It all comes down to personal preference. There is no one size fits all device. I have this and the Pro 3 and love them both. Non of the gripes you have do.I agree with. For me the ergonomics are perfect. I love the device and using it on my lap is comfortable. But enjoyed the review. My review was opposite on the negative points.

tuberoako777 this would be a pretty awesome device. Ya. they need to include the infinite kickstand. I can't stress how much I dislike this 3 position one compared to the Surface Pro 3.

tuberoako777 You might find some people arguing that it'll need to be $699 mínimum to use Core M but if you factor in the keyboard the Surface 3 is more expensive than an equivalent T300 Chi which has Core M and SSD and almost $200 more expensive than an equivalent T100 Chi with Atom.

Windows 10 really helped this device. I just bought one for school 3 months ago. The only issue that I am having is that the USB port stopped working completely. I took it to Best Buy and geek squad told me that I have to send it in to get fixed. They also told me that I am not the only surface 3 customer to have this problem. Other than that, its great at what it does.

Shayna Pulley the full USB. I have geek squad protection too. They replaced it for free, I'm waiting for it to get shipped to the store. I agree that the micro USB port is really pathetic. They should have just put a USB type C if they wanted to save money. It's annoying because my mother accidentally stepped on the charger while it was plugged in and the charger was snatched out of the surface, it left a scratch on it. I'm glad I'm getting another one. Scratches really bother me.

It is all about mobility. It works as a tablet perfectly well with the advantage of having more than FIVE MILLIONS full programs available (not the apps that are limited in functionality, and more than 500,000 apps for Windows 8.1) and it happens to be perfectly usable as a laptop replacement both out in the field I could say but also at home using the docking station. It does not have a very powerful processor so long video editing and gaming will be slow on this device and yet still possible, believe it or not! Conclusion: it is for mobile people who also want to be productive from time to time. It is an average to good tablet and an average to good laptop replacement, taking into consideration the processor that is limited in its power to do demanding tasks for a long period of time. It is a better tablet than the iPad, sure not as thin but that is the very reason why it has a full USB 3.0 port for instance. It is indeed perfectly usable as a tablet and it does a much better job than the iPad because you have access to every single Windows program available. And you get Microsoft Office for free for one year! Therefore, I completely disagree with the reviewer on the video. Price-wise, it is very competitive even with the price of the iPad considering the storage provided on the iPad.

I paid $350 for the 2gb version with the keyboard last winter, at that price it's amazing (and still is). For $600 no way. Still, I have gotten a ton of use out of it! I can do some lightroom/photoshop work on it if needed and the battery lasts a long while. I love how light it is, you can't even feel it when carrying it around.

Sure this may not be the best device for the average consumer, but when looking at who is aimed for, its a great affordable machine. I think Microsoft is really aiming at selling this hybrid to the typical college student. Looking at this device as a through the perspective as a college student makes it quite nice and a great option to consider. It's a perfect note taking machine.

+Novashadow115 It's been really great. (Sorry this is so long but I hope it helps you!) It is definitely a laptop replacement! This week the keyboard is free with purchase of the Surface 3 at Best Buy and they will price match a lower Surface 3 price from other major retailers. Price match the pen at Best Buy with Target's online price. I saved $240 and put those savings towards the Geek Squad protection plan, a Fintie case off of eBay, and soon I'll add a glass screen protector from Amazon. Go with the 4GB/128GB model. Just do it. Because, personally, I've had some issues with it freezing- but I think that may be because I push the 4 GB RAM too much with what I do. I specifically use Chrome which easily and quickly restores all of my work and has even gotten me back into my midterm as if nothing has happened. I don't think I would have coped with any less. I'm worried about how flimsy the Micro USB charging port is- I wish they used a proprietary charger that was more sturdy. This is one reason I got the Geek Squad protection- because once that port dies the whole computer becomes useless. They also claim that they'll replace the cable/wall charger once. I have successfully gained a slow charge from a non-Microsoft USB cord and charger- specifically with the Lifeguard Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 5V=2A/9V=2A/12V=1.2 and my LG G4 OEM cable. If you like the Arc mouse for Surface you can find the old grey bluetooth Arc mouse for half as much on Amazon. It recognizes my portable external hard drives, is working great with Google Drive and OneDrive, has an incredible battery life of around 7 hours when you activate that Windows 10 Battery Saver mode. I'm personally surprised that I haven't pulled out my giant workhorse laptop in the 2 weeks since getting the Surface 3. As someone with a disability I have very much been enjoying taking notes by hand for the first time in years. Microsoft Edge has a great handwritten notetaking ability and I definitely use it despite still using Chrome for everything else. The Surface 3 is what netbooks were supposed to be with full Cloud integration and with apps/movies/music no longer being on disc anymore it's very easy to get everything from the Cloud. It is the ONLY tablet that can use Windows 10, all of Chrome as if it were a Chromebook/Chrome OS, play iTunes movies and music content, Google Play Content, Windows Store content, Amazon movies and music content, you can put Linux/Ubuntu on it if you wanted to, and more. The Surface 3 can really do it all and I'm selling my iPad because of it.

