Dracoti: From my understanding, these NOAA fisheries scientists work on commercial vessels (these fish were already going to be killed) to obtain data. Otolith age determination is a well-known method used by the scientific community to collect accurate data. Also, Rockfish are a slow going fish that can live up to 200 years, so it is likely that these analyses were correct. Like this video mentioned, this research is conducted to quantify appropriate "take limits" for fisheries conservation.
