Microsoft HoloLens review, AR- mind blowing!
My expectations were already high, but when I tried the HoloLens, my mind was blown at how outrageously good it is.
I show you Microsoft Office 365 running through my HoloLens, accessing Excel and Word as Holograms. I then access Microsoft Edge for web browsing plus KZbin, just incredible; AR for business.
I run some extremely cool HoloLens apps such as LSrD (wow, imagine the DMT trips you could simulate on this!) and then Galaxy Explorer to see our Solar System including the Sun and Saturn at very close up range.
I then run a Beta 3D simulation of a shark, once again, absolutely incredible. I zoom into the shark hologram whilst it's swimming around my living room.
It's without doubt the hand gestures need some work as it's hard to manipulate objects when at a distance. The only other problem is the field of view is small, but once this has been resolved through future iterations of the HoloLens, AR is set to change the world.
Then, to go a step further with my futurist hat on, consider the Softcell Lens (AR in a contact Lens) and the EyeTap and the future really looks exciting, I see AR impacting every part of our lives. If we want it to of course.
I also link to my blog in the video where I discuss AR street dating, volumetrically captured video conferencing, AR shopping, facial and emotion recognition, and much more; www.mackie.xyz/james-mackie-pu...
I discuss emails, text messages and phone calls delivered through AR, the replacement / death of mobile phones and the personal computer. Death of the mouse & keyboard, eye-tracking, field of view, Adaptive Focus (Magic Leap) and even, imaginary friends!

"Game changer" has been an over used term when talking about new technologies this decade! Much like the overuse of the word "Awesome" In this video however James Mackie rightly uses the phrase! "This is a Game Changer!" Because guess what? It truly is! The implications for the uses of this technology are so far reaching that everyone should be more excited! The video gives a great first look at the potential of this incredible product! I look forward to seeing more from the AR Hololens!

I remember reading is a science magazine (probably was "Popular Science") around 2004 that in the future there would be glasses you could look through and do this. They had an illustration of a young girl in a family room looking through basically ordinary glasses but was read a news article with them. It talked about watching tv with them and other uses similar to what this video shows. That always stuck in my mind over the years, and I wondered if it would truly ever come to pass. Also, it's amazing they can anchor those floating images in place. A couple of years ago I wondered if that would be possible anytime soon. Looks pretty dang good in this video.

+Marley roberson, yes remember Robocop ? I was fascinated with Robocop when it came out, that was 1987 so 30 years ago ! Also Kurzweil has made some very cool predictions regarding AR that you can read online. Another prediction was by Baba Vanga that is very interesting relating to AR, however ! I cannot verify this information, I have only read about her predictions online and haven't confirmed the source information / timings etc. Marley, the floating holograms are pretty special, I can shake my entire head and the holograms do not move at all ! Very clever... The video is a true representation of what I see... Just that I see a very slightly smaller field of view. I actually see better than 720 though, which is all the HoloLens records at !

in any other era hololens would be a game changer. But these days, technology is going so fast that things are getting obsolesced befor they even go mainstream. And I believe magic leap is going to eat hololens for lunch. But as far as AR in general? Yeah. The future is about to be so weird that it literally is beyond anything science fiction writers have ever conceived. Think about that. For the first time we are entering a phase of technology where we can't refer to a movie or book or anything for even a clue as to what it will be like. The closest, would probably be the movie 'the congress' with Robin Wright Penn.
@mackie-themadscientist6057

