Does an e-m10 ii count as tiny? I love it though. I have been thinking about something even smaller but i have a hard time using the lcd's on my cameras in general. You seem to love using cameras without viewfinders. I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject of no viewfinder. Any tips?

@@theamateurbunch5006 fun little thing! I gave mine to my cousins girl who turns 8 yrs old this saturday! I gave my cousin her D7200 back in 2018 when I upgraded to 5mk ii. using D7000 for photography and an old trusty GH4 for video!

@@theamateurbunch5006 The E-M10 ii 📷 definitely counts, especially with the newest M43 cameras being large enough for the LCD to serve as a carrier flight deck! 😊 And, of course, it has a pop-up flash. 📸

@@ferdinandbardamu3945 Not in my opinion. Phones are still using tiny sensors which produce photos with very limited dynamic range. The better ones use some advanced computational tech to improve the image quality, and they are fine if you are only going to view them on a phone or social media page. A good friend claims his new iPhone takes "excellent" photos and sent me a sunset photo (nicely composed) as proof. Well, as soon as you enlarge it to 100% *all* the detail goes away and it looked like a watercolor painting. Having said all this, if a phone is all you have at the movement then it's the "best camera". But even these older, small, MFT cameras will take a variety of excellent lenses from primes to compact zooms which all give vastly better image quality than the simple lenses in smart phones. Again - shoot what you have.

@@ferdinandbardamu3945 I guess it's something everyone should answer to themselves. Personally, no. Even if we skip IQ. Unless you have a good phone and take your time to learn some more "manual" apps--with a phone you lose a lot of control over your image. So, carrying a small oly with 17mm lens or ricoh gr is well worth it (for me) in terms of control and ergonomics.

Loved this video. I also never wanted to carry my "work" camera (sorry S5) but I am definitely willing to chuck my EDC in a little hip pouch. It's exactly why I bought a GX85 and 20mm f1.7 for an EDC. I wanted both front and rear control dials and opted for IBIS so I can also grab snippets of everyday life and I also don't edit--just dump into a timeline and output weekly--much like having the old VHS cams back in the day. I find that I'm more intentional with unloading my memory card and picking the good pics to share. I wanted to fill my instagram feed with a specific portrait look that I can get with this combo for documenting my everyday family life to share with friends and family. I'm tired of just having iphone photos & videos that I never look back on!

My favorite tiny camera was the Olympus E-PM1. I used it every day coupled with the also tiny Panasonic 14mm F2.5 till the image stabilization has stopped working. I used it from 2012 till 2024, almost every day!!! Absolute great color and never bothered me her 12 Mpixels only!!! I also use the Panasonic GX800 another extraordinary great camera with manual lenses!! You should check the extraordinary clean image at high ISO, of course coupled with a good Raw convertor!!! A new Panasonic very affordable camera with a 25Mpixels sensor will be a great success, I think!!! But these are only my hopes, I am not 100% sure!! But keep promoting this standard for the benefit of the true photographers community!!!!

The quintessence of your philosophical discourse ist the reason how I found my way to your chancel. I started this year with shooting daily on my way with my cheap smartphone - remember the best camera is that you have with you. It works having a lot of good moments in the present moment and for improving my photographic view - but now it's time to find something practical above this crappy smartphone stuff.

This is such great advice - the everyday carry, not worrying about damage to expensive gear. I carry my Oly em5 mkiii plus 17mm f1.8 with me everyday. I have limited time for dedicated photography time - work plus 3 kids under 10. I often get off transit a bit early to walk and take photos and sometimes at lunch or the end of the day. I want to add that having a weekly or monthly photo project (like yours) is also so helpful to improving photography. I will look for the GF7 as it might be good for sneaking it into facilities that often don't allow cameras. Thanks!

As I am a visual artist and painter as well as a photographer I am always observing my surroundings. I find it enjoyable and I analyse the colours to work out how I will mix them to paint something. I enjoy all the aspects that make visual life absorbing, like shapes, lines colours, tone , stories to be told, etc and the big one composition.

Very good video on the value of always having a proper camera with you and using it to practice your photography every day. I have a collection of various Olympus PEN cameras which make great small cameras even today. But I do favor the newer tech, so my EDC camera is a PEN E-P7 with the OM System 12-45mm f4 PRO lens. I can get some really great shots with that setup and it fits into a very small bag. Some days I mount a Lumix 20mm f1.7 pancake lens and then it all fits into a pocket.

