Great video, and has meant that I can now use FS in VR. Your comment re: only switching to VR headset when in the game, changed everything. The hideous stutter and black out whilst the game was loading just jarred everything and I thought until this video, FS was unplayable. Thanks to you I could make everything to work. The lack of resolution of VR is very deceptive, tho. Inside the cabin I can't barely see the buttons...and the GPS screens are completely unreadable 🥺

OK, some steps missed here. So I installed oculus software, got link working. I have MSFS2020 installed (without steam) and no SteamVR or OpenXR or whatever installed and.... works fine. I have a 3060Ti and i10700 but was seeing buttery smooth graphics. But I did notice that the dials were quite blurry. I upped the render resolution and maintained the frame rate, using 72Hz on the headset. This didn't graphically look much different. When I change the sim to New York all hell broke lose - so I reduced render resolution and it didn't help but it turns out it was the shrubbery that is central park. Turn your shrubs off and you can fly around NY no problem. One other thing I noticed which I guess you'll not know until you tried it is that the FOV is quite narrow when flying your plane. I got used to MSFS on my ultra wide monitor. But being as the tracking works so well I found its much easier to fly circuits etc with VR so its fine.

A really helpful video. I've been swapping between the oculus app and steam vr's openxr. I have found that oculus' version is a little smoother, although after seeing your video I might swap back and try steam vr again.

Yes the oculus app is known to run smoother. A lot of others said they see performance drops when they use steam vr

Do you know if this process works without using steam vr? I got my sim from the microsoft store so dont really want to have more resources being used up by having oculus desktop app and steam vr open simultaneously

Hi, Great video!!! It work verry well for me now, with an RTX 3080. 40fps, 80hz res 1.2, settings in the game by default, render scale 100. I will try with 72hz to up the résolution. Thx a lot!!! I dont know why, but steamvr seems to work better than oculus vr with your settings. Maybe it s due to the vr option in nvidia panel that is set to "2" ?!?

I got it to work but my frames in vr are just so low, even when I lower the settings, but on high end settings in non vr my FPS is like 124 :/

Well, I tried FS2020 steam edition, connected with airlink, but the sim says "no headset detected" when I turned on VR mode. Oculus software says headset is paired with PC. What's going on?

However, waiting on pullin the trigger on a strap, but I might have to do it sooner as using the original strap for some time the sides rub on the black foam and making the strap turn black...its gross... anyone have this issue wearing the orig strap for a long time? Aside from this getting those settings right in msfs is a chore but worth it! Thanks again...look forward to more vids

Every time I put on the VR headset it put me outside of the cockpit. I eventually discovered I have to go into settings, while in VR mode, and change the camera off of cockpit then back into cockpit. Now I can't even get past the 1st tutorial because it's asking me to select something from the control bar, but i don't see a control bar.

Hello, hopefully someone can help give me answer! I have a oculus quest 2, I’m running a more than capable gaming pc, I’ve properly installed msfs 2020 and I have the oculus app, downloaded and openxr as well. I followed the instructions online to make sure it’s directed the right path, I also followed your instructions on connecting the headset and linking it, I don’t have a problem doing that, I leave both running and headset ready to go, I open msfs and it’s like the sim isn’t recognizing the headset, when I look under controllers I see my joystick, I see my mouse and my keyboard, I also have a touch pointer, but no headset, and when I try to assign vr activate/deactivate, it says I’m trying to assign action to a device that is not selected. Am I missing something on the sim or openxr or oculus app? Please help!

Suspecting GamePass version won't answer for VR, so I broke down, and got Steam version of FS, and Steam VR, so, hopefully, I'll be able to get this working. Sadly, all I can afford is what I have, which is a GTX-970, on FX8350 (8 core). I've been having fail, after fail, with the cable, but once, was able to run a game in Steam VR, so, fingers crossed.

100%!!! And until they get that part cleaned up, VR won't take off. There should at the very least be suggested presets when you select your VR headset from a drop down. Right now there were too many variables in too many different places for the average consumer to figure this out without investing some serious time.