+TheAngryCanary I hear you on Magic Leap, have you tried it ? The main benefit MagicLeap has over HoloLens is Adaptive Focus which I wrote about here; www.mackie.xyz/james-mackie-puts-it-out-there-the-next-technology-megatrend/ One thing I've learnt though, as a person who has sold MS products through my business for almost two decades is, never underestimate Microsoft. They were fairly quick off the bat with AR. And MS are the clear leaders in the business market, I mean who doesn't use Office / Office 365 ? Google tried with Google Apps, didn't get anywhere close in the business world. Then look at all the Office add-ons such as Lync (Skype for business), SharePoint, Matter Center, Dynamics etc. Yes I agree, it's beginning to look like a very Kurzweilian world, I'm just so glad it's in our lifetime we can see it. I'm using the HTC Vive as we speak and it's incredible too.
@mackie-themadscientist6057
@mackie-themadscientist6057 7 жыл бұрын
+Rodney Burton- well it seems most people are commenting that Magic Leap is better than the HoloLens, I can't comment as I haven't tried it, and although Magic Leap recently raised $1.4Bn, MS still surely have larger resources to put into this. Yes I agree that most communication is translated non-verbally. You can use volumetric capturing to scan friends / yourself to then have a video conference. Skype beta is already available on the HoloLens. Volumetric capturing is already accurate enough to the point of being able to read micro expressions and see individual hair strands of the subject you are looking at. That's why I'm so certain about AR's future, because although it has an incredibly long way to go, it's already good enough to be extremely useful. I am sure AR will kill smart phones, the TV and computer displays, and many other things. I recently downloaded Unity to create my own holographic games because as of today, no one is an expert in AR. By that I mean, of course there are people who can create waveguided optics, or intense Unity experiences, but no one really knows the full potential of AR and VR just yet. There is so much opportunity in this space. When I think about new technology that's been coming out on the platform of the Internet and mobile apps over the last decade, it's frightening to think we didn't come up with these ideas before. For example, how is crowd funding such a new concept that's made people m/billions of dollars, when the idea of crowds, the internet, collective resource pooling (borrowing / lending) has been around for many years ? When you think about that you can see that there are going to be some awesome opportunities with AR / VR, so it's thinking caps on for now :-)

Trueisfalse IsTrue In a recent talk by Magic Leap, the comment was made that in the near future half the audience would be wearing them. So, we will see. The hardware, right down to the chips and motherboards is all being custom-designed just for the device from the ground up, which should give allow for very efficient small computers.

Great video James. Very tempted to get one myself now - The price is pretty steep mind. Have you seen what Magic Leap is working on? Apparently their device takes in to consideration the light in the room in order to make the AR more realistic!
@mackie-themadscientist6057
@mackie-themadscientist6057 7 жыл бұрын
+The Marcus Hedges Trend Orchestra thank you.. Yes the price is steep but it will come down, plus you can buy much cheaper devices now to get involved in AR/MR/VR. Yes I have seen what Magic Leap is working on, and read most of the literature available, it seems adaptive focus is their key USP and even though it's tethered, the PC you are tethered to will fit into your pocket, but all speculation at this point. The AR/MR with the HoloLens is very realistic, you can adjust the brightness from the HMD to accommodate differing light levels in the room, I'm fairly certain this brightness could be automatically sensed easily in future iterations. When you look at the holograms closely, it really feels as if it's HD and "there" transpose 3D cinema, the closer you look, the more you realise it's an illusion. A lot of people are talking about Magic Leap, and of course they must have something special for the investment they've received from Alibaba, Google and Co. Just never underestimate MS, they've got a great CEO who's increased their share price and they have a model that is available and this week they released the HoloLens commercial suite; www.hololens.com/commercial +The Marcus Hedges Trend Orchestra I'm releasing a second MR video in the next week to show closer resolution of volumetric holographic 3D characters so subscribe or DM me and I'll post you the video to get your thoughts :-)

Ah I see, we live in an exciting time. I'm a composer, and I'm intrigued to to see how this could affect my workflow when composing music. I'm very eager to try it out! I noticed that the shark has a slight transparent quality, like the opacity had been turned down, is this the case when you're looking through the headset, or is it solid? I was unaware that that Magic Leap had received funding from such companies - Definitely validates that something good is going on behind the scenes if Google is getting involved. I look forward to hearing more on that as it progresses! Definitely interested in hearing your thoughts on MR. I've subbed but let's stay in contact.
@mackie-themadscientist6057
@mackie-themadscientist6057 7 жыл бұрын
+The Marcus Hedges Trend Orchestra you can choose the opacity if you're building an app, so yes the shark was semi-opaque, but it doesn't have to be. Wow, I think this would be awesome for your composing, I watch Andre Rieu sometimes and often thought how it would help. However the typical audience are there for the collective harmonics experienced from humans so although MR won't work in a collective capacity, it could hugely benefit you as a composer. Seeing all of the notes in your periphery, could also be a distraction !?
@TrendOrchestra
@TrendOrchestra 7 жыл бұрын
Ah interesting to know. From a compositional/workflow perspective, It would be so useful to stand in an AR work space, surrounded by the various screens I switch between. Mixers, Plugins, instruments etc. I'm also part of a tech startup called Filmstro, we have created a piece of software that combines talent with technology, enabling anyone to control what a composer has previously created through our UI. We're calling it 'Music that moves'. We definitely want to make movements into the VR/AR worlds eventually. Imagine the possibilities with our new dynamic music file format and the ability to manipulate compositions in a virtual space.

