Laid off by Chase bank, a job that took all the fun out of IT. Looking back they did me a favor. I started a business providing IT for small businesses and I have never been happier. I have exceeded the salary I had before, I work much less hours and from home, and I take as many vacations as I want because 95% of the work can be done from anywhere.

1/29/2018 - It's been over 3 years since Microsoft laid me off and my family and I are doing much better. The KZbin career took off and branched out into a live streaming career on Twitch and between all you awesome supporters and the platforms that have been generous letting me upload and share my content I'm able to provide for my family. That being said this year (2018) I'm going to kick things up so I can not only get by with my family but actually have some money to put away for our future. I just wanted to thank every single person that watched this video and all the amazing people that understood my situation and sympathized with me for the support, it really did make things much easier over the last few years and continues to make my future brighter. Oh, and to the few haters that felt it necessary to kick someone while they were down. I just hope that you also found something good in your life to help kill off that negativity that only makes you feel good when you're boot is on someone else throat. I hold no ill will or feelings towards you for trolling me because i realize you were probably dealing with something similar and hopefully you overcome what is holding you back and move forward in a positive way. I contract as a 3d artist at Microsoft for about 10 years when I lived in Seattle, commuting across that 520 bridge everyday. I worked on the flight sim team, the forza team, The crimson sky's team, and the project G team, went on 3 8hr interviews over the years and never got hired. But they kept calling back to work on projects. It was so confusing. I finally started turning down contract jobs there and went to work full time for Sony.

***** I one worked at Commonwealth Bank, i did absolutely nothing wrong now.. let me clarify that as well you know how when you get fired, you AT LEAST have some idea or some guess of what you did or MIGHT HAVE done... right ? i seriously have no fucking idea what i did . i was working there for quite a while, one day i'm on my way to work and i get a call from the agency that placed me there they said i had to come to head office this morning instead of reporting to work i was like "ummm ok......WTF" so i went in and it was like taking a gun and a badge from a cop they took my id and passkey and they said.... GET THIS SHIT "From this point on you are not allowed in the building" like...wtf it's not like i perhaps started a fight with someone and i was considered a security risk or something i literally did nothing and , if they would have said "Martin, we have decided to let you go" at least i could understand that but i wasn't even told i was being let go so.. i asked "why, what did i do wrong" and the agency simply said "we are not at liberty to disclose that information" and i'm like WTF what do you mean, YOU ARE LETTING ME GO, because of a decision that the bank made, can't i just know what i did wrong, because i have no idea what i've done they said "No, we've been instructed to not tell you" I MEAN SERIOUSLY what could i have done that was that bad that it resulted in me being expelled from the worksite with no explanation and threatened that if i ever returned i would be fine seriously it's not like i killed or bashed someone on my lunch break for fucks sake to this day i have no fucking idea what i did as far as i was aware, i was doing my work, i was even doing well, i was in finance approvals up to $50k and i was getting commended on how quickly i was processing the applications the manager 3 days prior, commended me on my efforts i seriously have no fucking idea what happened the only question that keeps going through my head is WHAT PROMPTS A COMPANY TO FIRE AN EMPLOYEE WITHOUT ANY SINGLE EXCUSE' i mean, you would have to have done something really fucked up, for them to not want to talk to you and.... i did nothing so.... yeah go figure

Worked at Microsoft before and it sucked. I quit after being burnt out from working over time all the time. The senior manager was an assh*le. Too many vendors from India competing for projects and a lot of politics. I'm glad I quit and would never go back unless they make me the CEO. People bragging about working for Microsoft, Google , Apple etc are dumb and brain washed. Corporations don't care about people, they only care about the bottom line. Don't be loyal to companies because they give a damn about their employees. Work where you get paid well and enjoy working. Don't work for a brand. Always look for better opportunities and jump ships when they pay you better. You have to look out for yourself. Good luck.

Take this guy's advice with a grain of salt. Evaluate your own situation and envision yourself at any future potential employer. For example, I work at one of the big ones currently. I turned down an offer a year ago that paid 20% more, because I saw 60-hour work weeks, a dimly lit cubicle, and my peers all being 40+ (I'm 28) in my future if I accepted. LOL good point but You're not getting my point, I'm not speaking of educated professionals coming here. Companies will cry QUALITY to the heavens. When in reality all they care about is the bottom line. So I'm speaking strictly about the sweat shops where they take people, train them poorly, treat them poorly and try to pawn the product off as being the same. Unfortunately it isn't. But thats moddern business. This IS happening, I've experienced it with my own eyes. 7 on shore DBAs down to one supported by offshore. Disaster. 10 person infra team down to 2, supported by offshore, total disaster. There is more but typing on a phone stinks. My point is they are deleting years long pros and replacing them with fresh lambs from nowhere to save a buck. Problem is the work doesn't get done correctly or at all and the now diminished staff has too do double, triple what they did before. Meanwhile, management gets pats on the back and huge bonuses for saving the company so much money. Oh well.