I bought it before this deal came out :( but I am still happy. They did not have the 4gb model in stock and I could not wait so I merely went with the 2gb option and it works fine. I do web development and android stuff and it seems to handle my needs fine. I really do not like chrome though. It eats the battery so I switched to edge and I like its dark theme and performance better. I have giant hands and the keyboard still feels really solid. I think they nailed the keyboard, if only they made the trackpad bigger but it is no big deal. I plan on using the 3 until I save up again for the pro 4 although I am not sure I want the bigger screen. I like the notebook like feel and the paper size when the device is closed. ALthough, the pro 4 willl be much better suited for my autocad work. All in all, a really pleasant device.

+Novashadow115 If you got it from Best Buy go back with your receipt ASAP and ask for that price match- hopefully your store is offering the keyboard free this week, too! They just took off the cost of the keyboard for me yesterday. They also took off the extra $10 off of the pen just from the receipt when I showed them Target's lower price. You also have until the 15th at Best Buy to return the 2GB model for a 4GB model if you really want it. The Pro 4 Keyboard is really awesome and feels perfect. I would never get the Pro model, though, simply because of size and weight of the machine. Hopefully the Surface 4, whenever it comes, will come with a similar keyboard as the Pro 4 and hopefully it will be backwards compatible with the Surface 3- because I would so go for it. Yeah, this is a really great device. I'm currently debating whether to get the Surface 3 dock or a more general PC dock to hook it up to monitors. The main selling point, for me, is how the Surface dock charges the device which seems less sketchy than using the cord. I feel like I'm going to accidentally rip the internals out if I pull the cord.

I had very bad experience with Microsoft surface pro 3 , exactly 26 days after warranty expiration, the laptop wouldn't work ,I called customer service many times, I done everything they said over the phone , nothing change and didn't work and they suggest me to pay them £450 to send me new one . The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is really TRASH and I advise to all peapole to not waste your money to buy Microsoft surface pro , I won't go for any Microsoft product again, and I'm very happy with my new Mac . Jeimy Walters as of now on Amazon the surface 3(128gb, 4gb RAM) with the type cover and a pen runs you about 600 usd. the surface pro 3 (i3 128 gb and 4gb ram) with the type cover is about 620 USD. I PERSONALLY WOULD take the pro 3 because of better processor performance and gaming, but it has a fan gets a little hot and a little worse battery life. the surface 3 is more compact and a little better battery life, but charge time is very slow and the type covers trackpad is very small.

Not surprised by your conclusion. People continually comment on MacRumors asking for an Apple version of this: An iPad that dual boots OS X and iOS - but this proves how unergonomic it is. If you need a tablet - get one. If you need a laptop, get one too. Don't be afraid of owning multiple devices, or even, not owning a tablet and letting a lightweight laptop do both jobs.

Hi dave, just stumble with your vid on surface 3 review (a year late). Excellent review. I have been using it for a year. There was a big issue with some Surface model (including my Surface 3) that the screen freezes and not responsive. I have tolerate with that issue for almost a year until I recently upgraded to Windows 10 (and whole other Windows update) then the problem is solved. But newer issue were raised on Surface 3 (and I believe other Surface models too) that the recent update to Windows 10 has caused both camera not functioning at all. Furthermore, there is an issue with lag and its noticeable when you are typing in Words and its even worst when you are surfing the net. I hope other Surface user in here can share their experience and solutions if any. Personally I think the Surface models are great. It behaves like a tablet but with the power of a Windows OS. I would love to recommend Surface to the consumers but only when Microsoft solved all the major issues highlighted by the Surface owners. Surface is still a great hybrid tablet-laptop device.

I can see Surface 3 being a good tool for students to take note in class or do some PDF annotating, but for that price sans keyboard as even surface pen it will be a tough sale. It will be a much better product if it at least comes with the surface pen. Some may argue that base model iPad cost the same as Surface 3 but I think there is really no point comparing a pure tablet with a hybrid. Surface 3 is meant to be use as a tablet AND a laptop, without the keyboard you can't really unleash its full potential. 2GB Ram is also not future proved for windows as well. 4GB Ram version + type cover + surface pen is around 800. At that price the new XPS13 or even UX305 is clearly the much better choice for students as they also provide much stronger horsepower without sacrificing much on portability.

