X2 also has thunderbolt. With the USB-C Elitedock you have one connection to the X2 which charges the device as well as giving you various USB-A, USB-C, HDMI and Displayport connections. No faffing around with a separate power connection and video leads.

Couple of points. First, you can attach the pen to the magnet on the underside of the keyboard or to the bottom edge of the tablet if you are working without the keyboard. Second, the HP is much, much tougher than the Surface. Drop a feather on the Surface and shatter the screen? Hope you have a backup and can be without it for a week. Drop the HP? Nothing happens. Run it over with a truck? Buff out the scratch. Hit the screen with a hammer? Repair it on site under HP's self maintainer program and get reimbursed for the labor.

Seems slightly biased towards the surface to me... I've used both devices now. I originally had a Surface Pro 4 and I had to change it 3 times under warranty due to speakers emitting a high pitched noise that most younger people can hear which microsoft claimed didn't exist even though there are countless reports of it online. I quite liked the surface as well. In the video it says that there is no place for the HP tablet to attach the pen. The pen can attach magnetically to the underside of the keyboard. Also it comes with 2 tabs you can stick to the keyboard or the tablet to hold the pen. Also notied that the HP is far more responsive than the SP4 as well, especially with data transfer and file browsing due to it having a better, samsung, SSD inside. Also the SSD in the HP can be upgraded whenever you want. The pen also I found was much smoother and more responsive than the SP4 pen. Also the video states that the buttons on the pen work in onenote and dont have much use. The buttons are full reprogrammable to do near enough anything you want outside of one note as well. The Surface has much better speakers than the HP though, HP advertises as high quality speakers but they are actually terrible and cannot be heard in a loud room. Kickstand on my HP loosened very quickly as well to the point it couldn't support its own weight so had to be repaired. All in all though the HP is superior in my opinion and my work colleagues who have seen me with the surface and the HP all prefer the HP and think it has much better build quality. I went through 4 SP4s before I got a refund and bought the HP

One thing you could´ve mentioned is that while their CPU performance is not far off between the two models compared, the X2 is FANLESS, which means a completely silent device which is a pleasure to use at all times. The only fanless SP4 has an inferior CPU and HALF the ram. A major difference for those of us who hate having a helicopter inside our tablets... ;) A slightly less heavy device and a second full sized USB port could´ve made the HP an almost perfect machine, for me.

Hi, good point! The Core M CPU's are fanless on the HP Elite x2. Of course the trade off is more power on the SP4 or less noise/better battery life on the X2?

Good video but for me there's just no comparison. The Surface Pro 4 is higher quality, with a far more attractive and compact design. I'd like to point out that the Surface didn't borrow anything from the HP design-wise, as the Surface-esque design came way before any other manufacturer was doing anything similar. If anyone took anything from anyone, HP took design cues from Microsoft. Understandable, of course, as the Surfaces are amazing devices. Plus, there's the fact that the Surface Pro 4 has a better camera setup (including facial recognition), far better performance and more configuration options, drastically better display, more versatile kickstand. I would also like to point out two other things. One: the Surface Pro 4 DOES have a fingerprint sensor option, and that fingerprint sensors are also a part of Windows Hello. Windows Hello includes several methods of biometric authentication such as facial recognition, iris scanners, and fingerprint sensors.

The X2 does have configuration of going up to M7 processor which is way better than i5 from the SP4 at the same price here at my place. Definitely the SP4 has better display and lighter in weight. I am a tech start-up owner and I do some programming despite conventional business activities, X2 seems like my current choice for the next purchase as my MacBook Air 4GB i5 1.3GHz seems a bit slow after 3 years of usage.

+Dave Vo Correction the price point, the m7-6Y75 version of the HP elite x2 costs more than the SP4 with an i5 + type cover with the same ram and storage configurations. Secondly the performance you claim the M7 being "way better" than the i5 is exaggerated.

