Does the dead center on the head stock have enough pressure to turn the wood without any slippage? That something I’m concerned about before but this vs another cue lathe.
@playpool12fyao Жыл бұрын
The dead center works. Now I use one live center and one spring loaded dead center. Dead centers should not determine which lathe to get, customer service should be number one. Things break and get replacement parts and mods are more important and that is why I got a Mid American Cue Lathe. Thank you for commenting, don’t forget to subscribe and please share.

Hey man, your videos are awesome. Thank you so much I just ordered the same exact lathe from mid America.!! Please help me with this question : If I put a blank cue butt/shaft in the machine (a long wooden dowel) how can I use that machine to taper into a pool cue? For example, from 32mm down to 21 mm. And 21mm down to 12mm. How can I set up my machine to do that? Please help! Thank you!

Is this aluminum lathe better than the steel one? the tail seems to be wobbly on the bed and not sure how that stays in spec or in place as you do your work. For your metal mini-lathe there are lathe bed extensions you could have gotten. So what do you think as comparison? I too am looking for a lathe to break into my pool cue making and repair as a hobbyist and not sure the route to go. Any recommendations?
@playpool12fyao2 жыл бұрын
For the price and for what it can do, this is an awesome cue lathe. It’s a cue lathe not a metal lathe. But for accurate boring, any person that has a lathe from the China lathe to an industrial professional stand alone build in the US of A lathe, drill first then use a boring bar or a reamer to get precise dimensions. The tailstock is for holding my live center and to start a “drill hole”. Check out my videos on how I made my cue. I think I’m one of the very few on KZbin that is willing to shows on how to make a cue from cue blanks. I also mention that I purchase some of the blanks from another company and I give them credit for it. kzbin.info/aero/PLgwPCq9_WPivPiaBNcKL5ApA9Nk0TDkdl Thank you for commenting, please subscribe if haven’t already and please share.

Thanks! This helped a lot! Tapering my first butt on this setup tomorrow! Have you tapers a shaft on this yet?
@playpool12fyao3 жыл бұрын
The shafts I get are finished oversized. I just have to taper the joint end. I tried one where I had to taper the whole shaft, I think I could have done it if I had the power feed. With the power feed we just have to adjust the router to our taper. Thank you for commenting, please subscribe if haven’t already and please share. Also if you have any questions please ask and I will do my best to answer them.

@playpool12fyao Жыл бұрын
No special brand. I got it with the magnetic base to guarantee the arm can hold the dial indicator. Also make sure to get one that reads up to .001 accurate or even better .00001. The more zeros the better it is but it’s more expensive. Just in case, I ordered mine through Amazon Thank you for commenting, please subscribe if haven’t already and please share.

Does this lathe have a power feed side to side or do you have to manually move router side to side?
@playpool12fyao4 жыл бұрын
You can order a power feed for the lathe. For me, I’m not trying to make cues to make a living. Have to do it manually for one or two cues within 6 months does not justify for me to get a power slide. Thank you for commenting and please share.

I bought the same lathe couple weeks ago and have noticed quite a bit of vibration on the tailstock end after offsetting it for the taper. Were you having this problem and if so how did you solve it?
@playpool12fyao3 жыл бұрын
No, are you using a live center tool on the tailstock. If not that might be one of the problem. I use a dead center on the headstock and a live center on the tailstock and I place a just enough pressure to turn the wood and not stall when cutting with the router. Hope this helps and please share.
@leeallen79643 жыл бұрын
I customized my tail stock to be a screw style using a 3/8-24 rod and tapped sleeve to replace the ram style that comes with this lathe. Also replaced all the 10-32's with quick release handles. That eliminated the need for using an Allen key every 5 seconds. An easy way to align the head stock and tail stock is to mount a 1/2" test bar in the head stock and bring your tail stock into the test bar with the ram removed and just slide the tail stock onto the test bar that's already in the head stock.
@playpool12fyao3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for sharing your information. I like that 1/2” test bar. I need to do that when I need to realign my head stock to my tail stock. Thank you for commenting and please share.

I have the same lathe. I have runouts about 7 thousandths with a dead center from cue components. Any suggestions to truing them? Thanks in advance,
@playpool12fyao3 жыл бұрын
My headstock is around 2 thousandths. It’s not perfect but with the Edge it’s perfect. My other headstock was at 7-8 and the way i got it to about 2 is: 1 use a pencil to number the jaws. Number them one thought 4. 2 use the pencil to mark the wheel that holds the jaws also one to four. 3 now insert the dead center and make the dead center also 1-4 Everything should lineup. 4 check your run out and see where it is getting 7 thousandths Say it is at marking 3. Remember that. 5 now clock the dead center 90 degrees. One on the dead center should be at two on the jaws and wheel of the headstock. 6 check the run out Did the 7 thousandths follow the dead center, meaning the 7 thousandths is now reading on jaw 4 and wheel 4 on the head stock. If 7 thousandths followed then it’s a bad dead center. If 7 thousandths did now follow meaning the 7 thousandths run out is still at jaw 3 and wheel wheel then the head stock is of center. For a head stock that is off With a good dead center, where is the 7 thousandths you might be able to reposition the jaw to the wheel. All it needs is to move 3.5 thousandths down. Now recheck the run out. If the jaw does not move, same results go to the opposite jaw loosen and reposition. Recheck runout. It that does now work 1 loosen the two bolts securing the jaws numbered one and three to the wheel 2 now try installing jaw one to three and jaw three to one see if the run out got better or worse. 3 repeat rotating the jaws to the wheel to see what works. I had to rotate my jaw 1 to wheel 2 ( jaw 2 to wheel 1) and jaw 3 to wheel 4 (jaw 4 to wheel 3) and the best was 2 thousandths. Hope this helps and please share.

@@playpool12fyao thanks. I’ll report back once I play with it.
@PhiNguyen-mb7uu3 жыл бұрын
@@playpool12fyao ok. Seems like the dead center is fine since it did not follow as I rotate to each jaw. Moving the jaws around I did but didn’t improve much. I do notice the common denominator is jaw 4(facing me) which would always give me the most runout no matter where I relocate it. I’m thinking I should sand the opposite jaws from it (#2) to see if that helps.
@PhiNguyen-mb7uu3 жыл бұрын
@@playpool12fyao smh . Decided to to swap jaws with a rear stead rest to see if it helps, I loosen jaw 2 a little and the runout went down to 3 thousandth. Maybe I’m over tighten these soft jaws. I might loose the others a bit to see what happens. Would love to get it down more but 3 thousandth isn’t too bad.
@playpool12fyao3 жыл бұрын
That’s not bad 3 thousandths will work. If you want 0 run out, you have to use paper as shims. Hope this helps and please share.
