Thank you so much for your video. I though that I was the only one not "totally pain free" by day 8. I also appreciate the comment about those with chronic pain being used to working through the pain. I have a hard time not working away at my pc, sitting or standing, and realizing that I've been at it for over an hour. I hope that you continue to have a great recovery.

Had it on Friday. Day one was very painful of course. Day two was much better as I had no sciatica pain in my right leg. Today is day 4 and unfortunately I'm feeling some pain in my hamstring. I'm a bit disappointed but I know it's still very early in the recovery stage. So I will continue to be careful, take my meds, and be patient.
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
+Edward Goldson I'm glad you got through it safely, and try not to be too frightened of "ghost pain," which is what they called it for me. I no longer had sciatica like pre-surgery, but I had (and have during therapy) occasional ghost pain down the right leg, which is where I had the horrific sciatic pain prior to the operation. It was always short-lived as opposed to sustained pain like before. If that's what you're experiencing in your hamstring, I was told that was normal. Mine would last for a few seconds and then fade out. By week two of recovery, I wasn't having ghost pains anymore, but when I started PT, it came back a bit, and I was warned beforehand not to "freak out" - my surgeon's words, ha ha - if I had some ghost pain again. I sincerely hope you improve steadily and that this helps you get back to normalcy.

I'm glad your doing better. I know after my surgery I had tons of trouble moving my hips and having a flat sheet under the bum that wasn't tucked in helped cause I at least could slightly shift my hips without getting help. I was in the hospital for the first 4 days after my 2 level microdiscectomy with a coflex implant at both L3/4 and L4/5. It was hell, my abdomen was in more pain at first because of that horrid Wilson table. Then the following day it snowballed I ended up with huge bruises on my stomach. The pain meds helped alot for the surgical pain but not so much for the bruising. Anywho got off track you are doing great at only 2 weeks post-op keep doing whatever you're doing!

Best wishes on your continued recovery! I've been thinking of you and wondering how you've been feeling. Yes, exhaustion is par for the course unfortunately! I'm not surprised your Dr found the herniation to be bigger than expected. You can pretty much guarantee that the MRI shows far less than what really is going on. (I've experienced that with all 6 of my spine surgeries). I'm glad he was able to continue with the microdiscectomy and that he didn't need to fuse you despite how much bigger it was. Whew! Take it from someone who has suffered through this immensely for the last 13 yrs (and I'm only 43)...Be mindful of all activities you choose to do from here on out. You are at risk of needing a fusion, so live life a bit differently to preserve what you have. May your remaining recovery move quickly and painlessly! You are blessed!! ((Gentle Hugs))

Hi Amy! Not sure if you still check these posts? I too have had a similar recovery to you (30yrold mum of 2) and was expecting to be like all the other videos I saw. At 12dp operation I still can't do a mile walk quite yet, and my back kills afterwards. I had no back pain before, just sciatica pain so I really wasn't expecting this. I feel like I have this huge tugging/pulling sensation on one side of my spine with certain movements and after walking. My back is what really holds me back right now and i feel nowhere near going back to a semi normal life. As a mum when did you find you could participate in family life again properly? I have a six year old and 8 week old baby. Many thanks and sorry for such a long post x
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
+Jane Caroline Brennan I'm still working on that, and it's frustrating. Physical therapy...aggressive physical therapy that isn't much fun, is helping me get strong again. The surgery removed the herniation that was causing so much pain, but the inflammation and muscle weakness and posture problems from a decade-plus of pain avoidance and inability to stretch or be active properly have done their work. I am nearing the 12-week mark. I walked two miles with a friend today, and I was completely knackered at the end. It took a couple of hours to recover from the exertion, but it felt good. Last time I tried to walk more than a mile, I was in pain for a long time after the walk. So. I think the key difference is the strength and flexibility and posture work I've been doing in physical therapy. I am just now starting to be able to tidy up, pay attention and participate in short family functions where I can sit down or lean on something for support if I'm required to stand. Going to the store is absolute torture if I need to be there longer than 30 minutes. I still can't pick things up effectively or safely from the floor. BUT...progress is happening. It's just excruciatingly slow.

