Thank you!! This hits home on several of the points I've been questioning about the surface vs other devices. Too many people hate on the Surface for not having the absolute best drawing application even though it is not meant to be used solely as a drawing tablet and thus is not up to par with brands like Wacom. Having said this, when I went to my local bestbuy and practiced on it for a while, I found the experience to be extremely enjoyable. It truly felt like I had a FANTASTIC drawing tablet to work with. I think your review places emphasis in all the right places!

Slim Pen 2 is better. It’s input is better than the first generation and it has a different tip design/architecture so tilt is much more natural on slim pen 2. All around the input is better, however I think that is in combination with the newer machines like Pro 8 and Pro 9. So if you have an older gen I’m not sure if you would see the difference. Although I still think you’d get more natural tilt with the newer tip.

Yes the tip can be pulled out, but it’s a totally different tip architecture vs the old so the old tips aren’t compatible.

Just don't like how I have to buy 3rd party apps just to change the buttons and to have hoover click but it's what we go so far. And no I'm not taking about launching apps with buttons. Going to take it through a quick design project this weekend using Photoshop, zbrush and 3dsmax on a surface go. Lets see how much of this can we inject into a real pipeline.

It works with Surface Go, but I have a few complaints about that compatibility. The charging tray is USB-A so it can't charge from the USB-C which is the only USB port on the Surface Go. So you need a dongle or a breakout hub to charge the pen, which you kind of need anyway. It's also too short to stick well to the side of the Surface Go. There's top and bottom magnets, and the Slim can't *quite* reach between them, so it can only connect to one of those, so it detaches too easily but sort of works.

There isn’t, at least not that I know of. I don’t think there was ever a way to charge it wirelessly. The charging dock needed to be plugged into a port in order for it to work.

How does the slim pen 2 work? When you connect it to your device, how do you turn it off and on quickly without wasting battery when not using it?

The pen doesn’t turn off or on, you just pick it up and it works and the battery can go for a good chunk of time before needing a charge, but the new slim pen 2 can only be charged in the newer surface type cover. They no longer sell a dock, so the slim pen 2 can only be charged with a newer surface type cover. This video was the first generation.

i spent some time in-store with the stock round pen. i found the springy feel really annoying for quick hatching lines. the lines were short and quick. it was hard to tell when the pen made contact and sometimes the lines would register late or not at all... looked pretty sloppy, using sketchbook pro. is there a tip for the round pen that doesnt have that springy feel? btw great video

Well, there is the pen tip kit which has a triangle tip variant in it that is similarly shaped to the tip of the slim pen, but they are a bit different in design and very different in feel. The one in the pen tip kit has a lot less tooth. Using that triangle tip in the kit will give you less spring action, but the trade off is a lot less grit/tooth when drawing. The slim pen doesn’t have any major spring action- another reason I liked it. You can also check out the Wacom bamboo ink dual protocol pen, or an Adonit ink pro- but neither of them have the same low latency that the stock pen or slim pen have.

It's def not a design that works for everyone. It works well for me because I float my hand when I work and switch from regular hold to the traditional style hold.

The Pencil has the better input technology for art- with much lower latency, and no jitter. But the Slim pen is my favorite for Surface. My Duo review will be up soon with the slim pen. For notes its great, for art with the Duo no softwares are fully setup for it so tilt doesn't work, just basic pen pressure works from the system level.

biggest letdown of the slim pen is it's high initial activation force.

Siddhartth I didn’t find it to have that high of an initial force. Very light strokes were registering with little issue for me. I felt the difference between the round pen, but more so because of the difference in tip hardness. I find the eraser to have really poor initial force and I barely ever use it because of that, but that’s also because it doesn’t have its own separate system wide curve.

@Siddhartth I don't currently own any Wacom stuff right now, but if grab something from them I will. However, I had the latest intuos Pro for a while. The pencil & wacoms stuff have the best/lowest initial force. I would say the 4K surface pen is a few notches away from them. However, setting the system pen pressure helps balance things out.

Curios. Cat It won’t go flying off with a few small bumps, but it won’t stick on and stay on in a bag. At least I don’t think. But, it can also stick pretty strong onto the bezel of the screen, and can attach a bit to the outside of the keyboard like I showed in the video. The round pen just has an extremely strong hold.

It should pair with the Surface hub app or in your Bluetooth settings. Plug in the dock and put the pen in it and it should pair. Charge the pen for a while.

Hard to say because it really comes down to personal preference. The round pen has a more recognizable feel for writing with the round barrel, but the slim pen has a harder more pencil like tip which I think hand writers would like.

Use software that's setup for the pen for the best experience, like Clip Studio Paint. Jitter is low level in something like Clip, and it's something that only happens on slow diagonal lines.

I never make it work (tilt specially) with the surface pro 7. Bluetooth said paired after connected almost immediately. The pen without clip says connected at all times.

Bluetooth pairing is only for the top eraser button, the pen itself needs no connection to function. Tilt only works in software's properly setup for the pen. If its not working at all there might be something wrong w/the pen.

The erasers are exactly the same feel on sceen. And yes the slim pen has a harder style tip, but it has a nice tooth. It's less of a rubber feel.

One thing I am really hoping for is how a long time ago when the tablet pc cane out and they cared about how it felt you had two options, you could choose the feeling as if you were writing on glass or you could choose as if you were writing on paper, you actually felt the texture! ! I think it had to do with the tip but also perhaps a screen cover. I'm not sure about that. I can't imagine they would build something awesome like this and not add this feature. Can you tell me if they added this function? Of course the amazing Wacom feeling where you can do shading and thicker lines when pressing harder is essential too but it seems they até going crazy losing functions!!! +sob*

I am not sure if the tablet/pen has this feature, however, I do know that there are screen protectors out there which can do the same thing. The screen protector I heard about is called “paper thin” and it’s supposed to add a bit of resistance so that when you write on it, it actually feels like you are writing on paper

Microsoft slim pen does not work with Surfsce pro7 and you will not find this on Microsoft's website and youtube are not a single thing about this. I have tested two different pens one from Amazon and one from Microsoft none of them did not work. They worked for a while and then sent a signal that made the touch function not work. Why am I writing this because a week ago I bought a Microsoft pen, the previous model that works with a battery. It works very well and it has not happened that the touch function does not work once. If you read the Microsoft product specification for slim pen you see that it says that pen works with Surface pro7 Which is not true in practice.

I have a surface pro 4 and dont like its pen too thick and heavy. Feels unatural to write with. Im a samsung note enthusiast and love their pens. I rarely use my surface pen cuz i have and like many spens and alternatives from samsung and 3rd parties. Im debating getting a galaxy notebook over the newest surface pro and surface book cuz of spen and having a phone, tablet and laptop that can all use 1 pen. Its annoying in class if im taking notes by hand with spen and need to write something on the sp4. $150 pen isnt cheap or reasonable. Wacom beats emr all day...