Thanks +cuckoomusic and yes agree the prospect of AR/MR is more enticing than VR ! Yes unfortunately the video / playback recording is relatively low res at 720p, however, it's much better when I'm actually watching / experiencing the holograms, as opposed to recording them. Watching is in fact HD still at 720p, it's just that recording in low light does not render the best results. Looking forward to being able to record video at much higher quality in future versions of the HoloLens, but hopefully you can get the idea of what I'm attempting to portray...

James Mackie Yeah I checked it out, it looks better. Also I have another question if you don't mind me asking. Do you know if this is the final version of the HoloLens, or will there be many iterations before public release. Because I imagine this is a developer kit, unless i'm wrong. It's just that the field of view is something I've seen videos about and it's strange how the AR is shown on a portion of the screen, and if there are future models maybe the FOV will increase for an even richer experience.

Nope not being paid by MS I've addressed this before, yes you are correct the FoV is not great it's app. 40 degrees. My next video of a new technology is demonstrating another AR tech, 50 degrees FoV And yes agreed finger tracking not great, but as you know, the tech is improving rapidly But it's not a bad first attempt, the gesture control My HoloLens never freezes, I use it regularly

James Mackie I did test it 3 weeks ago (heavy enviroment) Resolution still a big issue we are in a world where 4k is becoming the standard and good resolutions are already 5k, tech like Ps4Vr, oculus, hololens, and meta lack HD per eye, which will be a major problem in order to integrate them into our daily use or other thing than low res games. I think graphic cards need to jump into a new era where they can support 16x more load but consume 4x less and be 20x smaller before any vr ar mr become really usable

There is a huge gap between showing a product on KZbin and actually being able to deliver it to the public. There is a lot of suspicious secrecy around Magic Leap, veiled with comments like "We are mimicking the brains graphics processor" and "Delivering photons directly to your retina". I hope that they are actually creating a game changing technology, but I see the possibility that Magic Leap may go down as an over hyped investment blunder. Only time will tell.

if im gonna spend a grand for something to sit on my head its gotta feel smooth and not clunky regardless of the iteration number. You don't release it if it isn't ready and his finger gestures and the slight difficulty he has performing them just remind me of the kinect and its delay time. i really like the idea but these little things would ruin it for me. just like the limited fov issue that cant be solved yet

Thats how it looks when you use the recording software, in real world experience its really smooth and responsive, plus the quality of the holograms is extremely good. if you want to see the smoothness of it, there are videos on youtube witch they put a camera near the screen and you can clearly see how smooth the animations are.(on Austin Evans channel shows this)

I already can see one way to use this for my engineers....its so exciting the way TECH is being developed these days. I'm looking on at VR and AR and i'd agree that AR seems so much more in-tune to having a better experience. Flipside, both technologies can be also quite concerning if we become irresponsible in its uses (as with most things in the world)...thanks for that cool eval and subscribed

Thanks +It_is_I Leclerc for subscribing ! I love AR and VR, it's truly exciting times for us to live now in these other micro-dimensions. I heard someone is using VR in float tanks to assimilate the feeling of being in space. But there are more business uses for AR. Agreed about irresponsibility, I don't like to think everyone is recording everything 24/7, but the benefits outweigh the pitfalls IMHO.

I've been talking about this for years pre-google glass. Hololoens has the capability to replace every electronic device from TV's, to keyboards, to phones and laptops, to PC's to games consoles basically it will do it all. Plus the learning/teaching capability is immense, I'd love to experience walking around the natural history museum with Hololoens on creating the environment the dinosaurs lived in, putting skins over the top of the skeletons of dinosaurs information coming through about when they lived, how they hunted, weight, size comparisons etc, or seeing a monolithic early man settlement in actions all the things they would have been doing etc The possibilities in the real world are endless! Looking forward to the future of augmented reality :or mixed reality as Microsoft like to call it) oh and they have just provided a mixed reality application in their Microsoft Windows 10 update, not checked it out yet but it's definitely hitting mainstream soon.