I can tell you have alot of experiance with Windows 8... The "Tablet" part of it only comes into play when you start up the computer for about 5seconds. Search bar, power options, start menu, sometimes simply opening a picture takes you to the tablet part of it, and many other things. I personally don't hate it but I can see why others wouldn't like it.

OK your comment reminds me I might be doing a COMPLETE spin and switch to Apple. Because my music studio requires an iPad to link and mix with my music program anyway. Might as well right? Microsoft is shit, and here's a heads up for ya. People would call me as I was working in tech support, and some have said that they would never switch to Windows 10, or that they hated the switch that came about. Some were even forced into Windows 10 by the auto install. Yeah Windows in 2016 is a complete disaster. It's been 2 years since this layoff and the only thing Windows has going for them under their new OS is the way its programmable parts work. And the layout design just sucks hard.

Brick and Order I was forced into the Windows 10 install. I'd said no I don't even know how many times and woke up one day with it done. It locked me out of a ton of documents and overrode my access to my already purchased Office suite, and that caused me to turn a paper in late, since I had to find an alternative software etc etc etc. Some people try to push the blame on me, but when you've already said no, you don't expect to wake up with it done in spite of your expressed wishes. Total bullshit.

I'm really sorry for that. I had a similar lock-up to my productivity due to the taskbar stalling permanently, and the media player bugging out FOREVER in Windows 10. The fixes are online unfortunately it's a tasteless pursuit. Very unacceptable and even for someone with patience. Thanks a lot Microsoft. I'll never take another look at their Surface book.

Why switch to Apple? Apple products are made from the infamous Foxconn factory. Look at all those worker testimony reports about exactly how Foxconn treats them and the unrealistic expectations that Apple sets on them. Apple products are made for a fraction of the cost of a Microsoft product and then they charge double what Microsoft would charge. There's a reason that the Apple facility in Cali they are like royalty because they have Chinese slaves to do all the real grunt work. Apple is among the shadiest companies in the world just below by Monsanto or BP. Microsoft is going downhill after a series of fuckups in its attempt to enter into the mobile and tablet world. I only use Windows to game. Everything else can be done open source on a Linux or Ubuntu platform.

Same thing happened to a whole lot of us IBMers in the 90's. I just did slide in under the 15-year mark and scored a small pension. I don't hold anything against them. They took extremely good care of me and my family during my tenure.

Who needs a PhD to work at Microsoft? I had dev skills when I was 12 years old so they hired me out of a contract when they realized I could dev well back in 1999

Adam Resh That's exactly right. When Silicon Valley was booming it was booming with people who just got it. Now it's a different story. Major companies can hire kids out of college who are just as good as the 35-40 year olds but will only cost half the salary and work longer hours with out bitching. Everything that was considered "talent" back in the late 90's early 2000's is taught in school now. Not to mention technology has made it easy to weed out the redundancy of a lot of these jobs. I wish him the best but this is honestly a case of "it is what it is." The hard part won't be getting over his lost job but finding a job with decent benefits and financial security packages let alone one that will be the same.

I know many PhD works in Microsoft Research. I was MS employee before but in different country. I suggest you to keep forward, take your PhD, be well-known and then you may start your own or join to another big MS competitor like Google. Works for them until MS feels sorry has been laid you

Well, I was laid off in 2012 after 23 years of service at Wells Fargo Bank in San Francisco. After that, I searched for a new job for almost 3 years, but nobody was willing to hire me since I was already 62 years old pushing 63 and now 64. A fact of life, "don't get old". Most companies like Microsoft and Wells Fargo Bank do not care about people or family; thus, do not thank Microsoft, for you worked hard like me to deserve your salary, benefits and then severance package. Anyhow, I quit looking for a job as a Web developer, for nobody is looking for a 63 y/o person--they (MS or WFC) only care to hire new people to do the same work for less pay, and I have seen how "they" are outsourcing tech jobs to India or some other countries--thanks to the Internet--where they only have to pay just about 80% less than what "they" paid you for the same job. Outsourcing should be illegal, for we are not just losing manufacturing jobs to Mexico and China, but we are losing also technical jobs too. I don't like Trump, but I understand the angry feeling that America has and why people are voting for him. I don't plan to vote for Trump ever, but I understand why people are supporting him. "They (big corporations)" suck!

+orestesdd It's not, don't get old. It is, "don't work for someone else until you get old". It's a great growth challenge to become your own boss in life. A growth challenge I believe everyone should take on in life - like a right of passage. If you do this it does not matter if you grow old. The owner of this KZbin channel incidentally has increased his subscribers by 6x since decided to focus on it as a business instead of looking for another job.

I agree. i am in the Netherlands, i am going to 45 :( and after 2 years till nothing. The youn Indian with University degree are hired as programmers at banks and dutch telecom and public transport even.