Koukichirou​ thanks for the comments. i must emphasize that the price point of m7-6Y75 in my region is cheaper than SP4 i5 w/o type cover. other region might be different. the m7 comparison was done pure from the perspective of power efficiency, i retract my word "way better". lol

I am torn between these exact two devices and im STILL TORN. I dont want to spend a load of extra money on the SP4 to get a keyboard and other accessories, but i dont want to settle for an inferior screen either. The serviceability of the elite is whats aiming me towards it. plus it comes withe the keyboard AND pen for less than all the same parts with the SP4. The specs are almost identical but im not heavy into PC gaming of editing so im not too worried there. Ive been reading the Elite is highly durable whereas the SP4 is not at all. Such a hard decision

I'm looking at purchasing an ex-lease HP Elite with i7-7600U, 16GB RAM, 256GB SSD (from a reputable Tech retailer) so I can finally return to finish my degree, & for the price they're asking it seems to be both an affordable & capable companion to my powerful home PCs!

Had to RMA my 1012 after only 11 weeks - the power button was wonky from the beginning, often requiring more than one press for the 1012 to turn on. Last week the keyboard died (touchpad still worked) together with a fatal Bios error (DXE Update on every reboot). Factory reset gave me a red screen after a "Biosrecutil stopped working" crash during the process and after that the device hard-locked. After turning it off it could no longer be turned on.

As a big fan of OneNote and having owned a Surface Pro 4 for over a year and also using a HP X2 1012 for a few months I can tell you that the pen on the Surface pro 4 is rubbish. It dampens any movement so when you're writing notes, especially if you have small writing, it just comes out as a spidery bunch of squiggles. it might stick to the side of the Surface, it might have a useful button on the top that does neat things but when it comes down to actually using it, which is what really matters, it's very poor and it's the reason I sold mine. The pen on the X2 1012 is much better. Your writing flows more and it picks up all of the peaks and troughs of every letter brilliantly. I'd love to try out a Surface Pro 5 (Surface Pro 2017 or whatever its called) to see if the pen issues have been addressed. With it's improved tracking and reduced lag it looks good on paper.

I wanted to replace the battery on my surface pro 4 since my the battery expanded and pressed on the display. As you mentioned surface has no screw. So you have to heat the display up and keep it warm during removal. On my case temperature dropped and adhesive was harded which causes a crack on the display. I am gonna never buy again surface.

Hi - thanks for the thorough reviews. Can you please let us know how often the issue with the elite x2 pen lag happened (what percentage of the time)? Also, I'm not sure I've gotten a clear answer: is the basic travel keyboard included or not included with the unit or must it be an additional purchase? Thanks

+bradyman16 The lag happened about 5% of the time so not a lot at all, just when I first opened apps such as Fresh Paint. Once I used it for a while it performed perfectly. The Elite x2 that we got didn't come with the keyboard, but you can find some that come with it depending on the model. Thanks for you comment, I hope this helped answer your questions!

Does either of them allow use of a keyboard while the screen is detached? I use my laptop for hours each day, and for the attached keyboard I have to sit with neck bent, hour after hour. I'd like to put the screen up onto a stand, and have it linked to a desk-top level keyboard, connected to the screen by a cable. I've seen this done, incidentally, in a news video but no idea which brand of laptop/tablet allow this.

Hi, the HP is built like a tank hence the additional weight but it uses the Core-M fanless CPUs compared to the Surface ones that need the fan cooling. There's also newcomers like the ASUS Transformer 3 Pro T303UA to consider too. Difficult choice!

+Hannah Jordan Hi there, as far as I'm aware the only real difference is that the HP Elite x2 is the business version with Windows 10 Pro, whereas the Spectre x2 is the home consumer version with Windows 10 home, and I believe the business version is more expensive. I hope this helps!

Ordered the HP version after sifting through loads of reviews Screen judder issues on the surface pro 4 kept showing up on many reviews Also the HP elite x2 looks far more robust for everyday use and serviceability looks to be more practicable too if anything goes wrong

The whole purpose of releasing the surface line was to get other companies to copy it and help them sell more windows machines. Microsoft wanted this.
