PLANS AVAILABLE: www.mollywollywoodworking.com...
Follow along on how I built his mid century modern lounge chair! This is a build that I have been wanting to do for a long time, I am so glad that I finally got around to, I couldn't be happier with the results. Plans for these chairs are hard to come by so I will leave as many dimensions as I can below to maybe help someone out who is interested in making their own.
Front Leg:
15 degree inward splay. Total length is 22" (should have made it larger). There is a taper from 2.75" at the top down to 1.25" at the bottom. The joint nearest the ground is cut at 90 degree from ground level, makes the glue up a lot easier. The bottom of this joint is 7.5" up from the ground, should have made this 10-11" instead to make the seat higher up off the ground. The top joint is cut at 3 degrees so that there is a downward angle for the arm rest.
Back Leg:
15 degree inward splay as well. Total height is 31". The piece above the top joint that is going back outward I should have made more upright, I can't remember exactly what the angle is, but it would have made the chair seat a little less of an angle. The bottom joint, again is cut at 90 from the ground, and 7.5" up from the ground. I should have made this more like 10-11" to give the chair a little more height.
Total Dimensions: 38" from leg to leg in depth. Seat depth is 21.5", seat width is 24". Back rest is 23.5" high and 24" wide. These dimensions seem really nice to sit on, and allows me to add 3" thick cushions without losing space.

Beautiful chair!!! Want to build 2 of these! Any chance you can share a shot of the finished chair with upholstery? That will seal the deal. Looking forward to downloading your plans. Certainly appreciate that you took the time to offer them.

I loved your design, and downloaded the plans. I used it to make 3 chairs.... learned alot with the first one (gave that away to the neighbor), and then made a few small changes and the later 2 turned out very similar to the picture. The only difference is that I changed up the arm rests a little, and used douglas fir finished with teak oil because I'm using these outside on my back patio. Just wanted to say thanks because there weren't many plans out there, and this design hit all the marks.

could you please share the lessons learned on your first attempt? I am far from a master and can’t afford a lot of excess learning mistakes in terms of materials.
@sidjacobi5984

@@jasonhuskie988 The biggest change was in the amount of distance that the joint nearest the ground extended from the leg. The grain was running vertically, and had very little strength (which I found out the hard way). I shortened this up and made the runner commensurately longer. The other big change as I mentioned above was in the arms. Rather than have arm runner connect to the front leg like in your design, I shortened the leg a little, and made a tenon on the top which mated to a mortise in the arm which I extended . I angled the front of the arm to be the same angle as the front leg. Also, I made the arm rest out of one piece of wood which I had flare out towards the back where someone's elbows would be, and then come in to the same width as the front leg as it swept forward. I did the cuts on my bandsaw and then chamfered the outside edge at 45 degrees where it flared out, and then sanded it for dear life.

Saw this chair on Reddit and followed your link. Love the chair. I've been thinking of trying this. The upholstery is the part I'm not sure how to handle. Pay someone to do it or learn more skills.

the length on the bottom stretcher? 32" seams too long? that brings my total length to 42" outside dimension of that bottom stringer...

beautiful chair. and you are absolutely right about lack of plans...i'm looking right now... I want to do this exact chair but have the back and the seat in an angle similar to Woodelight chair. do you have any recommendations for the angles I should use? Thanks, Izak.
@MollyWollyWoodworking
@MollyWollyWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
Izak Shoshana thanks so much!! I think the way he did it was have his seat and back at an angle of 95 degrees or so and then when he attached that structure to the sides he made it lean back more. If I were to do this project again, I would put that angle at 100 degrees.

So the assembly is only done with dominos. No joinery. Do you think there are limits to the weight, the chair can carry?
@MollyWollyWoodworking
@MollyWollyWoodworking Жыл бұрын
That’s correct. I’m not sure to be honest, I mean there has to be a limit on it eventually but i don’t know what that would be. I’m about 235lbs and it holds perfectly. My two kids will often jump up and down on it together playing and it has held fine as well.

Hello ! I really like your chair and i'm interested in buying your plans but the height of the sitting seems very low on the video (something like 12 inches) can you tell me if i'm wrong ?
@MollyWollyWoodworking
@MollyWollyWoodworking 3 жыл бұрын
It is a rather low chair in the video, but that is one of the things that I changed in the plans was the dimensions of the legs in order to sit a little higher off the ground. Building that chair I was just kind of “winging it” and that’s something I wanted to change