Thanks for the reply Amy. I'm lucky that I haven't had such an extended period of time with this problem but recovery is definitely slower than I expected. On week 3 now and I'm back on steroids to bring down inflammation and akdhoyvh I've upped my walking, by the end of the day I'm in pain with sciatic twinges, and lumbar burning. Glad to hear you're on the mend and that I'm not alone! X

I have been shocked at how non-chalantly they have treated my surgery. It was emergent not planned I couldn't walk so was taken to ER and they found the fracture removed the bone piece in my spine. They have acted like I should know what to do. PT told me to do stairs day 1 4 times a day. Then the office 3 days later said I was supposed to be resting. I have had nothing for pain or swelling or anything.... when I asked I was told go to your PCP. My appointment is next Monday. I have no idea what I am supposed to do. All I can do is sit on pillows in a recliner and ask for help to get to the bathroom and shower. I can't stand. I can't sit in a chair. I can't lay down in a bed. About a week or 2 post op I developed back spasms too which I had to go on Baclofen for. I slept in the recliner relatively upright at first and over the past month and half have gradually reclined it every couple of nights. Have finally managed to lie flat now for about 3 weeks. I hit the 3 month mark and suddenly seeing vast improvements. I can move a lot better, bend and twist ok, hold my 2 year old. I am coming off all the meds (gabapentin, baclofen, tramadol etc) everything done bit by bit as I had bad withdrawals from tramadol. I am one of the few who had to forego physio in exchange for regular walking because 3 days of physio put me back to barely being able to walk. Tried a few times but my body reacted so badly even when they gave me a more gentle version of the moves. Anyway, I now walk fine without a stick, can do housework (except hoovering), back at work etc. Hopefully be able to drive again soon. Tried the other day and don't think I'm quite comfortable enough yet. Even though some people are feeling great around 6-8 weeks I'd say that figure is more like 12-16 weeks.

This is the part that FREAKS me OUT!! Like, what does it feel like? How do they do it? What does it feel like when they put the stuff in, like do you get sleepy or is more like wide awake to instantly out? Could you have stayed awake if you would have tried or is it impossible? Haha. Basically whatever you remember about that part would be helpful. Thanks so much!
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
+xcalabur18 I didn't even know it was happening. I told the anesthesiologist, when she came by to speak to me before the surgery, that I was afraid of being put to sleep. She smiled and promised me she would make it easy. They did it without telling me so that I wouldn't panic. I felt nothing. I just fell asleep sitting up in my gurney bed. It must have been really fast because I didn't even notice getting sleepy or struggling. One minute, I was looking around at the surgical theatre. The next minute, I was waking up in recovery. They put me out before they moved me to the procedure table, so I experienced nothing scary at all. Definitely tell your people that you are nervous about being put to sleep, and they will help you. They may not do it the way mine did, but they will help you make it easier.

Thank you so much I know you know the pain and this is so helpful I can’t thank you enough🙏

I’m on week 2 and I’m with you I felt way worse than almost every video I’ve seen those first days after. Also I’m one room longer like yours. Also mentioned he had to take about 40% of the disc. Walking slightly better week 2 but hip pain kills me and have to lay down for awhile and repeat. Did you have any kind of knot around the area? Think I’ve heard it called a seroma?

I had L5/S1 exactly two weeks ago today, I also watched way to many videos and prepared for the worst,I also viewed those with little issues. Guessing I was lucky cause touch wood no issue at all,biggest thing for me was feeling sick after the general and that lasted a good two days,plus awful tummy for five days.I still have a numb foot but after seven years I guess now I have hopefully holted any further nerve damage. Sometimes I feel did I do the right thing?because again no pain issues, the Doc just said after the operatio "We moved some quite significant fragments " I dunno,either way do operation or not it's a road to travel, if not have done thus,it would have all returned again like the previous time I postponed the operation. Mmmm... life hey... good luck,love to chat with those similar to me,Whatsapp here or the like x x x

Ive been told its either cauda equina if I dont get surgery or if I do . Or death. Or covid. And I am a lone parent. I am in so much pain I have not a flipping clue how I am going to cope. Having a connective tissue disorder also means I can rip , tear , dissect or even being intubated could dislocate my neck and kill me . ........I cant decide what to do. @amynix26329 жыл бұрын
+Adam Spiller Yes! I just hit the four week mark and intend to do another update. I'm still stiff and have a lot of pain in the morning, but it is mostly muscle spasm. I'm walking up to a mile at a time, now. No pain killers needed, but I still take muscle relaxers. I will be starting physical therapy very soon...right after I have my next checkup with the surgeon.

