Mid Hants Railway - Drivers Eye View - Ropley to Alresford

I think I rode on this trainline in 1966 as a tourist visiting from America. I thought the town name was Old Alresford though? Rode the line to Winchester and visited the cathedral there and saw King Arthur's round table! Lots of steam trains on the Winchester mainline! Lots of fun! I suppose it's all quite different today!

Hi, you've taught me something new today, I didn't know about the round table, so I looked it up - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Round_Table I'll have to go and see it now. Alresford is "Old Alresford", but today it is sign posted as simple Alresford. I never had reason to travel over the line before it closed, something I regret today. The LSWR line to Southampton, Bournemouth and the West Country was mostly steam worked to the end of steam on British Rail. Much of rural Hampshire hasn't changed much since you visited, just some new roads, Even Winchester itself is much as it was, just a few newer housing estates on the outskirts of the town.

Thanks, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I love steam, but I also enjoy riding behind the diesels. The Mid Hants Railway is a beautifully restored line with authentic stations and good visitor facilities.
