay x mana and discard a card to get a random creature at that cmc. Considering there are 20+ years of magic, that is a ton of different creatures. Have fun!

There graveyard exists too. Only 2 cards interact with it, one of them is brand new, and both of them belong to an universally considered non-class... but it's there
@dyrnwynski8 жыл бұрын
N'zoth and Anyfin Can Happen also care about the "graveyard"
@isawadelapradera64908 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Blank True. I also forgot about doomcaller, stalagg, and feugen, even if their only interaction with the graveyard is only to check for a specific card. And I feel I am missing one or two more cards, through I can't quite put my finger on it.

Playing a number of CCGs before getting to Hearthstone, I think just about any use of "summon random" or "discover" can be replaced with "from this deck" to increase overall deckbuilding strategy/synergy. Having some that are totally random, such as Confessor Paletress, might add to the "fun" (Mario Party style) aspect while staying mostly balanced, but mostly it feels like a cop-out. The next step after that is that things like "damage/steal a random minion" would be more likely to occur on low cost than high cost minions, for instance, to make epic minions actually feel epic. A more D&D-style rolling stats-based system behind the scenes, instead of blandly uniform probability. (Mainly I'm just salty about how unrewarding Brawl is to play against with any sort of minion deck.)

The great irony of this video is it gives a macro idea, "more decisions", but the micro examples have no pattern. "Keep it simple" but "have more complexity in decisions" is obviously 100% the goal. But the TYPES of complexity is the key. Devil is in the details.

excellent and well verbalized thoughts. just having those high skill ceiling cards as an option and not even necessarily being something pushed to the front would be great. in addition I think it worth noting that beyond just the lack of cards with more open options, a lot of what influences how people play is that the primary node for determining how "good or bad" (ladder) a player is runs on a volume based return on investment system. There could be a fantastic deck comprised of those type of high thought cards that exist, it could be crazy fun to play that deck if you can grasp the concepts behind it, and it may be able to maintain a 60%+ win rate, but if it takes 2-3 times as long for those games to resolve without any addition benefit or reward for choosing the higher functioning path then the meta will always favor fast acting, low thought involvement, quick resolution decks just so that players can get more game cycles under their belt. A true tournament or weighted ranking system would be a fantastic option that would reward people the recognition and play style opportunities they crave.

Thats why I really loved playing the classic Patron Warrior, I will 100% admit the deck was OP as shit but it just felt so rewarding when you won with that deck and when you lost it made you think about how you lost and how you could have won if you played correctly.

1) TIL OP stands for opressive 2) I sucked with patron LUL 3) This needed to be said a thousand times over already thank you Noodle

This is why I miss warsong patron warrior, and why I only enjoy combo-based decks. Playing minion-on-curve is very boring and mundane to me, however these boring decks are often the best. The old patron was hard to play, combo-oriented and was tier 1, which for the most part is healthy design
@coottius18308 жыл бұрын
Amen, brotha. My interest in Hearthstone definitely wanes when everything becomes predictable. Discover was such a nice addition and thankfully there's been a couple more in Karazhan actually.

Agree with this. I had the same experience with Worgen OTK before standard hit. It was fun and I felt rewarded if I managed to pull it of, mind you it was a lot harder back then because of Belcher meta and no OP Ghoul to clear things. Similarly I had a ton of fun playing Priest OTK with Shadowbombers (Brann and Youthful Brewmaster) and I didn't feel bad if I lost, because 95% of the time it was because I did the order of play wrong (acolyte, pyro, cleric shennanigans). There was a lot of decisions I had to do and it was a very complex deck to play , which is probably one of the reasons why people didn't play it. Also unlike other decks the win condition required me to have enough health myself if I wanted to win so decisions like do I save Flash Heal for healing myself or do I use it to kill that minion with Auchenai. Also, as a Priest it was not that easy to get my opponent down to 18 HP which is the amount of damage the combo that I used provided.

Next hearthstone expansion be like, "look we added a micro thinking card", 4 mana summon a 7/7 silence it then draw a card.