Ok I am 25, I will be Having a Microdiscectomy coming up. Please share any and all tips and what to expect? I have two small Children and my mom will be coming out to take care of them.
@amynix26328 жыл бұрын
With your mom at home, you should be fine for aftercare. My recovery was worse than what a lot of people experience, and since you're still young, you should bounce back faster than I did, depending on how much/how big the operation is. Make sure you have some sturdy cushion-like pillows to help you get supported and comfortable in bed. Get a cane to help you around the first couple of days, just in case. Do NOT bend over to pick things up or attempt to lift your children until your surgeon clears you to do so. Let them count on grandmother for those things until you're cleared for that sort of activity again. Don't do it even once. You will likely be given high doses of pain killers for the first week or two post-surgery. Get a gentle laxative and use it so that you don't get constipated. No kidding. No one advised me about that, and it was actually frightening. Stool softeners may or may not be enough, so have a laxative on hand and if you haven't had normal bowel function by the end of the second day post-op...take one. I hope you have a good result. I certainly did. It's the best thing I've ever done for my back. Get into physical therapy as soon as you're cleared for it, and take every appointment covered by your insurance. It will help you heal faster, and you won't believe how quickly you get stronger. Best wishes.

How are you now?
@vidiupload41745 жыл бұрын
I've had serious difficulty with opioid constipation in the past, and I may be facing surgery similar to yours. You said that stool softeners were not effective. What did you have to do that actually worked?
@amynix26325 жыл бұрын
I took an overnight laxative once per day and drank a lot of fluids - more than I wanted to drink. It helped a lot. After having to use a liquid suppository on day three--which I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy--we started with the overnight laxative tablet once per day. Everything was fine after that.
@vidiupload41745 жыл бұрын
@@amynix2632 Thank you. If I have to take opioids in the future, I'll have a lot less apprehension about using them knowing that this common side effect can be overcome.

@@amynix2632 a few months ago I also passed back surgery in tow levels l5 s1 and l4 l5 discectomy but now my back is so weak when I walk 30 minutes it’s hard and painful so I don’t having good flexibility. What’s should I do as from your mind and experience. Do it’s go away in next month’s or not?
@amynix26322 жыл бұрын
@@hamedkhuram3705 I didn't reach full recovery strength for about 4-6 months. I had intense (2x/week) physical therapy following my surgery, but it took 4 solid months before the weakness was gone. I know exactly what you mean by the weakness. If you walk--just walk--every day on flat, safe surfaces, you should see improvement and have no radiating pain in the legs. My back hurt a LOT during recovery but the pain was different than before surgery. If you still have pain in your legs and bottom or if the pain in your back doesn't lessen after 4 months...and if you're not getting physical therapy...definitely tell your doctor. After about half a year, I could walk several 3 miles/5 kilometers without serious pain. I would get tired in my back, but not serious pain. Remember that you had your back muscles pulled back, holes drilled into bone, and nerves scraped and prodded. It's okay to give yourself time to recover. If you feel you are not improving, see your doctor and have them look at you again. I will pray for your recovery. My surgery did wonders for me. I hope you find good relief, as well.

How did you deal with going to the bathroom?
@amynix26324 жыл бұрын
I had help from my husband for the first few days to get from the bed to the bathroom, but I was able to get up and walk to the bathroom to take care of things. If they have you on loads and loads of painkillers, take a 24 hour laxative once per day. That's my advice. The stool softeners they give you might not be enough, & you do NOT want to deal with that in those first days of recovery. Ask me how I know. /nod

They had to go in and come up from the underside. 4 hours in the surgical room. I was in the hospital for 4 days. 15 weeks after and I'm doing great. The first 3 days I was in tears, just terrible. With dilauded 30mg oxycodone, nothing touched the pain. It feels like they made a 6 inch cut 4" deep and threw Hornets nest in the hole and taped it up, let the Hornets sting the F out of me. HORRIBLE pain.
