I made several attempts to use FS24 in VR, and it never worked well. There are the unresolved VR mouse bugs, blurry textures, loading problems, random CTD, and the icing on the cake: failure to load at all! Very disappointing, and a missed opportunity to shine for MS and Asobo. I went back to FS2020 and will stay with that sim for a while - it has made me a happy simmer for the last 4 years, and it will continue to do so for the foreseeable future! Seasons Greetings to you Steve, and to the whole simming community!

Give it a try if you can. Not everyone has all the problems that are reported. For me, 2024, despite the many bugs that DO exist, is miles ahead of 2020 both in GA and Airliner flying. Graphics, immersion, loading times, smoothness and even the VR experience is better for me than in 2020. That's with Valve Index, 3080 and 9800X3D, FBW A320N.

I've had every single problem you've described. Plus raytraced shadows do not work in VR which was promised by Asobo according to interviews with other content creators (I'll send you references, if someone doesn't believe me). There was also talk for months before release that quad views was coming and that VR was it's own platform. I expected that with 800 people working on the product for 2 yrs, surely they would have at least a couple people working on VR. So far it doesn't look like we have any new features. Actually it seems we have less than MSFS 2020. In one interview, Jorg did not seem aware that Windows 11 24H2 would render his Reverb G2 useless; and he's the head of Microsoft Flight sim. This is really disappointing, especially for someone who owns an XR-4.

Fully agree, the extremely blurry ground textures also annoy me the most. I tried the Map Replacement Mod, but for me it just doesn't work properly, no matter what I try (Goold Maps, Bing, with or without deleting the Cache etc). The textures are in many regions so bad that it's simply no fun because it destroys the immersion. You fly over Bora Bora and everything looks like crap because the textures look like a blurry pixel mess. It's so frustrating because this is something which could be solved so easily without big performance drop. But I think MS will never fix this. Even if the server issues are fixed sometime. The Bing map material is simply garbage in most regions of the world besides larger cities.
@meyerch-de4 күн бұрын
For me 2024 runs much, very much smoother than the 2020 in VR. I had the loading issues (blurry textures) only at the launch. Now it loads everything in time with no lags. Not everything is perfect and there are things to be improved (ofc), but the only "real" issue I have is the round mouse button. It's not centered, you have align it to the top left.

@LimitlessHorizonVRSimrigs4 күн бұрын
@nathanielshaffer7434 mate I'll chim in, 2024 looks beautiful, but it's got its issues. If you have good internet and a reasonably good PC, get 2024, they are bound to smooth everything out over time. 2020 is very mature now though, lots of add-ons, and still an incredibly well polished sim these days and will run very smoothly compared to 2024. Hope that helps.
@saschpe4 күн бұрын
It's even a mess in free flight. If you care remotely about simulating real flights (because maybe you're practicing for PPL), it's a hilarious adventure. Sure it looks good but it shouldn't crash that often and planes should give the impression that they saw QA at least once.
@stephens21355 күн бұрын
To be fair, I think there are alot of things that MSFS 2024 does right. Even though framerate is lower, it seems much smoother to me than 2020 was. I love the new foliage and seasons in 2024; and the lighting engine and sky...magnificent! The less squirrelly behavior of planes on the runway and physics engine are also impressive including ground tessellation and water physics. The models of buildings in places such as Aspen look like real life! The people in 2024 can actually look like real sometimes and less like the plastic zombi people of 2020. The ground detail and texture quality are a massive improvement over 2020 when it actually fully loads. I love that they changed the size of the moon and sun in 2024 to look the right size in VR. The new dem from Vexcel imaging is superb in VR! It's so good, I honestly can't go back to 2020. There is so much that I didn't mention...time fails me to comment on the incredible plane and ship models. The scenery is less blurry and brown like it seems in 2020 and this makes a huge difference for me using VR. There's so much that nobody talks about. So Asobo and Microsoft have made massive improvements to the new version. So they are listening to the community. Unfortunately, there are alot of very irritating bugs that we thought would be non-existent after the growing pains of 2020 and we still don't have some basic features of VR implemented that would make MSFS 2024 the killer app. So I'm just waiting for 2024 to improve and actually deliver ALL the features that got us all excited to get it in the first place.

