“Ferrari vs. Chevy.” TV’s touting the LED acronym have always been tricking consumers. Caleb touched on this very briefly, but the only true LED’s used in TV’s has been as a backlight in transmissive sets. It’s always been an LCD set. The most important distinction between micro LED and any other form of LED tv is that micro LED panels are emissive, just like plasma and OLED. All of the “qled” and “mini” LED sets are just LCD panels - there’s a huge difference.

Micro LED is the first LED tech that can give OLED a run for it's money. LED TV's don't have burn in problems and if they can make each Micro LED have no bleed to other pixels then you basically have a tv that is capable of what OLED does without the worry for burn in. In reference to the section of the video about blu-ray players, if two players are both set to bit-stream audio, the signal received at the processor should be identical, no matter the quality of the player. I’m assuming it would be as is simply pulling raw data off the disc and sending it down the cable.

Hi Caleb, I love your You Asked videos and look forward to each new one. So many people have asked questions that i had also. I'm not sure if this question woukd be a good topic for one, but if not hopefully you can answer it. I see so many gorgeous 4K HDR/DV video clips you display when answering someone's question. I would like to download images like for demo material on my Sony OLED when showing it off, however it seems all i can find are videos on KZbin which won't display in HDR or DV. Can you suggest where to go, or even if their is a good demo 4K Blu-ray that would be great. Thanks, Gary

Caleb. I saw/read the article you guys posted about this new physical media disk and how much storage it can hold. My question is, what could this possibly mean for 4K blu-rays? Does this mean that a single disk can potentialy make the quality of one single movie better of the content that it holds, like 8K or even better? As someone who collects physical media still, hearing this news makes me excited but also still nervous about the future of physical media.

Hey Caleb and everyone reading this comment, maybe you can answer this question. I have a LG C1 OLED TV. I also have a Panasonic 4K UB 9000 4k Blu-ray player. This 4k player is known for its awesome tone mapping capabilities. I see for the HDR settings in the TV the tone mapping option is set to "ON" for HDR content, The UB9000 also has tone mapping as well which is turned "ON". My question is when watching HDR movies should both HDR tone mapping settings be turned "ON"? If so wouldn't they conflict with each other causing a not so accurate picture?
@Jojken
@Jojken 3 ай бұрын
Does not seem like a good idea to have both on. Both off must be better, but of course you should pick one of them. If you have a very old OLED use the blu-ray player tone mapping. If you have a newer OLED then the TV:s tone mapping might be better. If I were you I would test to see which one is best 🙂

But SDR was retrospectively defined as 100 nits. The fundamental difference between SDR and HDR - the raison d’être of HDR - is that SDR classically sends a signal to tell the screen what to do, whereas HDR tells the TV how bright an image was captured at (and implicitly gets displayed at, but but but but … the more you know, the less you know) Look: If you want a TV to display a CRT image from 1980 in all its glory, you have to begin with a powerful HDR panel and learn about EOTF and OETF or - simply - use a Sony TV in Sports mode, which emulates a classic video camera and video CRT. A lot of the recent history with HDR and cd/m2 or “nits” has its origins in computer CRTs, which were always wayyy dimmer than TVs.

I think what you said about brightness in HDR is just plain wrong! HDR mode doesn't mean the TV will automatically max out it's brightness/backlight (setting). The TVs I bought for family and myself (multiple Sonys & a Philips) go into HDR mode and are generally brighter than in SDR mode, yes, but there is still an option to adjust the brightness/backlight up (or down). Tone mapping is a different setting that can be adjusted independently. You even show that the brightness and contrast setting isn't maxed out on the Vizio in HDR at 4:00 and the contrast setting is usually the backlight. Another flawed point you made about Dolby Vision IQ assumes the tech works as advertised. I personally tried the mode and it *NEVER* maxes out the brightness of the TV even if you shine a big flashlight at the light sensor on the TV, which I did. I tried shining the same flashlight at my phone and it triggered outdoor/direct sunlight mode on it which unlocks a brightness boost on my phone so it's not an issue with the light source I used. Disabling auto brightness should *ALWAYS* be the first thing someone does on their TVs if they want to have the full range of capabilities. And Dolby Vision IQ should be avoided by all means necessary.

@@zelko0768 Oh yeah? Care to explain? True Micro LED is per pixel lit just like OLED. The only thing that holds back OLED is brightness levels which is something purposely toned down because OLED is Organic and thus has a burn in issue as each pixel individually dims based on the amount of energy it gives off. Even though they are adding better cooling to them and getting better at it eventually OLED will give way to per pixel lit LED. The burn in programs that run are effective but only because they are toning down the energy and thus brightness on parts of the screen that saw less energy through them which essentially lowers the brightness overall over time. I am an OLED person as both my TV and computer Monitor are OLED, but I will also follow the best tech over time and when Micro LED is good enough to surpass OLED then I will switch and not before. So for now I am all OLED but my options will always be open.

I wished you had shown the EXACT SAME picture duplicated on both sides. I believe you saw differences, but what you demonstrated with didn’t sell me. I can understand the difference in build quality, but that comes down to price. The PS5 costs one seventh as much as the Magnetar, so if the Magnetar doesn’t last SEVEN TIMES as long, the build quality argument doesn’t hold water. Interface IS vital, though, as you said. Oh no another discussion which adds confusion to TV architecture understanding which initially was caused by Samsung using LED in an LCD context. In reality there are TVs which emit light from the pixel (self emissive) or from the output of LCD filter in the pixel as that pixel receives light from behind the pixel in a backlight. OLED and microLED are self emissive with light control at the pixel, and all others are variants of LCD with different methods of backlighting. If a backlight was unique for each pixel and controllable with high dynamic range, then each pixels light output would be independently controlled. Sony’s new mini LED panel tech comes closer to independent control of the backlight for each pixel.

Well if we live in a digital world I would agree with you. But unfortunately our real life domain is analog hence the need to convert digital signals to analog (DAC). Now analog signals…..not 1s and 0s anymore

His content has to address the whole market, not just us plebs that can't and won't EVER drop that kind of money on a single component, or even on an entire A/V system.

Waste of money to buy a Blu-ray player with anything but bit stream outputs, perhaps one HDMI for A/V and one for audio only. Should use a separate receiver or processor to decode/convert audio bitstream to analog.

It’s both… The micrometre (Commonwealth English) as used by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures;[1] SI symbol: μm) or micrometer (American English), also commonly known by the non-SI term micron,[2] is a unit of length in the International System of Units (SI) equalling 1×10−6 metre (SI standard prefix "micro-" = 10−6); that is, one millionth of a metre (or one thousandth of a millimetre, 0.001 mm, or about 0.00004 inch).[1]

@@jolness1wait until you discover “mill” was borrowed by metric countries from imperial, but now means “millilitre” English language favours emphasis on the second syllable for 4-syllable words ending in “metre”, but no matter how pleasant it is to say milLIMmeter, cenTIMmeter, milLILeter, it’ll never catch on. Stuff like microns and mills wins. And don’t worry, because inches are defined as 25,400 microns now.