Hey Dave Lee! I really liked your video. I just got a surface 3 about 4 days ago and I have up to two weeks to return it. I agree with all of the negative aspects that this tablet/laptop has. I think mine just came dysfunctional because this is the second time I am writing this comment. For me it just froze and closed all my tabs. Super disappointed so far but I really want to like it. I really like how portable it is and I HATE how long it takes to charge. This is the first time using the keyboard for a long comment and I do not like it the keys are to close to each other and I'm a fast typer and its annoying when you have to go back twice to edit your words. Just to weigh out my options what do you recommend for an ultrabook for the same price? Thanks so much and helpful and honest video thanks so much!

I'm wondering if the Surface 4 will include USB type C charging for more current, and up the basic model to include 4GB of RAM minimum. All in all, a pretty good device for what it's intended for, I'll be going for the Pro 3 or Pro 4 instead.

If you consider it as what came previously in the budget end of the Surface range, it's a massive improvement, Windows RT kinda sucked and at least this is a device that a light user that wants desktop grade applications within a very light touchscreen enabled package would possibly want. Microsoft are definitely improving the concept of the Surface with each edition, even if there are niggles.

I use almost 100% of the time Spotify, OneNote, Google Chrome with at least 3 tabs open and other light apps. Do you guys think a 2GB ram version is enough to me or should I buy a 4GB Ram instead? I had a 2GB computer and it was horrible, but I don´t if it was because of the processor or the ram memory itself. I love mine, but I wouldn't pay $630 for it. I paid just under $400 for the 4GB/128GB model with keyboard and pen. At that price, this thing is amazing. BTW, I even use it for CAD work. That quad core Atom x7 is surprisingly good, even at only 2W of power! It's too bad there isn't a S4 in the works, that's my biggest disappointment.

One of the few reviews that does not seem like a commercial for the product.I can tolerate most of the flaws, even the annoying charge times. The most annoying part of the Surface 3 is Microsoft Windows.I download patches daily in the foolish hopes that at least one bug will be fixed.

Windows 8.1 is perfect! IMO - I take it you haven't reviewed very many tablets t least not Window tablets! I was beta testing Win 8 before it was released on the desktop and used it with a Logitech K400 keyboard/pad and it has been nothing short of excellent! Real tired of the lame excuses that oh Win 8 for desktops/tablets/phone have no apps - well tell me something how many did Xp, VIsta or Win 7 have ? NONE! It's clear from your review your not a fan of the hardware which would reflect your opinion on the Pro 3 version as they are all but identical or the OS. So forgive iif i can't take your review serious when you already have established your not a fan of the OS right out the gate

Hey guys, if you need something like the surface 3 for browsing, and editing documents you should probably go with the jide remix ultra tablet. The tablet runs remix os, a custom version of android kitkat with lots of the windows functionality pc users love it's rocking a tegra 4 processor so it's able to handle everything you need from android, work and play wise. maybe that's what you think, but remix os, a custom version of android, can beat windows 8.1 in the way it can be used with the surface 3's processing power. It is much better for work, and about the same for play. The jide remix, the only device with remix os is a much bettr alternative than the surface 3

Excellent video, will definitely subscribe to your channel. As much as I like what the Surface 3 is, I appreciate your honesty in pointing out its short comings. The price of the complete package and the charging times leaves much to be desired. I think the type cover should have been included in the package, Asus for example have manage to have done that with it's Chi series by including a solid keyboard, but there are lots of compromises in those devices also, which I'm not happy with either. For starters, USB 3.1 would have solved the charging issue with the surface 3.

Nice review. What I am liking about this device is the full windows. Nice option to run lots of soft of you want to. Plus can get android stuff with bluestacks. However I'm hearing you about the OS as a tablet. Hopefully the free upgrade to Win 10 will make things better on that front. Hardware specs. Would have liked a bit more power under the hood. They shouldn't even be selling the 2GB ram model.... If you get the specs for the LTE version please post asap!

A mediocre tablet experience? Really? There are other reviews on youtube that state that no other mobile tablet can compare to the surface 3 spec wise. Please provide some competing models for the same price range, which you failed to do so in your review. Also you are pretty much saying that the keyboard is a must have accessory for Surface 3. What about for people who only plan to use it as a tablet and dont use word processing. For this type of user the type cover would be pointless and uthe onscreen keyboard would be more convinient. Am i the only person who will never buy a type cover. You are saying pony up the 130 but failed to realize there are a handfull of people who dont require the snap on keyboard for the tablet. The mediocre experience is being told to buy the type cover by your review.

I like how you describe features in your videos, but I need to pick at your review of this a little; you say it isn't worth the money because it's mediocre, and that mediocrity lies entirely in the ergonomics of the device. That's something someone like me can bear with - especially in this case where the Surface looks like a pretty cool machine anyway and performs to decent standards.