I can weather out most of the bugs and data loading issues. What I can’t forgive is the game breaking VR bugs such as the mouse and more importantly the vr toolbar. I anxiously read through the patch notes and not one single VR update was made. As somebody who only flies VR, it’s a gut punch and shows us their priorities are elsewhere.

@nummer82824 күн бұрын
It's not only that. The EFB is unusable and the toolbar is not working, just to name two core features. And if it's not for that, you will see different images per eye due to an issue in transparency, e.g. you can see city lights and airports through clouds at night on one eye but not on the other or see exhaust heatblur whithin the cockpit on one eye but clear on the other. The list could go on and on. Currently VR in 2024 is in an alpha state, at best. It's all the issues from 2D PLUS a big pile of game breaking bugs on top of it.
@CaptainHelisim2 күн бұрын
I could be wrong but it feels to me that if you have 2020 and you've been keeping up with it in terms of DLC to make it something really good, that you can pretty much add a little more DLC to provide essentially what 2024 offers for a fraction of the cost. It's not that 2024 doesn't promise a lot or offer the *potential* for a quantum leap, it's that it actually delivers so little that it comes across as a minor SU update that could be delivered through third party content for less.
@kevint17194 күн бұрын
It's not perfect but I had endless problems using VR with FS2020. Often it took me longer to get it all working than I was able to play in it. With FS2024, other than on the infamous launch day, I have not had a problem with VR. It's just plug it in and play. I'm using a Quest 3 via Virtual Desktop on an i7 / 4070 Super PC. I have noticed streaming problems but they have yet to spoil my enjoyment. It's such a relief to me to be able to load it up and have a flight without putting aside a few hours to sort out any issues that the other stuff is trivial to me. I am sorry but it does not work that way. Raising bugs in the forum (and previously on Zendesk) has almost zero effect. There are day one MSFS 2020 issues which have never been acknowledged. There are other issues introduced in various sim updates (SU5 and SU9 in particular) that have never been fixed. MSFS 2024 won't be any different. They did those three hot fixes and went into vacation mode. Next chance for fixes will be the first sim update "early" next year. Finally, you have to get past forum moderators with your bugs. I've had multiple closed because the mod was of another opinion. Most famously "works as designed". The only way to get some attention is to create content on other platforms that don't get the MS corporate filter. Like YT :-)

I have had some of these issues (like on rare occasions there are no engine sounds but the other sounds are there, like ATC voices). But never once a slow internet service or incomplete or blurry scenery. That just does not happen to me, ever. I enjoy 2024 way more than 2020. (I live in Western USA and there is a rumour that West USA server is the best in MSFS 2020 and 2024). There are some nice things. The default ATC has better voices, and more detailed menu of responses. Also the sim can see if ground vehicles are going to be moving into your path as you taxi, ATC will tell you to hold temporarily for "traffic". One time, I saw the fuel truck arriving when I called. I was in external view and could see it stop short. It was waiting for a ground crew guy to walk across. When the guy had moved out of the way, the truck started moving again and continued on towards my plane. It also takes more time for the fuel truck to arrive, a long time. Which is more realistic.

My worry is when they 'fix' those blurry ground textures, what do we see happen to the performance and bandwidth consumption? Almost feels like they're getting away with some of the performance gains primarily because the resolution is so low on the ground. In terms of the toolbar issue, my fix is clicking on the screen once and then retrying the key command (in my case shift + tab), has fixed the issue 100% of the time for me. With the laggy mouse i found that toggling the cockpit zoom (with the second mouse button) seems to resolve for me - hope these tips help!

