I tried watching this video but the auger jammed. Where is that hammer...
Thank you! I was never gonna buy this (in the near future), but I was super excited about it. However, the behavior from Micronics displayed in these reviews shows that they are on a very wrong path. They're probably gonna have to fall on their face hard an learn about humility and acknowledging mistakes before this has any chance of succeeding. It's a shame, because this is such a cool concept. To be clear: the bad behavior I'm talking about is mainly the "you should send the printer back if you don't appreciate our hard work" reply to somebody who's trying to make it work and is just pointing out things that aren't working properly.
@Colorcrayons6 ай бұрын
Yup. I noped completely out of even considering this after seeing the shady tactics micronics are employing. The biggest egregious error of their being, asking reviewers not to post critical reviews until AFTER the KS has ended. Please up vote that review link post so more people see it.
@ClokworkGremlin6 ай бұрын
@@timderks5960before ever watching the reviews, Micronics have not been entirely honest about the technology in their promotional material. SLS is no more magic than resin and FDM. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and one of the huge downsides of SLS is that it's incredibly expensive and wasteful. ALL of the powder used in a print run is spent, whether it becomes part of the object or not.
@timderks59606 ай бұрын
@@ClokworkGremlin I mean, I don't think I've heard them say that it's magic or that it's efficient on material? Sure, they highlighted the positives, like the part being solid, meaning you can machine it afterwards. I don't feel like they are required to also list downsides in promotional material, nobody does that. I don't think we want to become an all-American society where we need warning labels to not put babies inside microwaves, people should still use common sense and do their own research. You don't expect a car manufacturer to tell you that your car is gonna need new tires, oil, other parts, or even gas every so often in an ad, so why would you expect that from the maker of a 3D printer? Just because cars are more common? We all had to learn that cars use gas, so we'll too have to learn that SLS printing uses all the material inside the object.
@ClokworkGremlin6 ай бұрын
@@timderks5960 The promotional video didn't *say* it's magic, but presented it *as* magic, and one of their biggest advertising bullet points has always been "no supports needed" (since the powder provides the support). This doesn't outright *say* that you won't be wasting material making supports, but it does *imply* it, since that's the main reason people don't like having to add supports. Most people are assumed to know that a car needs tires, fluids, and other maintenance. It's an established technology that everyone's grown up around and is assumed to understand. Micronics are leveraging their advertising on the fact that most people *don't* know what considerations you need to put into powder-based printing, because consumer-grade SLS printing *is* new, and most people don't understand it very well. 15 years ago, someone was pitching a resin printer with the same sort of advertising. It was new, it was fast, it was better than FDM, it was going to be the future of 3D printing, and it completely ignored all the shortfalls of resin-based printing. And I don't remember who it even was, because they took the money and ran.

That is literally the point of kickstarter. Big companies who actually have the money and means to bring a product to market, but don't want to fund it themselves have taken over the platform. But that's never what kickstarter was supposed to be. It's meant for startups who want to do something cool, but don't have the money to go from idea to store shelves on their own
@flibblebot6 ай бұрын
@@ThatsPety Exactly. Larger companies have turned KS into nothing more than a pre-sales platform, which is not what it was meant to be. Looking at their KS page, Micronics are at least a year off from a shipping product (probably longer), and they're using Kickstarter in the original intent to turn an alpha/early beta product into a working unit ready for sale. With regards to dodgy practices like asking reviewers to return units or delay their videos, I think that's more because Micronics are (at the moment, at least) just a bunch of nerds with a great idea and little to no experience of sales or marketing. The is definitely the vibe I've had from all their videos so far. I think, though, that @Micronics3D ought to publicly address the comments made by Scotty, Joel and others rather than just attempt to sweep them under the carpet.

This really requires a lot of safety equipment and local ventilation. The filters and fans shown are not sufficient and with the open powder handling you will need a true hepa cartridge vaccum that is explosion resistant to handle the inventable spill. Based on previous, similar Kickstarter products, I predict they're going to have a ton of complications crop up, which significantly delay delivery on the first units shipped, leaving the majority of backers waiting 12+ months longer than initial promise, during which time other companies will come forward with more well-thought-out systems which are cheaper and more reliable, but may miss a few more minor features.

3000$ Super Early Bird deal on Kickstarter is not "from 3000$" price tag everyone had in mind when you talked about it. Real MSRP (at this point) is 4500$ and that's 1-2 years down the line, which means it's probably going to increase even more. And according to reviews it's not even ready for consumer. Why present it like something ready to hit the market at 3K when it's clearly not?

@@ClokworkGremlin Sure but industrial grade or buisiness grade FDM printers are still costing upwards of 3k$ today. And no BambooLab is not industrial grade its a hobby machine that is really good for what it is but far far away from any industrial grade FDM printer. Just so we dont get confused. I bought my first FDM printer already in 2013/14 or something like that and i was among the first people in my country to own a 3d printer. It costed me upwards of 1000€ and 2 years later you could buy way way better 3d printers for around 500€. Today a printer that works the same (but still better) then the one i got in 2013 costs 150€....But this is a decade long process to get here. And personally i think we are still far far away from any usefull cheap consumer grade hobby SLS printer that costs less then 10k€ to operate plug&play mostly without issues.

The reason why SLS printers cost 20.000$+ and not 3.000$ is because it takes 5 years and 17 prototypes to get it right, and in that long and expensive process, you realise that your simple design needed to become more complex and have more expensive parts in order to be reliable. So when people say "the idea is good, but the product is just not ready yet".... I have to say no... the idea that they will be able to make a simple SLS printer and get it right in the first year, first few prototypes, is just not realistic. unfortunately.

The company is pushing misinformation the powder is toxic just by virtue of being a fine powder. It also is a fire and explosion hazard lots of home vacuums have brushed motors and no esd discharge route and will make enough sparks and discharges to ignite vacuuming up a spill of powder. Also you don't know if someone thinks they can use their cyclonic separator to make cleanup faster and they just vacuum up the entire cake which is a direct path to an explosion if they dont have metal grounded duct and true hepa filters to prevent dust from getting into a explosion resistant vacuum blower.

This looks like a very nice tool, and I'm sure than you will be able to address the current manufacturing and shipping issues, prior to your planned ship dates. However, I am extremely dismayed at how nonchalantly and careless you've been in regards to the safe handling of the polymer powder. You only have 1 set of lungs, and any powder that you breath in, will be in your lungs for the rest of your life. Since this entire process exposes one to more particles in a single cycle than an asbestos worker would be exposed to asbestos in their entire lifetime, the risk of mesothelioma is beyond alarming. I've seen the safety protocols in use by companies that use SLS tools, and your use of paper masks is beyond alarming. All points where it is possible for the particles to become airborne, MUST be performed in a sealed glovebox, and the worker must be wearing a full face mask with respirator. That is not an option, it is absolutely mandatory. Watching your videos, and those of your reviewers, handling the powder is reckless, irresponsible, and some might say criminal. I seriously hope you fix this messaging, as the handing of polymer powders is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS! There is also the concern of dust explosions, which are probably less significant, but your customers need to know about those risks as well. You could argue that your customers should be doing their own research, but do you really want to risk it? I still remember the 70s, when 2 of the 3 sugar manufacturing plants in the world blew up due to dust explosions.