@@MicroFourNerds I Pulled the trigger on an Oly E-PL8 for around €250,- through MPB just now. My first hand experience with the E-M10 III, E-M5 III and more recently E-M1 III, there's no doubt my mind the specs/quality is there (even if this is a bit older). I'm thinking this generation of PEN camera's is basically E-M10 II internals in a different enclosure, and slightly stripped down software layer (compared to the OMD E-M models) From what's I've read, it's has solid build quality, can take a bit of a beating no problemen. As for menu's, you're not wrong. I hope my first hand experience with aforementioned OMD E-M camera's counts for something in that regard. While it certainly was a bit of chore to set these up to my liking, I hardly go into the menu's anymore once everything was setup to my liking.

Emily, I have the TG-6 specifically for snorkeling and "shallow" diving. I have a question: Which Olympus is the red one @ bottom right @ 2:48 on your video? Thx!! So to answer your question, I also use the TG-6 if I go on a short flight somewhere and don't want to lug my OM-1. Until a week ago, I kept it attached to a tiny retractable 14-42mm 1:3.5-5.6EZ, fitting snuggly in half of an Olympus classic leather Postman's pouch together with a 12-100mm 1:4 IS PRO next to it, which is not light or small but a wonderful lens I love. Not a big case but just one too many to have to deal with the TSA stripping us down as if terrorists even when taking the smallest puddle jumper!! The TG-6 size, accessories and all, is a fraction of all that to carry! I realized not too long ago, that it was shameful not to take my OM-1 with me on trips like that, so when I mentioned the problem to my OM rep store, they suggested the new 14-150mm 1:4-5.6 II ED MSC which has the zoom capabilities of both lenses!!! So I got a smaller Olympus Pouch that barely fits camera and connected lens and now I am set without an excuse to leave it behind next time I go anywhere!! As irony would have it, I then went and bought the new 150-600 mammoth telephoto lens that needs its own suitcase!!! It's not going on a plane with me of course! I like your idea of having a smaller camera like the Lumix S9, but moving to a different platform even a MFT's one means learning to work a whole new camera and to tell you the truth, I am overwhelmed with the OM-1 intricacies as it is!! Though I love my camera, I do not live and breathe it like you do and I still feel unfamiliar to a lot of its workings. The day before, I was taking pictures of the Moon in 1st Q. phase w. OM-1 & the mammoth zoom and some setting would just not let me shoot a picture!! I have no idea what I did, I think I had it set it to Program and it refused to shoot! Luckily, the Moon is no a Puffin and pretty much stayed in place till I just switched to Manual on the dial and managed to get a few good shots (with a tripod). Hope all this didn't drive you nuts!!

It was a great rant. I think my solution will be to get a pancake lens for my Fujifilm XE1 - to make it pocketable. But I can really see the benefit of an even smaller camera still for all the reasons you mentioned.

Omg, I noticed the spiny wheel of death at the beginning and that’s what I’ve started calling it that now too! It’s what puts me off the Ricoh GR

Y, you are right, those smaller Panasonics are probably the best value out there in the used market and they do a pretty good job. I've been running a GX800 for a while now, initially just picked it up as a backup body for travelling. I find I rarely head out without it, even if packing a more serious camera. It so small and light with the 12-32 pancake I can just keep specialised glass on the main body and do all the general stuff with the smaller camera, only having to faff with the big one when it's needed. Less mucking about with lens changes etc.

It is just as you mention, it took me years to realize this. I recently picked a 16mp Lumix and carry it with me everywhere. My high end Sony stays home and I only take it for serious and planned photo shoots.

GF7 - yes, dials would be nicer, but I've also gotten used to "the wheel of doom" lol. Auto - using the wheel for exposure compensation is very easy. I've set up the FN1 button on the left for ISO (again with wheel). I carry two of these, battered but fully functional, one with Pana 20mm pancake, other with the 35-100 -- together they fit in a tiny camera bag (cm 18x12x8 / 7"x5"X3")

I used to have a Nikon 1 which was my hand bag camera- worth checking out as they are inter changable lens cameras although not as small as the ones you mention. My full frame camera comes out a lot, but I’ve invested in a phone with a good camera and that is my every day carry 😊. Some thing in pink or blue does appeal though……

Oooh, me home town. Nice! I love my cheap carries: A Ricoh GRDIII, all the Pentax Q series, a Pentax MX-1, a Mk I Sony RX-100, and most recently an Olympus E-PM2. None of them cost me over 20,000 yen (about $150) on Amazon Japan, and some, like the Ricoh cost me less than fifty quid.

I fully agree on the point of having a small camera system that you can change lenses with as a daily carry. I understand that many people who buy a Fuji X100 or Ricoh GR pay that premium because they want that "challenge" of having one focal length but you could just buy one of the smaller Fuji mirrorless cameras and a pancake lens (Or a camera like you mentioned in the video) and have it still come out to cheaper then a X100 or Ricoh GR. Then you can either shoot it forever at one focal length and have it be a very similar experience for half or less the price; or you can avoid buyer's remorse if you find out that a fixed focal length of 28mm on an APS-C sensor is not a focal length you really use that often and try something different.

