I soooo miss this game. I got it right at release time, it was a fairly advanced game in 2001, but it really came to life with the Maple Leaf Tracks expansion packs. I'm not sure if they're still available anywhere but they made several Canadian add-on routes as well as an SP Cascade Crossing route, and a few Norfolk Southern, Santa Fe, and BNSF additional routes, IIRC. The newer routes all included additional locomotives and rolling stock that was far more detailed and prototypical than the Microsoft stuff. I believe Microsoft also released a BNSF SD40-2 as a "freeware" add-on a few years after the game was out.

0:30 it’s the old graphics. Many old games (especially some of the old Microsoft Simulators and Valve engine games) are really cozy feeling. I wonder if this game uses a modified version of Flight Simulator 2000/CFS2/FS2002’s engine.
@SMTMainline5 жыл бұрын
I agree, something feels very safe about them. And yes, I believe microsoft train simulator shared the same game engine as flight simulator - I know that MSTS 2 was suppose to use flight simulator X's engine.
@theobserver42145 жыл бұрын
SMT Mainline shame it was cancelled. Does MSTS/the current Train Simulators have Virtual Cockpit? I know that feature was supported in the engine since Flight Simulator 98, and properly usable since CFS1. By MSTS’s time CFS2 was out which featured very good VCs, and the game came out about 5 months before FS2002.

It’s funny that this game became more popular in its day due to all of those train crash videos that came out years ago.

It's true, they had the best crash physics and those video were great. watched them all the time as a kid.

good for the time, Sadly didn't age well, therre was a ton of mods and even boxed add-ons made for it and there's still a few if you know where to look. sadly most of the websites you could get those on are long gone. Compared to later versions of trainz and rail simulator it leaves a lot to be desired in the graphics and editiing department, I don't think I ever fully wrapped my head around the map editor. an when you go into freemode it's litterally just your consist on the entire railway with no other trains to interact with. While in trainz and rs you can just drag and drop whatever into the game world from a list, drive multiple trains, populate the railway with locos and rolling stock, and it's all fairly straightforward. You could probably do those things in msts but it would take a lot longer and your restricted to driving whatever train you started with.

That is really cool, I was always wondering how this came was. does this compare to the newer version? Where did you get the control panel? Also, can you do switching with this simulator? Thanks for the video
@SMTMainline6 жыл бұрын
This game is great, It's not near to as realistic as the newer ones however I feel that Microsoft did the best job at making it feel like your driving a heavy train, the modern ones have sound that is too light and the trains start and stop like they are light. And yes you can do switching. Lots of people have also been telling me it's free now as abandoned ware, I could send you a link but I haven't tested it myself so try at your own risk.

Specs shouldn't matter much since windows 10 has the ability to emulate XP when starting software. Resolution can cause problems, when I tried at 1080p it wouldn't start so mess around with your settings and see if it will start with a lower res.

I don't know who is saying that but I personally I have got the game to run on several modern computers running windows 10, you just need to make sure that compatibility is set to windows XP (In my case service back 3) and that your resolution isn't too high otherwise the game wont start
