If you suffer from anxiety, like I did, I suggest that you don't wait for further studies and research, and just go ahead and start fermenting milk kefir. That drink alone cured my life-long anxiety. I can spend days raving about kefir. It truly saved my life.

would you say that had any effect on depression as well ?

Could anyone suggest further work since this talk, has there been further clinical study with evidence about psychobiotics? I'd like to know of further clinical studies that Mr. Dinan wanted to see done since this talk 2 years ago. Thanks.

I am convinced that there is a whole layer of communication in the body aside from nerve cell to nerve cells and hormonal. Imagine discovering that there is a force moving thru the insulation only, of your home extension cord that governs how the electric tool basically operated? The majority of the nerve cell is made of connective tissue, >90%.. The human eye and ear can pick up and transmit information instantly thru the body via the fascia surrounding the eye or ear, i.e. cornea, ear drum, way before nerve transmission even begins. Possibly the vagus nerve relates via its nerve sheath and not the neurons themselves and manipulating the nerve sheaths, like the carotid sheath in the neck, can free up adhesions and aid this transmission.

SBS man Very interesting for you to pick up. Have you had firsthand experience related to this? I have, slowly toxins (metal, Strep p & staph a eventually...which of course invites pseudomonas). Felt something going wrong after dental procedures, but was so low level and not any pain involved, yet, just strange bothersome signs & symptoms including emotional sensations for no reason. Over decades got worse and worse, particularly dental procedures, pregnancies ( body becomes more vulnerable), etc. Doctors were never any help or of course typical suppressive drugs which just made it worse...Thirty years with sci-fi symptoms and signs even! Finally became my own doctor....wish I had done this so much sooner! People are given idiosyncratic "diagnosis" like Chronic Fatigue, which is just a group of SIGNS & SYMPTOMS, enough people have had that it gets a label! Depression with no reason such as abuse, etc., it is a warning sign the body is in trouble, something is invading andor deficient!

So, what to do now if you have to deal with a problem in gut flora with multiple consequences, including depression? If 99% probiotics don't work like it's stated, then what?

+Vladimir Gabrov Vladimir, try raw organic milk~~>homemade sauerkraut~~~>kefir~~>enema infusion of probiotics via coffee enemas. We are and indeed own all these bugs, so find and make your own cultures.

That is what you do? You drink milk, eat cabbage and make coffee enemas?

What you do is rely on yourself and your diet and treatments, and not the Medical doctors or institutions.

+Vladimir Gabrov Kefir is not simply milk. My 26 year old daughter, my 43 year old son and I all stopped having depression and quit anti-depressants cold turkey without noticing changes AFTER we ate gluten free for a year. Gluten is in wheat, rye and barley. We eventually had to quit dairy in order to heal our guts, but that is not necessary for everyone. We take probiotics, eat fermented foods, eat mostly grass-fed meat and organic foods, avoiding GMO foods and foods where pesticides are used. We are all very functional professional people with unseen autoimmune diseases. The human body needs its mitochondria fed daily, which is not junk food. Please look at Terry Wahls, MD on FB or on youtube under Food AS MEDICINE. For healthcare professionals, look for Functional Medicine Doctors. GrainBrain is a good book. Wheat Belly. These searches will lead you to other more recent books and information. Eating the Paleo diet may help you very much, as well as taking allergy tests. My doctor does testing to learn my gut flora and stool tests to make sure I no longer have Heliobacter Pylori, which my microbiota got so bad that I have not had a working memory for 8 or so years! Now I am going back to work as a lawyer. :) Best health to you, Vladimir. I am on Facebook if you wish to locate me.