This is a mine field. Bought a laptop and quest 2. I'm down £1500. Can't get it to work. Got into the cockpit in vr. No hands. I've got steamvr and oculus working. Absolute pain in the arse.... all the oculus games work flawlessly. I'm about to drop £4000 on a gaming rig and hotas controllers just for this game to run properly. It's killed my soul doing all this! Thanks for the great video tho. Helped alot. But some other issues are hitting me

I have Msfs 2020 on Xbox Games pass do i still need to launch with SteamVR and If so how do I launch Msfs through Steam Vr i can see my recently played games but Msfs is no where insight bit of a noob when it comes to pcs as i recently changed from consoles also while trying to use Msfs in VR when it finally detects my Quest2 its as if I’m moving my head but I’m completely still. Just to be clear, you're not seeing the same quality in VR as we see in this video, are you? Because what I see (Quest 2/Steam VR/Quest Link - official cable) looks like it's 800x600 res with that 3d glasses look, in my headset. I peek out of them and the image on my monitor looks waaaaaaay better (1440p - Ryzen 7/RTX 3070ti/32GB RAM).

I purchased Microsoft flight simulator through steam hoping to use it with my Oculus quest 2. No matter what setting I put it at I can't get above two or four frames per second. Terrible lag. I have Rizen 5 with a 1060 Nvidia 24gb ram .. I'm going to return Microsoft flight simulator and try to purchase standalone version so I can ditch the steam VR cuz I think that's the problem.

Wonder if you can help, watched your vid, thanks for that. I bought MSFS2020 from Microsoft so it is on my computer ssd drive. Plays perfect in 2D... bought oculus rift s yesterday and have been on it now 24 hours!!! I followed your vid but my ctrl key + tab will not but me in VR , I have to go into options and select VR mode from the settings and that puts me in VR ok but I have the box saying "Please look straight in front of you VR-camera reset key to set the pilot view" you cleared this with space bar I think, but all my keyboard is dead at this time...nothing, even have to shut PC down to get out of it...any ideas, any help is must appreciated. Easy fix! You can assign a mouse button or a button on your HOTAS to toggle VR. In the sim go to Options then Controls. On the left side make sure you click the arrow next to “assigned” until it shows “all” then search VR. It will show as unassigned. Click on the empty box to the right of the action and then assign it to whatever button you choose. Good to go!

I tried doing all of this, but all that happened, was my PCs audio got shut down, and I could not get it back, until I uninstalled Oculus app. I was also never able to get the headset to connect to the PC when the sim was running. On cable, the Oculus app showed connection, but it never really did anything, and the sim kept telling me there was no VR headset connected. Oh well. LOL don't know how you guys make this stuff look so easy, but, ok, whatever.

No cable necessary! You can use Virtual Desktop and a decent router. Head to my channel page and you will find a wireless setup tutorial. Then subscribe of course. 😉

I'm not sure what I am doing wrong but I can't get that sweet smooth feel when turning my head. Mine is jittery, and i see the black edges, when turning my head. I have Ryzen 5 3200, 32gb ddr4, rtx 3070. As i'm typing this i am realizing it was installed on a HDD, any chance that is playing a role?!

I would say that the hdd isn’t helping. Get an ssd or nvme to speed things up. I would also lower that render scale down quite a bit based on your CPU. It’s most likely bottlenecking your GPU.

You should just activate the oculus pc app then connect headset then load game and you should get an option to switch to vr,but the new msfs update seems to have broken this at the moment

When I go to graphics in msfs and switch from pc to vr I don’t have any key bindings to switch to vr from 2d. Am I supposed to have default key bindings or am I to set key bindings? If so, how do I do that? Hope you or one of your subscribers can help me. Thanks in advance.

The default is control+tab to toggle VR. If you want to reassign that go into controls look for the “toggle VR” option and assign it to a new key or button. I have mine bound to a button on my throttle so I don’t have to fumble my way to the keyboard with the goggles on. Good luck!

Manually assigning keys solved that problem. I have just one more problem which may be a graphics setting. I’m seeing a black frame (like a black picture frame without a picture in it) that is to the right of center. Any ideas as to what this could be? Again, thanks in advance.

Sir: enjoy your videos, and now I have a fast computer. I play Aerofly and X Plane 11 with the Oculus Quest 2 headset, both tethered and wireless without problems. @@joelmartinez595 Yes, I bought an HP Reverb G2 and it worked instantly. Never did get the Oculus working on the flt sim. Then I abandoned Aerofly and X Plane 11, they are outclassed by MSFS.