No question 24 needs a lot of work in the VR department. For every flight I try in VR in 2024, I do the same trip in 2020. 2020 is crystal clear, smooth. I have high end settings and live traffic. To do the same flight in 24, I need no live traffic, and setting at medium. I have a 13900KF, 4090, 64gb ram and Varjo Aero. MSFS 24 is just not optimised for VR.

I think the biggest issue with MSFS (both versions) VR is that you have no hand tracking or ability to do some kind of mixed mode where you can see some of your peripherals. Also, the very simple fix of not having on your monitor that silly left and right view so others watching can actually see what you're doing. I have been forced to get a program called VoiceAttack which maps spoken commands to key presses to have any chance at all of flying easily without having to constantly lift my headset to see my keyboard. It works great by the way. The views are not bad actually. My rig is by no means high end.

What i hate most is that efb thing. In the skyhawk for instance its mounted to the passenger side window, where you can interact with it, but if you press tab to bring it up as a window, it becomes inopperable, cant click it, or drag it out of the way. This makes it almost unusable in aircraft that dont have a holder for the tablet. Only way to use it then is to go into the pause menu, press tab, manipulate the efb to show what you need in flight, then resume flight and press tab. Hate it since its a very handy device for career mode if it would work properly.

I HAVE seen a black MFD in the Vertigo a few times, but I'm mostly very happy. I even found out how to get the toolbar to work, so now I can change weather and stuff while I'm flying, just like in the 2020 version. I do have a 750/750 internet speed, so that may be part of it, but I guess server capacity problems has nothing to do with my potential speed. I'm not saying that the sim hasn't got its problems, like the marketplace, but when I'm FLYING, I have had amazing experiences for the most part. I have Vive Pro 2 now and the Single Vision specs for Reverb G2 are not correct. I bought a pair of specs with my Mid Range numbers. They are almost there, but not perfect. So I have slightly blurred everything. Seeing the runway from 5 miles is OK, so that is fine by me. There is usually a lot of dust and humidity blurring the horizon in RL, so IMHO, it's fairly true to RL.

When hardware finally catches up a new version is on the horizon with even prettier visuals at slideshow pace. The code is crap and that's it. Just look at Aerofly FS4. Super smooth in VR. My set up is, Tomahawk motherboard, 4090 GPU, 13900f CPU, 128gb ddr5 ram and 900mbs internet. When landing at Heathrow planes suddenly appear and take off and land at opposite ends of Runway 27R at the same time. Buildings suddenly appear. Boats go in erratic circles. If I fly from LaGuardia planes fly across the runway backwards and sidewards and there are a lot of them. I cannot fly my favourite plane, the Fenix A320, as it won't move at all. I thought it would be a lot better than MSFS 2020 but this appears not to be the case. It needs an awful lot of work.

Steve… go check out the new version of AutoFPS that supports both 2020 and 2024. Blows away the Asobo built in dynamic tuner. Even automatically disables the MSFS built in when it’s running so no conflicts. Can have separate settings for each version of the sim, and VR vs 2D. Can’t wait for your experience with it.
@henrycartier2 күн бұрын
So how does that work, it just drops the settings automatically to keep a consistent performance or does it do some magic to the code to maintain FPS at your preferred settings?
@jamessimmons83522 күн бұрын
@henrycartier it dynamically adjusts the key Sim settings OLD, TLD, and Clouds to achieve the optimal or target FPS needed to keep the display smooth and stutter free. Simple, but elegant. And having knobs to tweak how it behaves is a bonus.

I did hear a trick that if 2024 is running crap to shut it down and restart it and that can often fix the problems. I haven't tried it myself yet as I'm off work with a large hematoma on my shin after falling off a platform. Frustratingly my crystal light came yesterday and I can't try it. 😢

That might be one of the solutions, I've heard stories about memory leaks so that would explain it. But then again the problem would likely come back. Great sim...play it for a while until memory is full.