Also the higher end 1" sensor pocket zooms (Such as the Panasonic ZS100 which is my daily carry) are a good choice for daily carries too, and I think they very much get overlooked and overshadowed as the only "Zoom" pocket cameras people tend to gravitate towards are often old Digicams with the CCD sensors. Which have their charm... but for a slightly higher end and more responsive goes everywhere does everything camera from Landscapes, Street to even some casual Wildlife photography, I have yet to find a better camera for all of that in one package then the Panasonic ZS100 which is my Daily Carry.

Hi there. I have watched so many of your videos the last couple of weeks. Absolutely love them. I’m a 53 yr old newbie, haven’t even purchased a camera or lens yet. I have had cameras in the past and never used h to em due to their size and I simply couldn’t be bothered to lug it all around. I’m wanting exactly what you are talking about here. Something small and something that I can grow with as I learn. I have seen the GX80 and GX9 along with the GM1 and wondering which one of those you would plump for if it was your money you were spending. I will continue to watch the videos as they come in, thick and fast hopefully. Thanks. Neil.

Hi Neil! If you'd prefer a more comfortable grip, but still a small form factor, I'd go for the gx9 or the gx80. Both have a few more bells and whistles compared to the ones in this video, like in camera stabilisation and a view finder. If you value something super small, you can't get much more compact than the GM1 😁

@@neilprofitt1381 Good choice Neil. Any of Emily’s choices would work fine. I voted with my wallet and own both the GX85(80) and 9. Certainly more chunky than the bodies she mentioned. The GX80 & 9 have the bellls and whistles I want. These bodies have become more expensive over the last few years. I want the IBIS and EVF. Hope you love the camera you buy. You can’t go wrong with a small LUMIX body. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Enjoyed…I actually think you could have added the g100 here as well. It would be on the larger end, but still small (smaller I believe than the gx9) albeit a different style…but newer features and used quite inexpensive.

Im looking for a wee carry. Currently my glove compartment camera is an original em1 with the Pana 14-42 pancake. Not tiny, but small enough with great firmware updates. A bit of flexibility on the lens and one of the few "pro" cameras with an auto lazy git option.

Excellent video and subject as usual! I've been hunting for a GM5 for a while now... really difficult to find with English menu and for a reasonable price... ;) On a side note: has anyone ever mentioned that you have a striking resemblance to the Mona Lisa? I think it could be super fun to recreate the painting as a photoshoot... ;)

I usually shoot with Nikon, FF and APSC, but I couldn't possibly carry even an assortment of my gear everywhere. So I got an old Canon G12 (70€) because it fits in a pocket of my coat. The sensor is tiny even compared to MFT with "only" 10 MP, but boy, is it fun. My setting for spontaneous shooting are Auto-ISO and "P", and I don't mind if some think that's unprofessional -- I am happy to be an amateur, and for "serious" work I still have the Nikons.

I used to carry around my X100 around for EDC, but really even if that was the original one, I felt that it was too much money to carry around that could be broken / stolen / damaged at any moments notice. So I searched for a nice feeling (preferebly metal) camera that doesn't have completely poo image quality, a decent versatility (zoom or not) and a cheap cheap price so that I could carry it around without the fear of losing a substantial part of my savings alongside my backpack. I ended up with a Lumix LX5, which I bought from MPB for 110€. MPB messed up, and they left a battery in a camera AND the charger, so I got a spare for free ! So far no issues, of course it suffers in lower light, but that's for EDC stuff in day time, I honestly don't care that much. I'm not in love with the camera, it's versatile enough so that it doesn't leave me wishing for more for an EDC, and I think that's exactly where EDC cameras should be : if you love them too much you'll end up dissapointed if you break / lose them whereas if they are cheap and you don't care too much about them, as long as they get the job done anything could happen and you'd still be decenty happy. Works great so far for me ! (doesn't prevent me from taking my X100S to carry sometimes)

One of the drawbacks of these older cameras is the autofocus can be a bit slower than more modern cameras, so I wouldn't say they're the best choice for your particular use case. If you wanted a camera solely for that I'd choose something with better AF. If it was something you shot now and again alongside everything else then you'd get by just fine with these style of cameras 😊

The pink one that you compared to the X100 was the GF7 right? What do you think about the GF7 compared to maybe an XE2? I planned to get a used XT3, and a used XE2 is half the price of the used XT3 I plan to buy, and the pancake lens seems very compact with the XE2 (27mm or 18mm). Oh, and I was very tempted to get a Olympus Tough TG 870/860/850, as an everyday camera, since it's waterproof, rugged, got a flip screen. And the small sensor and f number shouldn't be a problem since I mostly like going out when it is brighter, though indoors would still be a challenge)
