10:00 Lyle's pilot was telling the truth. Larger planes have deep fuel reserves and if they're full enough they can make the aircraft incredibly heavy. It can directly damage the aircraft to land past a certain weight threshold.

That's how the Concord went down, they aren't supposed to fill the tanks completely or it becomes a lot more dangerous to take-off or land as by-products develop and take up more space in the tank - think of it how a balloon is a lot more fragile when fully inflated as opposed to when you only fill it halfway.

Passenger jets are able to dump fuel in emergencies if they are at a high enough altitude that the fuel will evaporate before contaminating the ground.

aloo snackbar the plane that they were flying- no. A large plane like a Boeing or an airbus, maybe. There’s only so much stress the landing gear and etc can be put under. Fuel is 6 lbs a gallon so it could get very heavy. Many planes dump fuel before landing too

The simulator uses the same technique that Google maps 3D view uses. Satellite data taken from multiple angles projected onto low-poly geometry. I've used the same technique when creating accurate-to-life cliffsides for game environment work. It's why it looks fantastic from far away, and like ass up close.

Planes sometimes need to dump or burn fuel in order to land, the reason why is that you don't want to land above the maximum structural landing weight and cause structural damage, and you also don't wanna over run the runway, because your landing speed is higher the heavier the aircraft is. Its also harder to bring the aircraft to a full stop due to the high kinetic energy caused by the extra weight. So planes dump fuel due to structural and performance limitations.

One of the sims we used was basically a cockpit in an enclosed room. It had like 3 projectors to make a ~190 wrap around the cockpit and there's a computer for someone to run scenarios or fail your equipment and stuff.

This reminds me of one time when I was living in the US (for college) and this guy who was having a small party at his house asked me if I wanted to try his VR headset. It was my first time trying VR, and the first thing I tried was Google Earth. It was magical being able to zoom out into space, rotate the Earth and zoom back in right on my house at home (Sweden). I think stuff like Microsoft Flight Sim and Google Earth VR can really help people look at the world in a different way. It's not like actually travelling abroad of course, but it's a whole lot more interesting than looking at a flat map or a plastic globe on a desk, especially when you have someone with you to show you around!

The thing about "too much fuel" was true. Fuel is heavy, and an aircraft has to be a certain weight to make it across a certain amount of runway without running over and crashing into terrain. There is also the consideration of the ability of the plane's landing gear to withstand contact with the ground; the landing gear can fail, causing the plane to crash and possibly ignite the massive fuel stores in the wings. The pilot's choices are generally to dump the fuel, or burn it off if there is danger of the fuel landing in an inhabited area.

As a pilot I can confirm the story about having too much fuel to land is true. Large airliners like that will have a max landing weight and if they’re above that they have to burn fuel to get down to weight to land.