MS 2024 actually is a gem and I fly it only now, in VR. But yes the LOD issues (i.e. stones, rockes and bushes just popping in when 2m or so over the ground when landing on what you think from above is just a grass field), CTDs and broken toolbar are a problem. The problem with the mouse disappearing I had more frequently in 2020 than in 2024. It was not really fixed in 2020. And in 2024, the lighting is much better. I do not want to miss the opportunity to see animals when bush flying either, and not to miss the ground details when you are on ground, or the rocky walls of mountains when flying close by.

You have a channel for this, so your take is gonna be different to an extent. For me, I'm annoyed at the state of the game, but i remember 2020 in the first year, second year, third year, etc. They'll get there, eventually. Ive seen glimpses of what this sim can be, when all systems are working as they should all of the time, which gives me excitement. The way i look at it, if they spent more time alpha and beta testing, we wouldn't have the chance to fly now. Last night i got lucky and did an ultralight flight around Crater Lake at sunset in VR, data must have been streaming great cuz the whole flight was gorgeous and special. The fidelity, at least in that area, is not nearly the same in 2020. In a way, I'm being an apologist, even though i hate unready releases. That said, I'm having a great time when stuff goes well, and when it's not, usually it only takes me 5 or 10 minutes to figure out how the session will be, and if it's poor, i just go do other stuff that day. Just my personal experience, and I'm glad you and others are being vocal.

I’ve given up on MSFS 2024 and have gone back to X-plane VR - night and day difference. Aircraft VR interactions just work. Switches are responsive and accurate. The glass cockpit frame rate is synced with the overall frame rate giving a smooth appearance. MSFS 2024 removed the +\- (knob increment or decrease) VR controller assignment - it’s completely broken!

I feel like the odd man out here, but I'm actually enjoying 2024..Quallifier, I have an older pc, 2080 card, nothing high end and the few times I've tried VR it's crashed, using my reverb g2... Solution? I just haven't been flying vr and I won't until I update the system and the headset. On my old system at 1440 is running great, the new lighting is stunning and I look forward to the constant improvements we'll see over the next few years. I guess I remember the fiasco of the 2020 release and came in with low expectations, knowing that as things get fixed, and as third party addons become compatible, this platform will truly blow our minds. The release was chaos, but I think they might be victims of their own success, totally underestimating the initial demand. I think your channel is great at keeping Asobo's feet to the fire and fix the problems, the rest of us need to relax a little. If you're not happy with it, fly 2020 and come back in a few months.

Thanks for your review Steve and I agree with all you say. Feels like a mountain to climb with FS2024 and I don't know if I've got the will power. FS2020 could have benefited with some more love from MS to iron out the problems but I don't think that will happen. Never thought I'd say this but thinking of migrating to XPlane for consistency and to leave the eye candy behind.

Thanks Steve! I have to disagree on the points that we don't like MSFS 2024. Personally I'm not too bothered about the apparent streaming issues. What I've seen of the blurry textures aren't that bad and I've not experienced any lack of sound or half a cockpit showing up recently - the visuals remain head and shoulders better than MSFS. For me it's about the poor interactions, especially in VR, and the bugs, some of which are really upsetting like the ATR and A320 v2 occasions having the avionics freezing. How can something look so good and have a complete lack of polish. The ATC window drives me bannanas and just little things which are just worst in MSFS 2024 than they were in MSFS. Shame but I feel they don't even get it which is more worrying. Do they actually have anybody who lives and breaths testing this sim because at times it doesn't feel like it. 👍

I do feel bad for everyone having a bad experience with the sim. I must say I’m having a great time so far. I’m using a 4090 and a PSVR2 setup and it’s working great. With the PSVR2 converter I’m getting great frame rates and a really immersive experience. I fly the 777 in real life so I mainly use the sim to do basic IFR and VFR flying using the A2A Comanche and it’s great. I do find that clarity was an issue on using the G1000 on the 172 for example. My main issue is the EFB just not working. However combining the A2A Comanche and the TDS GTNXi there’s no need for the EFB for now for me. The mouse definitely needs to be fixed though. Hope patches will come soon and everyone can enjoy the sim.
